Moras Fischerdorf.jpg

Fishing Village in Winter Time
Walter Moras

When I look at this painting, I see a sleepy village in a beautiful landscape. When I look closer, I also see Moras’ excellent use of composition, line, color and light to build his painting. Moras was a German landscapist who specialized in realist winter scenes, although his work became more impressionistic in his later career. From what I’ve seen, his art is peaceful and quiet, focusing on nature and its beauty. People are rare in his works. When they do appear, their presence is small or inconsequential. I find this feature attractive; it lets me focus on the exquisite details of nature more and get lost in the setting and details.

There are two focal points in Fishing Village in Winter Time — the sun and perspective’s vanishing point. Located above and to the left of visual center, the sun draws my eye. It was the first thing I noticed. In a painting that has a dark, neutral color scheme, the bright gold radiates. But notice how the sun is not actually seen. A cloud covers it and produces these pretty sunrays. Instead, the cloud glows. It’s quite lovely. The gold light tints the whites and greys of the snow-covered landscape and provides a slight warmth — but only slight. The cloud cover keeps the light dimmed and the temperature low. It is still winter, after all. A bright yellow fireball in the center of the work would throw everything off here.

The vanishing point, the second focal point, is located on the horizon just left of the mast of the sailboat. I like how Moras placed the vanishing point so far left within the composition. To me, it shifts everything rightward. It creates interesting framing and dramatic lines and angles. The arrangement of the houses seems more scattered. For a quiet piece like this, it makes it more interesting to look at.

The horizon line divides the work into almost equal halves, but the lower half looks larger. I think this might be because it has more “stuff”. The sky is big. It has light and clouds, and a flock of birds in flight add energy. But the earth has a lot more: ice and snow, buildings and people, and a harbor with boats. As minimalized as human activity is here, there’s still things happening. Three males are preparing a boat in the foreground. A woman walks with a child in the left middle ground. Boats sail in the water on the extreme left. None of these are dramatic or dynamic, but they are still alive.

The large area of grey, black and white also outweighs the gold in the sky. The golden tint in the snow adds to it. Notice the small patch of reflected sunlight in the water next to the boat being prepared by the three men. It sparkles in the ripples. To me, while the sunlight in the sky is larger, it is also airy, transparent, and spread out. The light in the water is concentrated. It's one bright glow surrounded by solid, heavy greys. I think it makes the blacks and greys stand out more, weighing down the lower half.

By painting a winter scene, Moras uses few colors: black, white, and yellow. This creates some interesting challenges. Black and white provide contrast while grey fills in the details, but this can be drab and boring. The yellow adds warmth. In your mind, change this to a night scene. Notice how moonlight alters the mood and temperature. This work becomes all grey with a silvery highlight. It becomes colder and bleaker. I think the small dose of gold brightens the mood like it does the sky. It’s just enough. It changes a dreary landscape into something quite lovely.

21 On cold winter Sunday afternoons, Chalmette Battlefield used to look a little like this when my brother and I played there as kids. There was no snow or ice and very few people, but the same kind of lighting prevailed. And the feeling that the precious weekend with its free time from school was slipping away fast.

Or so says my memory of a scene decades in the past.

The Hun rolled through the village last week. Those that did not flee were slaughtered. The village is abandoned now, with its extant structures providing a siren song calling out to the displaced in the surrounding forests. They have finally ventured into that cursed place, and are preparing to resettle it.

They will be successful and will put their origin there behind them.

86 Very nice unusual idea for a painting. Much better than the besotted cardinal CBD inflicted on us yesterday. My grandfathers farm was oceanfront on the North Sea in Norway, on the southern tip, looking towards England. He raised 11 children by farming and fishing. They always salted cod for the winter, as the weather oft kept one from going out in a boat in the worst weather. RIP Kristian Hananger.

89 I can't add anything to Kris' usual excellent analysis. (And I tried.) Looking at other of his paintings there is a consistent and brilliant use of light no matter the time of day or night portrayed. He also tends to have at least some golden color involved that makes his paintings glow. It might be subtle, such as the glow of tree bark in sunlight, but it adds life to the scene.

As Kris pointed out, this painting and his others are such lovely pleasant scenes, It's relaxing just looking at them. In that they make me think of some of the Scandi-style paintings used in previous threads.

