Trump Conversation With Elon Musk Delayed by Massive DDoS Attack; European Minister Warns Musk That Europe Might Take Action Against X If He... Speaks with the Next President of the United States

Happy Tuesday. Does anyone else take until Tuesday to really start working again, or is it just me?

The long delay in the Trump/Musk chat was caused by hackers (possibly RUSSIAN?!)
launching a dedicated denial-of-service attack. That's where (I think) you make so many attempts to connect with a server you overwhelm it and keep it from connecting with anyone.

The highly anticipated live conversation between Elon Musk and Donald Trump, scheduled to air on X Monday evening, faced significant challenges both from technical issues and international pressures. Musk, who has endorsed Trump, reported a suspected DDOS attack that delayed the start of the interview. More than 20 minutes after the intended launch, Musk informed users on X that the platform was working to shut down the attack. He also suggested that the conversation might continue with a smaller audience, with the recording posted later.

However, technical issues weren't the only obstacle. Just hours before the event, European Union officials escalated their efforts to rein in the conversation, pressuring Musk to censor the live interview. Thierry Breton, the EU commissioner for the internal market, issued a stern warning that the event could violate the EU's new Digital Services Act (DSA), which targets harmful content online.

This intervention by the EU is seen by many as an unprecedented attempt to influence the U.S. presidential campaign, particularly as Trump's interview was expected to draw a massive audience less than 100 days before the election.

Election interference by Europe. For some reason, I don't think this is going to quite tickle the fancy of Jake Tapper as fake election interference by Russia did.

Critics argue that the EU's actions represent a significant overreach, attempting to apply European regulations to American political discourse. X Chief Executive Linda Yaccarino called it "an unprecedented attempt to stretch a law intended to apply in Europe to political activities in the U.S."

Musk's decision to go ahead with the interview, despite these pressures, underscores his commitment to free speech on the platform he acquired in 2022.

Musk reports that the conversation got one billion impressions. Not sure if that includes the connections made during the DDoS attack.

Former President Donald Trump's return to X, formerly known as Twitter, Monday night set an "all-time record," according to Elon Musk, with the interview and subsequent discussion generating 1 billion combined impressions. During the nearly two-and-a-half-hour interview with Musk, Trump described surviving July's assassination attempt as "a miracle," criticized Vice President Kamala Harris as "all talk" on border security, and questioned President Biden's mental acuity, stating he "might not even have an IQ at all."

Key Details:

The interview, initially scheduled for 8 p.m. Eastern Time, experienced a brief delay, which Elon Musk attributed to a "massive DDOS attack on X."

Trump gained just under a million new followers on X since before the interview began, with the event now reaching 1 billion combined impressions, a record for the platform.

In response to the record-breaking impressions, Trump posted on Truth Social, "An all-time record, but the media refuses to write about it because they are FAKE NEWS!"

Diving Deeper:

...

Reflecting on the assassination attempt he survived last month, Trump described the experience as "a miracle," stating, "For those people that don't believe in God, I think we all got to start thinking about that." He emphasized how the incident reinforced his faith and his belief in divine intervention. He also praised the Secret Service, particularly the counter-sniper who acted quickly to neutralize the threat, saying, "He took aim very quickly -- and they say it was approximately five seconds, from long range, one bullet."

The conversation then shifted to immigration, where Trump sharply criticized Vice President Kamala Harris. "Kamala was the border czar, now she's denying it," Trump stated, accusing her of being "all talk" without taking meaningful action to address the crisis at the southern border. He expressed frustration with the ongoing issues, noting, "She could close [the border] up right now."

Trump and Musk also touched on the state of American cities, with Musk sharing how friends of his mother had been attacked in New York. Trump linked this to broader issues of crime and immigration, expressing concern about the impact on cities like New York. "We're overwhelmed. You had to see the news tonight about New York, New York, and I love that place, and what they're doing to it is horrible," he remarked.

