Meet The PetMorons

I’m a long time lurker at Ace of Spades but you can call me Rick. The first picture is of our dog Penny in her prime. Sadly, she crossed the rainbow bridge in June at 14 plus years. She was her mama’s baby.

The second picture is Dot with her toy gator. Unlike most of our dogs, she takes care of her toys and likes to stack them by her bed. She loves to show her toys to visitors. She has picked me as her human. She’s 12 years old now but still can act like a puppy.

So sorry that you have lost wonderful Penny. Dot sounds like a great dog. We would love to meet her in person.

I think this is a Swainsons hawk. Sits on our tree top watching for mice and voles when we water our hay fields. Very majestic.

The chickens: I usually have raised austrolorps but this year I got the variety pack to see who winters over the best. They all want to roost on the top rail even if it means sitting on top of one another.

I look forward to reading your posts each week.
It has been some time since I shared pictures of "my girls". Above is our 12+ pound "bull in a china shop" Maine Coon named Smudge who is almost 3. I've read where Maine Coon cats can be dog-like, and Smudge is no exception. I often call her "my dog" and she will follow me around just like one.
The Tabby is (Hou)Dini - a 13+ pound love bug about 6 years old. We picked her up from a friend of our daughter's. She was supposed to go to another family, but
they backed out. Their loss, because Dini is an awesome feline companion. These pictures were taken during a quiet period in the house when they weren't chasing/playing/fighting each other.

The picture which is mostly cropped above Dini's head is a framed picture of a farmer squiring cows milk at a pair of cats. Mrs OCiS and I grew up around farms and would have no doubt that Dini & Smudge would definitely line up from fresh-from-the-tap milk if given the opportunity.

Finally - a meme. Yes it is political, but also pet related.

Well, it's sorta political, maybe. Prayers for our pets and the former President that they may all have nine lives.

5 I know Mr Trouble hunted birds when he was homeless. I went out today and he had one I thought was dead. It moved and he bit it. So I took it away and released it into the neighbor's yard. Don't know how badly injured it was. Not sure what I can do to discourage that. It's never grackles.

Smudge is remarkable in his shagginess, and Dini is no slouch either.

KT, we need to know more about the new gray kitten! Boy or girl, long-haired or short, personal quirks, are you getting enough sleep or does he/she try to wake you up at 2 am. You know, the usual.

Early next month will mark two years since little Dagny La Siberienne came to live with Stirling and me. She is still a little aloof with me, never a lap cat, but she sometimes comes to sleep with me for part of an afternoon or a night, and seems to enjoy my petting. Maybe when she's an elderly lady she'll choose my lap on a cold night. Of course she'll have to contend with Stirling, who is the same age and level of health and may make it to "old codger" status as well.

Yes, it enlarged right after the pic of the orange Trumpy cat. If you adjust the font size so the comments look right, the text in the comment box is too small. If you increase it then, when your comment appears, the entire chain is too big.

NST, the felines here found a large roach one morning this past week. They were chasing and batting at it, and Stirling got it in his jaws and carried it around as though it were a mouse. It was still able to move after a while, and I was afraid it might crawl into someplace they could not reach. A good slam with a slipper took care of that . . . which ended their fun. Cats have no interest in something they did not kill themselves.

Come to think of it, I found the dried and stiffened corpse of a small lizard on the living room floor last night, and Miss Linda said Stirling had been chasing one.

I don't know the sex yet. Just showed up, and is sort of quarantined from the other animals, so cuddle time requires us to scrub down. Has mucus in eyes typical of kittens born in "the wild", but seems pretty robust. Was afraid of us on arrival.

Probably a short hair. Just old enough to eat wet cat food. Seems curious.

I'm pretty sure that did for big black Wolf in the fall of '21. It was very swift, and yet up to that time he did not seem sick and I thought of him as The Iron Cat. He drank water from his bowl and the tap, but would not use the fountain I'd gotten for him and Chekov.

Both of my current cats use it, but they still love water from the bathroom tap.

It's very quiet right now, everyone is asleep. A kitten, Colby, and two adults are quietly wandering around. I'm tired, stayed up for the SpaceX launch that ended up pushed to tomorrow almost at the last moment because of bad weather, so I missed many hours of sleep. At his second-to-last vet visit, the examining dr. told me he thought Stirling was overweight at 13 lbs. I tried to cut back on his portions, difficult with a second young cat right there. On his next visit he was 13.5, but nobody said anything about him being overweight. He's not roly-poly and he is definitely long-boned and active.

Vets tried to tell me Chekov was overweight sometimes, but he was only 12 lbs. most of his life and lived to be 14. Siberians are just built chunky and look larger because of all the fur.

41 Susannah the diabetic tortoiseshell cat is still not losing weight. I had hoped the medicine would have that effect. I put all food out of reach when I go to bed, and then feed her first thing in the morning, so she isn't noshing in the middle of the night. It doesn't seem like she eats all that much (but enough.)

I tried the coconut oil on Julius' ears for his mosquito allergy bumps. But he liked the taste, so would wash it all off to eat it. So I finally took him in for a steroid shot plus antibiotics, yet it doesn't seem to have had much effect.

I think I just worry too much; need to just let them be, beyond doing the best I can.

44 Sunny but hazed outside. I have no desire to know what temp it is, or the heat index. We may get some rain later this afternoon or evening.