111 Kamala won't agree to a debate that occurs before Trump's sentencing in the NY Kangaroo Kourt Felonies case. That is because she knows the Klown Kar Kourt is going to send him to prison, and nobody has to debate a felon in prison. That is the Democrat game plan. She knows she would be beaten like a rented mule in a debate with Trump, so she has no intention of actually being involved in any such thing.

118 Rasmussen tracking poll 3 day average:

Trump 52%
Harris 42%

Rass thinks it may be an outlier and the margin is more likely Trump plus 3.

Posted by: Divide by Zero at August 21, 2024 07:22 AM (RKVpM)

Def an outlier. I'm worried that whatever Rass is doing with their polls, it's way overestimating Trump's support. I think Trump is leading, but 10 points is crazy. Rassmussen even knows it, since they say "we think the race is Trump +3 or so, despite what our modeling says."

Then again, candidates in past elections have had ten point spreads in August. Nixon in 68 was up big before Humphrey closed the gap. Kerry was up big in the summer of 04 before W stormed back. It happens.

Things always seem to tighten around mid-October. Only times they didn't in recent history were 72, 80, 84, and 88.

Either way, Trump isn't acting like he's 10 points up. If he was 10 points up, he's winning NJ, in which case he wouldn't be spending so much time in NC.

I think he's up, but not by a big enough spread where he can "run up the score" in very blue states.

Understanding art is easier than you think. It's been a part of the human experience since the beginning and its appreciation is instinctual. Explaining why you like/dislike something is where people become intimidated. There are building blocks in art that are pretty universal. Carroll Garden Club, Onward with seasonal landscape painters…

With many painters, their works may be known, but when it comes to biographies, information is quite scarce.

Walter Moras (1856-1925) was a German landscape painter, born in Cottbuss, Germany moving to Berlin at a young age. He was a student of painter Herman Eschke who encouraged him to travel about and paint scenes in Mecklenburg, the Island of Rugen, Norway, the Netherlands and Italy. Many of his paintings are from rural Brandenburg in the Spree Forest. Spree Forest is described as ” a unique landscape consisting of countless waterways that criss-cross the glacial valley now partially covered by forest and by meadows. The mystic and contemplative quality of this natural setting was the inspiration for many 19th century authors and painters who found beauty and solace among the trees and pathways of the forest.”¹

The interesting thing is if it's a three day average of about 1500 likely voters the newest 500 or so show a dramatic and sudden shift toward Trump. Even more then Trump +10 because of averaging. Tomorrow could be confirmation.

I like daily tracking polls. Like a thermometer that may give a wrong temperature (either on the high or low side) they do show when things are happening.

Not really. When the ice is six or more inches thick, and you aren't raising the temperature above 40 - 45 degrees, and it's not pointed at the floor you won't do much damage to the ice.
You aren't wanting it to get to 80 inside. Just enough to take the bite off of -12 with a 20 mph wind.

Wonder what that chart will look like in the critical swing States with DemCommie Secretaries of State and DemCommie Governors?
The Omega4 America guy(s) say that each of those Dem controlled swing States has 500k-1,5million phantom 'votes' to cast, as necessary, from dirty voter rolls full of gas station, Walmart, and cemetery 'voter' registrations, . One would hope Lara Trump and the RNC crowd have an idea of what to do about the 'voter' slush fund each of those Dem controlled States holds in their back pockets.. . Georgia voter integrity activists seem to be the most aggressive at trying to stifle the floating 'voter' roll crap game bien used by the SOS's. Would seem the RNC needs to get moving to stop the dirty 'votes' before they are cast

Holy shit.

I guess I'll never own a pickup truck. That isn't a vehicle, that's a down payment on a house. Unreal.

Though I *have* noticed that "cheap" truck configurations also don't seem to exist anymore. Standard cab, long bed, no major features. That truck doesn't seem to be manufactured anymore.

What I *really* want is a simple small truck like an S-10 or a Ranger. Standard cab, long bed, no cruise control, manual windows and locks, etc. A radio would be nice and I want A/C, but that's it. Manual windows and locks are probably a false economy nowadays, but the point remains.

That truck used to exist. I don't think it does anymore. Easy to hit $50k for a pickup truck when it's really a very nice and well-appointed, feature-rich family car with an exposed trunk.

