Trump is a maverick, though, so that tradition may mean very little. I mentioned this in the sidebar: A commenter posted that oddsmakers have increased the odds that Virginia governor Glenn Youngkin is the pick. I prefer Vance, but Youngkin is governor of Virginia, and Virginia is a swing state whereas Ohio is not (and hasn't been for years). Polls show Trump tied with Biden in blue Virginia. Well, two polls showed Trump tied there, but a NYT/Siena poll just dropped showing Biden with a three point lead, 48-45. It's close. If you take Virginia from Biden, it's over. I think it's already over and you don't have to scheme to take Virginia, but the old idea that you pick a governor to swing a state would suggest Youngkin is the better candidate. This is a terrible, terrible idea, obviously:

He even went as far as suggesting Trump could be "America's Hitler" in a private message.
Vance did not vote for Trump in the 2016 election and wrote an op-ed for The New York Times titled "Mr. Trump Is Unfit For Our Nation's Highest Office".
He changed his tune in 2021 but this makes him suspect, even Cruz changed his tune earlier than that

Voters don't vote for VP at any material scale. Voters vote for president, if anybody.
VP choices are about power in the upper echelons of the party. Granting the VP slot to a particular member of a particular faction within the party is effectively giving them clearance to be "next in line". Most of the time, it's consolidation or the sharing of power between factions. This is what both the Pence and Kamala picks were.
That's not what the Vance pick is. This is Trump telling the GOPe that he's in charge, fully, and completely, and they can get on board or be discarded entirely.

He says when he met his wife in law school all he had to his name was a lot of student debt and a cemetery plot in E. Kentucky. He then goes on to explain why that is important part of his life story.
I was moved by this speech.

Nope, the usual is that any resignation occurs after the November election. You can serve as senator technically up to the moment of being sworn in as VP.
The usual is governor DeWine will appoint to fill the seat in January if Vance gets elected until a special election occurs. Via Ohio state law, an appointee can serve up to November 2026 election.

I'd say Trump also has the working and middle class, so in that sense, Vance is a bit redundant. However, Vance has all the credentials that matter with the smart set: Yale, VC, and best of all, they can burnish their own credentials by supporting the guy who wasn't born with a Ag thermometer up his butt.
My preference was for Youngkin, but it's remarkable that we are so spoiled for choice, that Vance is also very desirable.

Well, having lived in NJ for many years and changed political parties and philosophies, I take these sorts of things (that you work in NYC of San Fran) with a grain of salt. Some of the strongest conservatives in an online parents group which I look at are people who came from India-some of whom work in NYC. Why? One thing that really bothered me was a former USSS guy interviewed on fox that I saw -- he tried to sell that the anti-sniper fired just as the assassin fired, and the reason the assassin missed was because he was hit with a barrage of incoming fire and that threw off his aim.

I watched that. The former SS guy made it sound like it is near-impossible for SS snipers to do the job. 'They have to search out to a 1000 yards! There are a lot of farm fields and a highway, a car dealership and other buildings in that area!'
OK, what's the plan, Mr Retired Expert? A handful of snipers and spotters have to actively monitor all overlooking positions within a thousand yard radius? How can they possibly be expected to do so using rifle scopes, binos, and spotting scopes, mostly having fairly small fields of view?? Overlooking direct view positions must be secured and patrolled. Snipers are the last defense.

Not really - they all have been trying to stop the US rush towards all out nuclear war for some time. Russia will continue its advance but that was a given. China is glad if we are too distracted to create a crisis in Taiwan to embarrass them.
Trump is pretty ideal to make a place for the US in the new economic world that isn't a hostile bloc versus everyone else. That ship has sailed.

My best guess is that guy was the spotter at the time for that pair. The prone guy was the shooter. I do not know if or how often they would change roles. If so, The Big Problem is - why is the spotter using his rifle scope to spot? It has a relatively small field of view. This is why he had to raise his head up, IMO - to get situational awareness and figure out where to point his small FOV optic to see the scumbag. Reviewing the video I don't believe either of those guys made the shot. That jibes with recent reports that a sniper in a tree, farther distant from the scumbag than those two guys, made the shot.

Of course that isn’t true but nobody in NC or GA would switch a vote to Trump because he picked the governor of VA for VP.
Frankly I’m glad Trump didn’t pick Youngkin just to stick it in the eye of all those “Republican” liberal government employees in NoVa that are sucking the country dry and thinking they are the most important people in the universe.

Had Trump gone with a Rubio, Scott, or even my governor Youngkin: I would not have voted for Trump.
Moreover, picking Vance is a robust form of assassination insurance. - Doesn't guarantee they won't try to kill him again. But it will at least give them pause. And it just might prevent further attempts.

Hi Fd - I don't want to discount your families vote - they are valued. Of course, and it's a blessing!
But the Teamsters lead all the other Unions - and they are the muscle that get out the vote for the Dems - they have since they were formed. They put out their typical Dem preference about this time every year - a call to arms to brother unionist groups to get out the vote and drive and/or coerce the vote their way - and they are hugely successful in industrial areas. And they control the ballots in Penn, Ohio, Illinois, NY and other places...
The fact that they have refused to endorse or release their intimidation against their "drive the vote" legions is a huge, unbelievable blow to Dems - Not sure it has happened in the last 70 years.

Pharma AND attorney ads were banned from TV and radio for many years. Around 35 or so years ago, that banned was lifted. Attorneys were permitted to advertise in the Yellow Pages only. Advertising in the media was considered "unethical". Yeah, I know. LOL!!

On J.D. ... IMO he's the best of the ones mentioned as possibles. He's got a true American success story. Born poor, raised by his grandmother, has personal experience with how drugs harm the family unit and can speak to that at the convention and on the subject on the border.
He also did well by getting into Yale and then married the daughter of Indian immigrants. That's also good pushback in speaking about the current illegal immigration crisis we're enduring.
And, it seems, he pisses off all the right people. Good enough for me.
