Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Meet The PetMorons

digit m.jpeg

Meet Digit. So named because of the single white spot on the toe of her hind foot (she also has a bit on her throat.) I exercised executive authority in naming her. Slavyanka has already morphed it to Gigi.

Sunny is getting to know his new playmate and loving it. She and a male littermate, with the most defined stripes of any grey cat I’ve ever seen, were dumped at a friend’s farm. Farm wife kept the male, we got Digit.

Marty

Who could resist Digit? Look at those eyes! Wonderful photo.

Hi KT,

This is our 2 1/2 year old velociraptor named Heidi. She may look like a German Shepherd but don't let the disguise fool you.

She is a handful and then some but loves to fetch, dig holes, and mostly frighten delivery people.

She really likes the broke out window pane to look out and will have the sads when it gets repaired next week.

We got her at 8 weeks and I promptly left for a week long conference. The fetching Mrs Beartooth was not amused.

She loves the grandkids and I think she is glad when they leave because she'll sleep most of the next day.

Thanks for hosting the pet thread.

Beartooth

Heidi doesn't look too wild there, but I believe your description. Especially the part about digging holes.

Ajax Current.jpg

From Aetius451AD:

Ajax passed away on Sunday after coming down with pneumonia.
He was the smartest and most wonderful dog I have ever known and he was my constant companion for almost 15 years.

I miss you. See you again some day.

Heartbreaking that you have lost you beloved Ajax. He looks like a wonderful dog. I especially like the most recent photo of him. I expect you also have fond memories from when he was just 8 weeks old, and when he was growing up.

10 Aetius, I'm sorry for you loss. My tiny pup Hercules is getting lots of white in his face and (has always been) getting kinda skinny. I dread the day that's coming but it's part of life. Doesn't make it any easier but there was a drawing that depicted a guy in a bed with an IV and his doggeh was coming over the rainbow for him.

11 Greetings, all.

My Kids' Pup (which means he was really my dog even though I haven't lived with my Kids for 10 years), "Dash," crossed the rainbow bridge yesterday. 12 years and 2 days old, he couldn't walk, was incontinent, and could barely breathe any longer.

He was showcased on the 3/13/2021 Pet Thread, I believe.

Best Dog Ever, he was a Very, Very Good Boy.

22 I took Jake out camping on Monday in the teardrop. It was his first time. We drove up to rural NE, a couple of hours drive. I was headed for another town but stopped in Nelson. Happened to check the camping spots at the city park. Full hookups with concrete pads, surrounded by big trees. Decided to stay as we had it all to ourselves.

Then it decided to rain. Was pretty heavy with some thunder, which freaks Jake out. I found a classic rock station on the radio and it drowned it out. My setup worked okay, even when dealing with wet paws. He was okay going out at night until about three, when there was something out there that was just too scary for him to leave the trailer.

Not sure if he had fun, but I will be doing some more overnighters when it gets a bit cooler. I do have AC but didn't need it this trip.

23 My last cat, Baby Zoey, aka The Pudgy Princess, took her leave of me on June 10. It's been a very difficult adjustment but I've been soldiering on. Until yesterday when I was in the Kroger and walked past the cat litter aisle and started crying. I think I might be permanently broken. Didn't know where else to put this but I had to put it somewhere, so I'm putting it here. My condolences to all who have lost a little friend.

Thank you. It's astonishing to me that such a little critter can leave such a huge hole in my heart and my life and my home. I've always had 2, so there was always some comfort. At my age, I will not get another, for fear of them outliving me (no family or anyone to commit to caring for them), so it's an aloneness I've never experienced before.

Posted by: Peaches at July 27, 2024 03:53 PM (14URa)

30 Not a day goes by that something doesn't evoke a memory of my beloved Lab Elizabeth, always a memory that brings a smile. Probably she will be my last dog, my ginger does not want to endure the loss of another family member.

Nor do I in all candor.

31 Heh. I see Marty's "settling in" photo and realize I have an orange tabby almost identical to the one on the right. But his sister is a gray tortoiseshell rather than standard gray. And the other one is a regular tortoiseshell.

Got those three not a few months after my cat Buddy passed away. I hadn't planned on getting more cats after that but the good Lord had other ideas.

I'm so sorry! I think it may be harder with a dog, they're so interactive. Baby Z, much as I truly loved her for these last 15+ years (she's been on Ace pets), was more like a potted plant that ate and pooped. Never played, even as a kitten. Never once sat on my lap in all those years. But, yeah, I miss her like I would miss an amputated limb. It was a place to pour love and now I haven't anywhere to put that.

42 For those of you who are older but still healthy, you might consider fostering a pet on a short term basis. Our local dog rescue can always use foster families.