Trump didn't hold back when discussing President Biden's mental acuity either, questioning his capacity to lead the nation. "This president [has] a low IQ, very low IQ. He had a low IQ 30 years ago, by the way, but now he might not even have an IQ at all," Trump remarked, emphasizing his concerns about Biden's ability to handle the complexities of the presidency. He used this critique to further contrast his own leadership with what he perceives as Biden's inadequacies, particularly in the realm of international relations and decision-making.

...

As the interview concluded, Trump announced his plans to return to Butler, Pennsylvania, for a rally in October, just before the November election. "We're going back to Butler, and we're going to go back in October," he said, adding that his first line in Butler would be, "As I was saying..."

That's funny.

87 Where’s the polls post we were promised last week? I hope it wasn’t cancelled by Kamala taking the lead..

Face it: Trump screwed the pooch yet again. In 2020 he didn’t do nearly enough to counter the mail-in ballots and “new normal” voting rules that everyone who was paying attention said would allow the Dems to cheat.

He had a golden opportunity this year, as Biden was polling so badly the cheat would have been too hard to pull off. So Trump agrees to an unprecedented early debate—which commentators said was suspicious and possibly a ploy to boot Biden. And now they’ve got enough breathing room in the polls to ballot stuff PA, AZ and GA.

Great job, GOP.

Fascism is the dominant political-economic system across the world. To some degree - some more than others - it's the basic operating premise for most governments everywhere.

Is the US not essentially a fascist system now? Industry and State and Party as one big complex that ices out opponents and operates without significant limit? Sound familiar?

We're a fascist country. Canada is a fascist country. Red China is a fascist country (hybridized in the other direction from us, but nonetheless). Korea and Japan are fascist countries. Most of Europe is comprised of fascist countries. "Democracy" and "representation" are largely window-dressing in most of them, where they exist at all. Actual extra-Party/extra-State accountability essentially doesn't exist, and they operate with impunity.

Fascism isn't coming to Europe or here. It's already arrived, they just keep up appearances.

About a decade ago, maybe a bit longer, I read a lengthy article about the "internet of things" and the massive security vulnerabilities in most of them. It included a gem I have never forgotten:

"Our only hope is that the internet of (incompatible) things collapses under its own weight before the internet of (insecure) things gets us all killed."

Well, engineers being what they are, they've largely solved most of the compatibility problems. Security is still a nightmare, though.

149 I was curious about the timeline of some things, so I did a quick look.

The leaked internal Democrat poll that showed NM competitive and Trump walking away with the presidency was leaked on July 3.

The debate happened on June 27.

That's six days in between without any information about when the poll was conducted, so I suspect it might have actually preceded the debate.

So, before the debate, when "everyone" thought that Biden was sharp as a tack and that Biden was just a bit behind Trump, internal Democrat polling was saying that Trump was walloping their candidate.

But the public polling said it was different, that it was close.

That law can only be changed if the Pennsylvania legislature sends a bill to the Governor’s desk to do it.

Pennsylvania Democrats refuse to change the law that prohibits counting mail-in ballots until election day

The level of Trump's support.

So this surge, however it is created, is not Trump voters switching, it's Dem leaners coming home.
But, we always knew they were going to vote D on Election Day.
This election was always going to be won on:

It depends on the tools. A good DDoS attack is difficult to differentiate from normal traffic, and a well-planned scheme will be doubly hard because you stick your botnet on establishing contact prior to the attack (there's a history, and therefore it can look "normal" for longer). DDoS depends on being difficult to differentiate at first, then a sudden strike to bring the system offline and sending the operators of the system on side quests to find and knock out the malicious connections. Good tools make it easier to spot the subtleties.

I'd bet X has pretty good tools.

Kamala is a very, very average intelligence person. And, there's nothing wrong with someone who is of average intelligence.
But I would like to have people in government be well above average, and understand difficult ideas and problems.
Kamala can't think her way out of a lot of situations, and she struggles for words, giggles, etc., because she can't come right out and say what it is she really wants to do.
This election is no sure thing, because the Democrats can cheat enough in the swing states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Georgia and Arizona.
Democrats control the statehouse and state AG in 4 of those five states, and will cheat to win. They have done it before.
What will we do if that happens? Allow mediocre midwit Kamala to be President (And whoever is actually behind her?)?????