I look forward to the day when I can open the front or back door of my house, leaving the screen closed, and let the cats sit to breathe and study the outside while letting cool, or at least not hot, air blow through the place for me.

Stirling has recently gotten the notion that occupying my seat on the couch when I get up is a fine thing for a large black cat to do. I have to shift him, and he squeaks in protest. It amazes me how they, all cats, change preferences for sleeping spots over time. These two both loved the back of the couch, and Miss Linda folded and placed a throw blanket up there for them. Now they never climb up there.

Tatiana the Wonder Siberian would chase her ball at high speed when I threw it for her, right into the kitchen, where the smooth tile gave her no way to stop. She'd thump up against the pantry door. I stopped throwing her ball that way.

What medicine is it?
That steroid plus antibiotic seems a favorite amongst vets, almost a placebo. A cop-out often as it doesn't resolve the issue at hand most of the time. They are guessing on what antibiotic to give if they don't do a culture first.

54 I let my kittehs free range on the dry food and give them a quarter can of wet food in the morning. I can gauge how much dry food they eat and it’s really not that much. I will soon switch to the 7 year plus food ( Science Diet dry food ) .

I recently read on the wet food can ( Applaws) that it is intended for use only as an intermittent or supplementary food product with appropriate dry food.

Kind of weird in that it’s pure protein which is all that all wild cats of all types eat . I guess domestics need vitamin and probiotic infused food to be their healthiest?

55 My Great Pyrenees Sweet Pea, is a year and a half old. I didn't gether fixed because I am still considering breeding her. Late May, my nephew's oldest daughter came out with her pb German Shepherd. My nephew called me to tell me that I might be expecting puppies in my future. Last Thursday I told my wife I think we dodged the bullet. I didn't think she looked pregnant and I thought she was past the gestation period. Friday morning, Mrs. Sock woke me up at 5am and informed me that we have 5 new additions. Cute little buggers and Sweetie is really excelling at the mom thing. Good news is we have already found homes for 4 of the 5.

57 Ciampino, the steroid was the depo-medriol or something similar. The antibiotic is only liquid Clavamox, as a preventative, because some of the bumps on his ears were raw.

I kind of agree with you, I think they don't really know anything else to do. Even if I kept Julius inside all the time, mosquitos still get in; they bite me too. He just happens to be allergic, and from what I read it will likely worsen over the years.

60 The cats we had in Africa, which we brought with, practically lived on canned pilchards - pure mashed sardines for cats, no salt or other things added. They did not like any other wet food from cans. They occasionally ate kibble. They all made it to 16+ years. Yet I;m told not to feed them a lot of fish, LOL.

Yea. Both dogs are very well behaved, intelligent dogs. Sweetie is this big, cuddly, friendly pup unless you are a predator. She takes the guardian role very seriously. I thought I might have trouble finding homes because it seems such a strange mix but fortunately I was mistaken.

66 Sorry, Ciampino--the diabetic med is the newish Bexacat, once a day, crushed in wet food. Love not having to give insulin, which is also more expensive. The only other person at my vet whose cat is on that, said that the cat lost weight. So I was hopeful. Maybe Susannah has lost a pound or so. I'll find out a week from Tuesday.

I found Rafferty and his sibling when they were about 3 weeks old. They were born feral and abandoned by mom. I bottle fed them with goat kid milk replacer. Mrs. Sock has a rough textured blanket she uses when she's cold. Both kittens decided it was the most comfortable place to sleep. It was that or my shoulder. Rafferty now thinks the blanket is his.

68 Yay Pet Thread. Thank you KT. Just got in from the lake. Cat 2 was pissed and ran to the tub so she could drink from the faucet while I showered. She's settled down now and sitting in cigar chair next to me.

69 I also look forward to having wood or tile floors, not carpet, so that if one of the cats throws up it'll be easy to clean it up.

Lol good luck with that. Even in a place with hard floors, my cats preferentially threw up on the rugs.

And on the one hand, yes it it harder to clean up
On the other hand, it means that if you do step on it, it won't make your feet slip out from under you. Which it will on a hard floor.

... I never tried putting out a rug specifically for the cats to vomit on, but that might be worth a try.

The kitten didn't just show up. A mom and three little girls brought it up to the door and asked The Mister if he could take care of it because "we have dogs".

They offered him goat's milk if that would help.

The Mister is a softie.

73 Has anyone any knowledge about rabies titers? The vets still can't decide about Lincoln getting his rabies vaccine because of his autoimmune problem. One of our neighbors, who has sheltie, gets rabies titers on his dogs before they get vaccines. If the titers are high they don't get the shots. They are Canadian but the laws in the US are pretty strict. We're getting ready to go on the road so we need an answer but no one vet can agree with another. We have an appointment with his vets on Wednesday and I had never heard of doing rabies titers. Is it a thing here or only just in Canada?

I like sardines. Sometimes I'll open a can, cut a slab of cheddar, blue cheese if I have any, olives, pickled onions (cocktail), hard-boiled egg, a fresh tomato, toast and make a lovely, tasty dinner.

75 No, they can check titers although I've never had it done. I'm on a Dogs with Seizures FB group and some of the members have that checked. I had to get one to have Jake groomed. Kinda ticked off at my vet because I've had to get some sort of shot the two times I've had him groomed.

76 Some rv parks ask for the rabies paperwork before we check in. I don't know if anyone would understand titers. I don't want him given a shot if it's not necessary but rabies is deadly and horrible. The vets need to get their heads together for him.