Of course there's always the danger of becoming a "foster fail" and deciding you can't give the animal up. (That's what we did with our dog, but we knew we wanted to adopt some dog permanently before we began fostering.)

80 Afternoon, pet folken! Handsome beasts today. Ajax looked like he was a handful too.

Digit will be a handsome girl. My little Dagny Sophia, La Siberienne, had been temp-named "Toesy" because of the tan patch she had, and has, on one rear toe. (Yeah, not much of a name, but when you're a breeder of purebred kittens, you've gotta call each one *something* until the adopter settles on a real on-the-papers name. I think she's better off with my sobriquet.) She's been a little more sociable, sitting near me on the sofa, sleeping with me once in a while, and parking her sturdy frame on the bathroom counter as I brush my teeth.

Stirling, the great black beast, continues to cuddle in my lap multiple times a day.

With big black longhair Wolf, it was kind of mutual: Left behind when his so-called humans got evicted, he made it clear he liked me, and settled right in when I brought him home.

Personally I think even the cats I paid for were adopted, not "bought." The size of the adoption fee has varied, but they were still adoptions.

84 All the flea and tick products have possible side effects since they are poisons and one pet may be very sensitive to a particular treatment. We had no problem with Brevecto. The Frontline (never again) 'burned' the skin at the application area on one kitty but he didn't seem to notice.

We treated Linda's Angelique with Hartz Mountain topical. Never, never again! She began to shiver and shudder. We washed her immediately to get the stuff off, and she was okay and lived a pretty long life. Linda insists the stuff got into the cat's nervous system and caused her to be irritable when sitting on you: If you shifted a leg, she'd growl at you (but not leave).

85 Ciampino, I have had nothing but good experiences with Bravecto and it has been so effective over time you can go from every 3 months to longer periods without having to redose them.

88 Cimpiano, Ivermectin is excellent for fleas and ticks and mites etc. It is contraindicated for “white foot” or herding dog breeds. And Turtles.

89 My last cat, Baby Zoey, aka The Pudgy Princess, took her leave of me on June 10.

Peaches, I miss all my former feline friends. When Arizona, the big red tabby who'd shared my life and moves (and one wife) for 16.5 years passed away on a Friday night, I didn't know how to handle it. People walking upstairs, I wanted to shoot them. I actually went to a free pet-loss support group advertised at the local shelter -- went once a week for a month. That helped a lot. Maybe you could try that?

90 I've never fostered a cat. Something tells me I would find it hard to give him or her back if we got along well.

91 Condolences and hugs to Aetius, Peaches, Sharkman and others mourning for a beloved friend.

Ajax had beautiful eyes.

92 I had two stop-overs last year. Both Shepard crosses. Starved, exhausted and neglected. I would have gladly kept them both. After a couple of days of food and a safe place to sleep they both left. They were on a journey somewhere . You hear of dogs that travel hundreds of miles looking for lost families.

93 We've had off-and-on rain here today. When I got up and checked AoS half an hour ago, hot sun was pounding on my window. Now it looks cloudy.

I need to shower, but I'll put the monsters' current can of food out to warm up and run some water in their bowls to clean them.

Big black Stirling is sitting up on the arm of the sofa with me, while Dagny is regarding me steadily from her perch near the TV. They know it's time for dinner.

94 Afternoon.

Digit looks remarkably like my late lamented Sadie. She didn't have a white spot on her foot but the tips of her fur on her feet were a little "frosty." Might have been age by the end.

Otherwise Digit looks like a Russian Blue. Blues are the best. Treat her well and you will have the most weirdly loving primadonna kitty in the world.

96 It's me donna, For some reason I don't remember I stopped at the animal shelter. I made the mistake of saying let me see what you have. Scooter looked at me and said "I knew you were coming to get me". He was right. He had been returned to the shelter 3 times in his short life but he had his forever home here.

Yes, same experience and that's what I wanted but the vet was out of it (he said, or he was trying to get rid of that Frontline). I didn't even have to dose all the cats since the fleas move from animal to animal.
I've had no problems with this last batch of Revolution.

My sister in law retired a couple years ago and started volunteering at a dog rescue. They had 5 or 6 dogs when she started. Now they have 9 or more, including 2 part wolfhounds that are just a couple of years old and still very puppyish.

107 Aetius

Condolences on your loss of Ajax.

That hurts. I relate to "phantom limb" condition.

Every time I've adopted a dog, I've reminded myself on the way home that, "You know a sad day is coming. Don't forget and let it sneak up on you."

My own beloved 14-yr-old GF Callie is failing. I've never loved her more. It's such a helpless feeling.
