Weir Sawyer.jpg

The Wood Sawyer
Charles E. Weir

From the Met's description...

"The Wood Sawyer" is unlike any known early 19th-century genre scene in its positive focus on a Black figure. Painted by New York-trained Charles Weir (younger brother of the better-known Robert Weir), it is one of just two existing works by the artist. As noted in the title, the depicted figure is a ‘sawyer’, cutting wood to be sent down an open scuttle—visible with its chained cast-iron cap in the stone sidewalk—into the cellar of a hotel, identified by the hanging sign. The man’s elegant dress may also imply different responsibilities as a porter. The presence of rooting hogs in the middle distance indicate sanitation challenges in a rapidly industrializing New York, especially in working-class neighborhoods, where the animals also functioned as a source of food. On his 1842 visit to the city, English writer and social critic Charles Dickens was astonished by their "roving, gentlemanly, vagabond kind of life. They are never attended upon, or fed, or driven, or caught, but are thrown upon their own resources in early life, and become preternaturally knowing in consequence. . . . At this hour, just as evening is closing in, you will see them roaming towards bed by scores, eating their way to the last." That Weir chose to highlight both this critical urban problem and the significant labor of a free person of color reveals the topicality of the work.

Or...if one discards the blatant politics of victim-hood that the Metropolitan Museum of Art wallows in...it's an interesting scene that shows the evolution of a city.

59 St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery is a parish of the Episcopal Church located at 131 East 10th Street, at the intersection of Stuyvesant Street and Second Avenue in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. The property has been the site of continuous Christian worship since the mid-17th century, making it New York City's oldest site of continuous religious practice. The structure is the second-oldest church building in Manhattan.

112 having a black man as the main figure doesn't interest me as much as what the painting says about NYC of the time. I like how Weir captures the textures of clothing, stone and wood. It puts the focus on the man. The rest of the image is softer and, while revealing of the conditions of the city, it emphasizes the action and actor. The 'free range' hogs are of historical interest and I suspect few people are aware of hogs roaming loose in major American cities of the time. Not one I would hang but it is a well done example of that kind of art.

The Met may be assigning all sorts of modern social significance to the painting. (Gee. Who could have expected that.) Not knowing anything about Weir's politics, he may have just intended the painting to show a typical scene in NYC.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo

Trichinosis is a big deal. Brucellosis is.
In Texas hog meat cannot be donated or sold without inspection. Because hogs are omnivores (unlike deer and cattle) they're susceptible to more diseases and MUST be brought in alive to a processing station and then they're subject to USDA inspection before they're declared fit for human consumption.
You want them inspected? You have to catch and bring them in alive. And YOU are financially responsible for the inspection fees.
There are more than 24 diseases that people can get from wild hogs, the CDC notes. Most of these diseases make people sick when they eat undercooked meat. But brucellosis -- a risk factor with feral hog meat -- is different.

We shoot them and drag 'em to the ditch. Eye opening when you notice the buzzards haven't touched them for a week.

The Rise of the New York Stove Trade, c. 1800-1855

"Wood fuel was increasingly costly in New York City, and some consumers were turning to bituminous coal, shipped from Virginia or (in normal, peaceful times) from Britain, instead."

I agree. I also don't think it'll happen. Florida isn't the template we wish it was. It's looking more and more like a nice outlier. Arizona and Georgia seem desperate to RINO their way into permanent Dem control.

The real purple states like Michigan, Pennslyvania, and Wisconsin are still largely Dem controlled and that's not changing anytime soon. Trump winning there was about Trump very "unpolitical" appeal to normies who don't vote. Can Vance tap into that market enough to win in spite of the Dem machines there? I don't know but right now he seems a little too slick where Trump isn't (in a way that appeals to normies).

I just saw a YouTube video of some rando small golfing channel, where he analyzed a video (and the comments) of Trump and Bryson DeChambeau playing golf for a Wounded Warrior fundraiser. https://tinyurl.com/bdd3w76f

1- Commenters were impressed with Trump's golfing ability

2- Many comments were on how surprisingly "chill" and friendly Trump seemed. He was a regular dude you'd like to play golf with

3- Trump wasn't an ego maniac, but seemed genuinely impressed by DeChambeau's performance and enjoyed seeing a great golfer play

It's sad because many people would like Trump more if they saw this genuine side of him....it's no surprise the media works so hard to suppress it.

Everything is curated because that allows them to even the playing field of perception. What you describe is true, but it isn't the point. It's a specific manifestation of a general condition.

If they did more of this kind of thing with Trump, they would *have* to show natural interactions for Harris or else people would notice (even if only as a vague feeling that something is wrong). To keep things under control, natural interactions need to be avoided.

There are risks to this. If your candidate actually *is* personable, you can't show it. But since the typical condition of politicians is that they're demons, it's in everyone's best interest to ensure everything is curated.

The game of illusions that the Complex plays to put a sheen of ersatz humanity on the soulless automata handling the levers of power requires an absence of uncontrolled or natural interactions. That isn't about Trump so much as it's about the rest of them.

Walker met national donors who said, "You have to be squishy on immigration."

He then went squishy on immigration (no idea of what his views had been before because his tenure was all union based as far as I could tell).

Even in the face of Trump walking away with the nomination because of his stance on immigration, the donors wouldn't let any of their candidates take harder lines on the issue because it's that important to them.

A VP running for Prez election right after their term as VP almost never wins.
Unless the incumbent is still popular at the time of the election.

GHWB wouldn't have won without Reagan's popularity.
Gore lost because Clinton was never really that popular (he only won in 3-way races).
Mondale was Carter's VP, lol.
Ford, lol, no chance.
Johnson, only 'cause he killed his boss.
Nixon was Ike's VP, but didn't get the job until two presidents later.
Truman, was automatic after FDR, of course.

Historically, even with out the far-left baggage, Kamialaia as candidate this year was almost certain to lose.

452 Sierra Club was totally against illegal alien migration.

This makes sense, if one is officially concerned about pollution, mining, road building, water table declines, timber cutting, farmland destruction, energy demands on infrastructure and dams. They were also officially for Nuclear Power.

Gee. I wonder what happened? Well you get one guess. The big time donors didn't like national borders. And they didn't like nuclear power.

Sierra Club doesn't talk about such things any longer. Washington city works the same way.

You run for office, you take money from donor pacs. And whatever they want, you want too. Or you better, or no money for you.

This is why "Donald Trump and his kind must never be allowed to rise again" type comments are made publicly.
It's why no candidate policy even remotely approaches 100 million voters opinions on anything.

It really is extraordinary if you think about it. Neither party offers anything to voters. Nice work if you can get it. The press helpfully covers this all up, and provides "Look! Squirrel!" to keep people occupied.

Unless the incumbent is still popular at the time of the election.

Posted by: People's Hippo Voice at August 06, 2024 10:45 AM (l3206)

***

True, but we need to appreciate the unusual times we're in.

Kamala is a VP running after only a single term, and not in the way Mondale did (who ran after his term had ended). She's running as an incumbent VP after only a single term. Usually an incumbent VP runs after two terms and that means asking the electorate to give the party in power a third term in the white house. That's often a big ask for a country that often gets bored and likes change for the sake of it.

Next election, assuming Trump wins in 24, Vance will be running after being VP for only a single term. We'll be coming off the first time we've had a non-consecutive two-term Prez in 150 years.

There's not really a precedent here from which we could theorize.