I know a guy from high school that owns a car lot. He's a decent guy and sells decent stuff, and isn't trying to rip anyone off.

Every once in a while I look at his inventory online because, like so many places, there aren't prices on the vehicles. Five to ten year old unremarkable vehicles with 150K miles - vehicles I would not consider at all because of the mileage - are still over $30K. Many probably priced higher than they sold for new.

260 Def an outlier. I'm worried that whatever Rass is doing with their polls, it's way overestimating Trump's support. I think Trump is leading, but 10 points is crazy. Rassmussen even knows it, since they say "we think the race is Trump +3 or so, despite what our modeling says."

Rassmusen is the only poll that has remained constant in its methodology since day one. They have a Utube channel where they talk about what they are doing. Everyone else is lying hoping to discourage R voters and to allow for the Democrat cheating to look plausible when they pull ballots out of their ass in the count.

270 Bloomberg: Fed confronts up to a million US jobs vanishing in revision. There are a number of caveats in the preliminary figure, but a downward revision to employment of more than 501,000 would be the largest in 15 years and suggest the labor market has been cooling for longer -- and perhaps more so -- than originally thought. The final numbers are due early next year.

That is quite a headline, until you see that there was a net positive of around 15 million jobs in the Biden administration. So the revision would bring it down to 14 million.

Our side should remain positive and keep talking about all the good things from the Biden-Harris administration. In last night's convention they put up Trump's pre-COVID numbers against Biden's. Biden's were significantly better for manufacturing jobs, infrastructure, and more.

When this kind of news is backed by the likes of Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Wells Fargo & Co., and JPMorgan Chase & Co....all under the rock backers of Trump...I'm not inclined to believe them!

And it seems kind of convenient that after Trump suggested Powell not to lower the interest rates, this suddenly comes out!

SUVs of the different classes look almost identical because of government mandates. Heck, the Maserati looks like a Mazda. It has to. There's only so many ways you can make a shoebox meet federal laws.

So people moved to something that offers SOME individuality.

But that isn't why I want a truck. I want a truck to haul stuff around when I need it. Bare-bones is fine and in fact preferable. But I apparently am *not* part of a significant market. That sucks for me.

What I would really like to get is a Japanese or Korean micro-truck. That would be more or less ideal for me. But they aren't road-legal here unless they're very old, and so they're pretty rare and therefore miss the point entirely: they're not cheap.

In the mid-Eighties, the father of a friend of mine had a dark blue Ford F150 that was probably only a few years old then. Two doors, a cab for three people (or four if they knew each other well!), and a regular bed. it rode very well and had A/C. I'd love to run across a well-kept example of that.

356 But that isn't why I want a truck.

I wouldn't have wanted to try to use the rear seat behind me for *anyone* including a toddler, but as far as I was concerned, it was great.

That is, hands down, the *best* small car I have ever driven. A bit underpowered, of course, but excellent. Ergonomically spectacular, easy to drive, great visibility, overall good configuration, decent but not over-the-top feature set, etc. If I'd been in the market for a small car, I probably would have bought one after having that rental for a few days.

The alleged donors typically do not know anything about it. Most are unemployed, retired, etc. and have no way to actually have donated the sums that Act Blue says they did.

It is simply a conduit for foreign money to influence US elections. Obama pulled the same shit when he was running in 2012 by refusing to turn on the cc clearing house security features that exclude foreign held credit cards from donating.

Everything that the left does is to put normal people on defensive. The best way is simply to punch through their bullshit with truthful rhetoric.

Natives in the US by and large were neolithic savages--they fought against the US and lost repeatedly.

Nothing in their long revealed history indicates any sort of moral supremacy over those that defeated them and they fought each other for land and treasures just as much prior to the Euro settlers. And with just as much depravity in many cases.

436 Oh, say can you sing from the start to the end
What so proudly you stand for when orchestras play it?
When the whole congregation with voices that blend
Strike up the grand hymn and then torture and slay it?
How they bellow and shout when they're first starting out,
But the dawn's early light finds them floundering about.
Tis the Star-Spangled Banner they're trying to sing,
But they don't know the words to the precious old thing.
The rockets' red glare gives the bravest a scare,
And there's few left to face the bombs bursting in air.
Tis a thin line of heroes that manage to save
The land of the free and the home of the brave.
