More Stolen Valor Garbage: Walz Began His Political Career With Blatant Lie About Having Fought in the War on Terrorism; Atlantic Reporter Won't Say If Walz Lied to Him About Being a Combat Veteran, or If He Just Made It Up to Help Out the Team

Walz has been lying about being a combat veteran longer than he's been a shitheel leftwing politician.

Walz launched his first congressional campaign as 'a veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom'
Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz has described himself as "a veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom," the official name of the U.S. government's war in Afghanistan following the Sept. 11 attacks.
But Walz never deployed to the Middle East. And, when an Iraq war veteran confronted Walz's aides with evidence of what he called "stolen valor," his aides didn't do much to address his concerns.
As a first-time congressional candidate in 2006, Walz's campaign announcement described him as "a veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom," an archived version of the press release shows. Two years earlier, in 2004, Walz organized a protest against then-President George W. Bush in Mankato, Minn. A photo of the rally shows Walz carrying a sign reading "Enduring Freedom Veterans for Kerry."
Such a title historically applies to someone who served on the ground in Afghanistan during the Global War on Terrorism. Walz, a 24-year veteran of the Army National Guard, spent time in Norway in support of NATO forces and in Italy working in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He had never seen combat, he told Minnesota Public Radio in 2018.
Walz's claims spurred Iraq war veteran David Thul, a sergeant in the Minnesota National Guard, to approach Walz's aides at the Democrat's Mankato office in 2009. Thul filmed the encounter, in which a staffer told Thul she was "not aware" of Walz serving in Afghanistan. Thul went on to present the 2004 photo of Walz, as well as Walz's website, to another aide, who acknowledged that constituents could get the false impression that Walz served in Afghanistan.
"Operation Enduring Freedom is limited to Afghanistan and the airspace directly above," Thul told the aide. "Congressman Walz is clearly claiming ... to be an Enduring Freedom veteran. Nobody disputes the fact that he is not an Afghanistan or Enduring Freedom veteran. So this represents a fairly serious issue." Asked whether he understood how constituents could falsely "assume that means [Walz] served in Afghanistan," the aide responded, "Perhaps, I guess."
The aide did not dispute that Walz was pictured in the 2004 photograph, and, indeed, a 2006 Atlantic article describes the spectacle of the future governor protesting the Bush visit with a group of high school students. The aide told Thul he would follow up with him. A source familiar with the situation said neither Walz nor his staffers followed through with that pledge.
Walz, who has called himself a "citizen soldier," has been accused before of embellishing his military service. Two Minnesota National Guardsmen said in 2022 that Walz falsely claimed he reached the rank of command sergeant major. But Walz did not fulfill the duties required to maintain that rank before he quit the service in 2005.
And Walz, in a video posted this week by the Harris campaign, called for a ban on the kind of guns "that I carried in war," the Washington Free Beacon reported.

The Tim Walz Stolen Valor story goes back to the very beginning of his political career. From the onset of his foray into national politics, Walz sold himself to the public and the media as a combat veteran of the Global War on Terror, masking the reality that he quit the military to run for office and avoid being deployed to Iraq.

Just months after leaving his battalion to go to Iraq without him, he announced a run for Congress, and the dissembling about his serivce record began immediately.
Instead of being honest about his early departure from the military, Walz told the media a much more heroic tale, one that was entirely ficticious.
Bloomberg's Joshua Green, then employed at The Atlantic, was the first major reporter to profile Walz. In a piece discussing the then-congressional candidate, Green writes that in 2004, Walz left his hometown in Minnesota "to serve overseas in Operation Enduring Freedom."
It's unclear if this is Green, a veteran reporter, omitting major facts, or if Walz is selling Green on a particular narrative. Nonetheless, the assertion is incredibly misleading, as it leaves the reader under the impression that Walz served as boots on the ground in the Global War on Terror, when in reality, he merely deployed to Italy in 2003 for a six month stint.
It gets much worse.

Yes, that first claim is misleading though not factually false: He did serve "overseas" -- in Italy -- in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

But here's where Walz completely removes the fig-leaf from the lie:

Green discusses a 2004 visit from former President George W. Bush to Gov. Walz's hometown, in which a protesting Walz (who was still serving in the military) supposedly demanded to speak to the then commander in chief.
"Walz thought for a moment and asked the Bush staffers if they really wanted to arrest a command sergeant major who'd just returned from fighting the war on terrorism," Green writes.

While the first instance can be written off as an issue of unclear reportage, the second example cannot be explained away. Walz was not just serving in a support role for the war effort (from Italy), he had been "fighting the war on terrorism."
According to the article, Walz was picked out of relative obscurity by Democrat operatives due to his military service. These operatives went out and recruited "veterans from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq," Green writes.
To this day, Green remains under the false impression that Walz served and fought in the war. In a piece for Bloomberg on Tuesday, he wrote that Walz served "in Iraq as part of Operation Enduring Freedom."
In marketing Walz as a veteran upstart politician, he created a false construct that involved heroism in the war in terror, when in reality, Tim Walz never fought in a war or anywhere near a war.

Green has not yet reported whether he made this claim up himself to boost Democrat candidates or if Walz lied to him.

You know that these motherfuckers are liars because they never, and I mean never, take Democrats to task for lying to them.

