The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

Our current foreign policy is a clown-show, and it is a direct result of the influence of the Obama minions who seem to be running most of our government. There is no coherent plan, no overarching goal...it is simply a cascade of short-term decisions based on a chaotic mix of post-modern victim politics, the needs of their domestic political allies, and an underlying sense that whatever America does is fundamentally flawed.

America as the world's policeman is untenable, and has cost us untold trillions of our treasure, untold thousands of our young men, and perhaps the soul of the nation as the grift and graft became the real reason for military adventures across the world.

But there are some that make sense, and maintaining a presence where significant Islamist organizations are based makes a certain amount of sense. And yes, those situations are ripe for abuse, and a ready-made flashpoint for a war of convenience for political needs. But choosing our battles is important, and Niger seems to be a good place...except that we ceded the space to the Russians!

Biden-Harris Regime Throws in the Towel in Niger, Abandons Military Base.

Following a military coup in July of 2023, a pro-Russian military junta took over Niger, ousting the Western-backed president. The National Pulse reported that neighboring nations and the Biden-Harris government in the U.S. initially threatened to intervene and restore the country's former leader. However, by April of this year, Russian forces had begun to move in, with Biden conceding to the junta and announcing a withdrawal of U.S. troops.

One wonders whether we left equipment as well as a modern airbase? Echos of Afghanistan anyone?

But why are we confronting Russia on its border with Ukraine while simultaneously running away in a strategically important area thousands of miles from Russia? Because we do not have a geopolitical philosophy that guides our actions, so these decisions are based on an insane, short-term set of decisions that when seen over a period of years make no sense...unless the ultimate goal is the degradation of American power.

How else to explain our cozying up to Iran, while Iranian proxies do their damnedest to kill Americans and our allies?

An attack on American military personnel should be treated as an attack on America. The response should be overwhelming, and the supporters of those who attacked us should be treated like enemies. But we treat Iran as if they are completely separate from their foreign policy, which is simple and direct: kill Americans and Israelis whenever and wherever they can.

Western analysis of the assassination of Haniyeh by Israel suggests that Iran will attack Israel in the short term, probably with a combination of ballistic missiles, drones, and cruise missiles. An appropriate response would be strategic bombing of Iranian missile bases by the United States, Israel and perhaps other Western countries before they launch. After all, Iran is the ultimate antagonist in the Middle East, controlling Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, and a host of other groups whose only function seems to be the disruption of the West. That is evidence enough that Iran is the problem, and playing a proportionate response game simply emboldens them. And wasting expensive anti-missile systems while exposing how they work, when there is a better and more effective response available is an example of the lack of a coherent geopolitical philosophy.

True, but we need to appreciate the unusual times we're in.

Kamala is a VP running after only a single term, and not in the way Mondale did (who ran after his term had ended). She's running as an incumbent VP after only a single term. Usually an incumbent VP runs after two terms and that means asking the electorate to give the party in power a third term in the white house. That's often a big ask for a country that often gets bored and likes change for the sake of it.

Next election, assuming Trump wins in 24, Vance will be running after being VP for only a single term. We'll be coming off the first time we've had a non-consecutive two-term Prez in 150 years.

There's not really a precedent here from which we could theorize.

Authoritarian governments need an enemy. The Ukrainians used the Russian speakers in the lost areas of Ukraine in 2014 as that unifying enemy. Putin turned it right back and used Ukraine as a unifying enemy as enemies of ethnic Russians. Repeat of Georgia in the 00's.

NATO then used the Russians as an example of why they are still relevant, and so on. Dems and GOP used muh Ukraine and Russia Russia for domestic purposes to get Trump and to rake off US money spent there.

Everyone in power gets their beak wet.

For ordinary people, the result is a pile of dead, cold and dark Euroland, and massive economic losses in the future including Russia.

Massive wars are ultimately destructive in many ways not apparent to the war gang and the bean counters. WWI arguably killed Western Civilization and WWII came close to finishing its destruction especially in Euroland.

When Prager gets his happy well fed butt into a line unit of the military at the pointy end of the spear, then I might listen to him. But calling for other faceless people to die so he (and others) can pose as deep strategic thinkers is evil.

A lot of our problems come from how our ruling class is insulated from whatever problems they create. Elite do not serve in the US military except when it is politically advantageous to serve in the rear echelons. CEO's fates are separate than the poor line workers in those companies they despoil. Investors only care about their money from such companies and don't really care how the sausage is made to get it. Gubmints create separate privileged classes via legislation and policy that create two tiered justice systems and so on.

We may scoff at the old days but elites back then were expected to be at the spear point. Those that survived then at least earned the right to be listened to. They had to put their own personal money at risk to support economies, etc.

I agree. We need a stronger Navy and Air Force than a massive Army to fight for the Euroland, Koreans, etc.

But, I think the conventional large carrier is going to be done in by missiles and drones. Then you have the large entourage around a carrier simply to protect them. Lot of resources spent there in personnel and equipment.

Smaller stealthier craft that can launch countless sorties of drones or are guided missile launching pad along with submarines are probably the future of naval warfare.

#2 today I saw a muscular and well tanned fellow riding a motorcycle. He was wearing bib overalls and work boots but no shirt. The bib alls were cut off just above the knee. He also wasn't wearing any kind of helmet. Just a balaclava and what looked like skiers goggles.

#1 a few months ago, I saw a geezer, wearing bib overalls and a t-shirt, riding a bicycle down the side walk.

#2 today I saw a muscular and well tanned fellow riding a motorcycle. He was wearing bib overalls and work boots but no shirt. The bib alls were cut off just above the knee. He also wasn't wearing any kind of helmet. Just a balaclava and what looked like skiers goggles.

I've noted here before that during 2020 they mailed over 100,000 ballots to all the students of the three largest universities here in AZ (many of whom are not state residents) -- and that was more than enough to steal the elections from Trump, Lake, and company.

In fairness, I'm anti-immigrant. They don't help and we don't need them. We fought and won a two front world war with a population under 135M.

No immigration at all for the next 25 years would suit me. If there is some particular person we need, a Nobel Prize Physicist etc, let Congress grant them citizenship on an individual basis.