SMERSH. This is actually an acronym for a Soviet Organization.
Joseph Stalin coined the name "СМЕРШ" (SMERSH) as a portmanteau of the Russian-language phrase Смерть шпиoнам (Smert’ shpiónam, "Death to spies"). Originally focused on combating German spies infiltrating the Soviet military, the organization quickly expanded its mandate: to find and eliminate any subversive elements—hence Stalin's inclusive name for it

Exactly.

GA is in no way, shape or form a "swing state" - it is solid R. The problem there is that the Republicans in charge there are all-in on election fraud. To claim that those same guys are doing ANYTHING for election integrity, when their track record is to vehemently stand in the way of it, seems naive, to put it mildly.

299 Eh, what we have ain't communism. The fascists all happen to largely agree with each other and see mutual benefit in pursuing common goals transnationally. That is coming to an end as we speak. The globalism will fracture. The fascism, however, is likely here to stay.
Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at August 13, 2024 12:24 PM (HnUIn)
+++++

Politely disagree. Fascism and communism always end up resembling one another. The primary differences:

Fascism classic:
- traditional values (somewhat)
- worships strength
- supremacy of majority race/ethnicity
- master morality

“Red fascism”:
- subversive values
- worships weakness
- supremacy of minorities and other “oppressed” groups
- slave morality

America is a communist country, which is why it is undergoing collapse. I think many younger right-wing people grasp this, but Boomers can’t seem to see that the America of their youth is long dead. The real American flag is now the rainbow flag. You need government permission to use your own property. Government agents actively conspire with massive tech companies to silence dissent, etc.

They're directly related. Fascism came out of Marxism. The disaffected Marxists realized that Marx was wrong after the Great War. If anything was going to cause the revolution of the proletariat, it was that conflict. But whoops, Marx had it wrong. G-d and Country were *much* more powerful identity components than class, especially if class is even remotely mobile.

They invented Fascism. Nationalist socialism, with the socialist side of it a bit softer. The fascists were *much* smarter than the communists, and realized direct ownership and operation of the economy was too damn hard and pointless. Better to leave it private and just ensure that the operators are down with the program. "Working Toward the Fuhrer." If you aren't down, you'll sitll be expropriated and nationalized, but they'd rather not do that. Too big a pain in the ass.

It's *all* red. Whether it's "traditional" or "subversive" in its patina depends on who's running it, but the systems are all similar and come from the same root.

377 I keep going back to those leaked internal Democrat polls that came out on 7/3.

They showed the race as completely lost, but the only text released with it was an implication that it was done after the debate. They didn't say what days the interviews were actually done.

Six days is enough time to do a big poll with real money, but it'd mean that Democrats would then decide to immediately leak it...immediately.

So, without the described dates, it tells me that the poll was from before the debate, but public polling disagreed, calling it within the margin of error, advantage Trump. That was the time when Biden was sharp as a tack and it was just a fundamentals game.

Posted by: Lacra at August 13, 2024 12:45 PM (4pwAx)

I don't know how anybody can say such things and expect to be taken seriously.

For a start, Kamala will EVENTUALLY have to speak to America, at which time even Dems will be asking "You can't be serious, with this candidate." The only job she was given was the border, and she originally denied it even BEING her job.

Didn't everybody learn in 2016 how fake polls and the Fake News are? How could anybody MISS that?

The irony is that she really WASN'T the "Border Czar". It was the job Biden assigned to her, but SHE CHOSE NOT TO DO IT. Despite popular opinion, the VPOTUS does NOT work for the POTUS - they are elected, not appointed. If VPOTUS doesn't want to do what POTUS asks, they don't have to do it if they don't want to. Her record is spotless - she sucessfully DID NOTHING.

The debate was a pretext, not the reason. Joe was never ever going to be the candidate this year and Kamala was always going to be the replacement.

I thought it was getting late to replace him but apparently they planned to wait until the RNC was over to do it. Bread and circus aside, that's what they did.

Trump seems very interested in polling, he constantly talks about it. At least he was, now he's not.

Biden was forced out of this race over bad polling, so there's clearly some level of accuracy about the race.