Because they're on board with the lies themselves. Green doesn't view Walz as having deceived him; he views Walz as pushing an effective, useful lie on the public. And he's not embarrassed to have been hoodwinked or mis-used; he's proud to have done his part to advance propaganda helpful to The Great Patriotic Soviet Cause.

89 Most people I know, like me, who served and left service, are careful not to overstate. I am very proud of my service on the East-West German border when the wall came down. We then deployed to Kuwait in May/June 1991 to relieve the guys who had fought the war and as a show of force/patrol group. My dad would proudly say I was a Desert Storm veteran and I would sheepishly say "not really--technically it was still Desert Storm but there was no combat. It was over" Was there some danger? not really more than any military unit. Did I take the combat pay and the tax break for being in a combat zone? yes.
But I have always made clear it was not during the war. I say I served in Germany and Kuwait--not in Desert Storm.
I knew a guy who ran for local office and said "I was deployed during Desert Storm." Technically true, but he was deployed to Fort Stewart, GA, not Iraq, so that was a scumbag move because he was implying service in the zone. That's what Walz has done, and he has clearly made it a practice and the crowds eat it up.
It's disgusting.

I don't. Biden was noticeably losing blacks, women, and young people. I think he was actually being artificially held up and was much lower in reality.

It's separate, funded by the state it's in, but my brother deployed twice with his Montana Guard unit to Iraq and they received numerous unit citations. Brother said they were more squared away at the time than the 101st Airborne. Other Guard units are less combat ready.

(He was also there in 2003 with the 82nd Airborne.)

Between 2003 and 2009, there were many NG units deployed to Iraq.

The "One weekend a month my ass" meme was quite popular with these units in the sandbox.

Though we regular Army troops enjoyed ragging on them regarding this, when it came time to going outside the wire, they were subjected to IEDs just as much as we were.

But they still are part of the pointy end of the spear. A friend was one of the first across the berm for Iraq Pt 2 as a combat engineer. They were Guard.

We had a Brigade of Artillery make it to VII Corps before the ground war started. All but one battery (which was totally on its ass) were outstanding troops and canon-cockers. Fun to be with too.
The interesting thing about them that I saw was there is a lot of "family" in a unit. The Battalion Commander is Bob. the CSM is his cousin Bill. Two of the Battery Commanders are sons, etc. And you don't let family down. Hence, they make take a few shortcuts, but they get the job done.

IMHO at this instant it is likely NASA Administrator is going to exercise his authority and order the crew to stay onboard the ISS and Starliner will do an automated entry, and hopefully intact landing. Even if all the NASA and Boeing engineers say it is safe for crew entry/landing. (Which appears to not be the case at this instant.)

The bad news for the Starliner Two: They may not get a ride home until February. A 'rescue' Dragon that launches in the near future with two empty seats will of course carry only 2, not the planned 4, astronauts up for their six-month tour. NASA will not want to pay for another Dragon mission that only goes up to quickly return the Starliner Two. The two kicked-off the upcoming Dragon to make room for the two Starliner crew members will get up to ISS ?? months later.

378 We left a Division's worth of equipment in Kuwait after DS. 7th or 5th Army stuff from Germany, I forget which. They were downsizing in Germany and it way cheaper to leave it prepositioned than to ship it back to Europe then back to the states.
The 24th Inf Div rotated a Brigade over there every 2 months to, as we called it "Take it and break it". We did 2 weeks on each Brigade worth of Hardware.
My unit wound up there for 4 months fine tuning the Magellan Sat. system. Way secret at the time. Green screen technology.
As I said earlier in the morning report there were standing orders for Combat Patches and pay/no income witholding for being there when I went in 93.

We'll see if it happens, but even if it does, I think it's foolish to expect 2008 levels of GOP turnout, not to mention 2008 levels of Independent support for the Democrat candidate.

I think picking Walz was all about motivating the base, which generates fervor, which translates to weighted polling, which gives the appearance of momentum.

In reality, Kamala has got around 38% of the electorate really really excited. Good job lady. Trump has around 38% of the electorate really excited too. The last quarter of the electorate are the swing voters and they don't get excited by hype. They vote based on their wallet, on fatigue with the party in power, and on common sense issues that directly affect them.

Trump has the advantage.

Very few of us here are real Republican partisans. I'd say most find the Republican Party to be a deeply imperfect vessel for political efforts, but it's the best in town, as sad as that is.

It'll be interesting to see how far we've come in terms of breaking ourselves from that sort of base partisanship in 2028 when, say, George P. Bush wins the GOP nomination off the back of his great corporate tax policy.

Still, many, many GOP partisans out there who will just vote GOP no matter what.

My cousin was in the NG and was deployed multiple times in 20 years, including to Kazakhstan. He's fortunate in that he was a police officer for several of those deployments, so his job wasn't at risk.

But in the days leading up to Biden's quitting the race, it was leaking everywhere that their internals were showing him hemoraging voters across the country, with New Mexico and New Jersey becoming tossups and previously-intended swing states like Georgia and North Carolina becoming solidly red.

There is zero chance that a high-ranking leader like Walz did not know his unit was going to be mobilized and deployed. The states all lobbied to have their units called up, in part because they got plussed up with new equipment and they went on the federal payroll, freeing state budget dollars for other purposes. The deployment schedule was known far in advance of the unit getting a warning order, because the Army and the state coordinated it.
