Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Hobby Thread - July 13, 2024 [TRex]Welcome hobbyists! While you mourn the passing of Dr. Ruth and Richard Simmons, pull up a chair and sit a spell with the horde. Do not adjust your interweb. This thread is headed to olden days. A spin of the Ace of Spades wheel of hobbies has come up with a theme of family history and genealogy for this week. Who am I? Where did I come from? How did I get here? Have you traced your family's history? How far back does your knowledge go? Do you have famous (or infamous) ancestors? Have you done research on the web or books? How has family history been passed down to you (i.e., photographs, old family bibles, etc.)? Have you physically visited towns and places in your heritage? Where are your ancestors laid to rest? Do you have favorite sources or techniques for finding family history? Do you have stories of finding unexpected things in your family line? Has anyone unexpectedly contacted you in their family history search? Do you save and scan old photos? Do you have boxes of photos or family papers that need sorting, labeling, scanning, etc.? Do you have old family photos, but no idea who is in them? Let's not turn this thread into a Jerry Springer episode with crazy family stories. We can also leave aside comments on Mormon theology or marriage practices. We're here to talk about family records and research and history. As usual, keep this thread limited to hobbies. Politics and current events can wait for other threads - even those involving candidate family dynamics. Play nice. "Dead people are easy to love. It's the living ones who are hard." ~ Laurence Overmire There is a lot to be said for going deep down the rabbit hole of boat passenger lists, census records, military service files, old maps, birth and death certificates, and old newspaper databases. In the era of technology and access to computers, more and more data is being digitized and recorded. On-line databases allow access to treasure troves of information from the comfort of your living room. Another element involves the exact opposite - researching family history can be an excuse to go places and meet people you would never have been and met otherwise. We've met lovely people (not just family relations), walked numerous graveyards, met caretakers, been invited into homes, shuttled around farmland in a personal car by someone we just met, found charming villages and churches, and traced military unit movements. We like history and appreciate knowing more about our ancestors but genealogy has been a gateway to places and people.Top photo - the ancestral seat of the imperial House of Hohenzollern is Hohenzollern Castle, located in Baden-Wurttemberg in Germany. The castle was built between 1846 and 1867 and is more of a showpiece than an actual residence. It is one of Germany's most visited castles. The Ancestral Hall walls are decorated with the family tree. The dynasty goes back to the 11th century. Red colors on the tree belong to the Swabian branch and blue belongs to the Franconian branch. The descendants are listed on the walls up to the present day. Why Is Genealogy Important to Mormons? Mormons, Genetics, & Digitized Data Search resources for those not sure where to start: Do you have an ancestor that came through Ellis Island? Check out the free Ellis Island Passenger Search database. It has 65 million records of passengers arriving to the Port of New York from 1820 to 1957. The Find-a-Grave website has an enormous database of cemeteries and those resting comfortably in those cemeteries. There are photos of many headstones and family information about other relatives. FamilySearch is the free equivalent to Ancestry.com. It is run by the Mormon church. A free account is required to dig beneath the surface, but it can be a resource if you're looking for an easy place to start. Top tip: if you're doing research, find primary sources - and validate where possible. If you're copying the results of others, you may be repeating and perpetuating mistakes. I play Warlord's Bolt Action WWII 28mm miniatures game and they just announced Version 3. So far from the stuff they have released the entire list building mechanics have changed. It appears I am going to have to paint up more officer teams for all of my army lists.
Luckily I have stashed extra figures in plastic boxes from all of my army builds over the years and more importantly, I have kept notes on what colors I used to paint them. Some of the armies I have built date back over 10 years. No way I could remember what colors I used back then. Posted by: Mister Scott (Formerly GWS) at July 13, 2024 05:34 PM (QNSds) 6

Miss Linda bought me one of those DNA things last year and she went into the search full force. There have always been gaps in my knowledge of my family's history -- my mother told me some things, my father almost nothing. Well, she found out stuff I'd rather have not known (and I'll be quiet about those as our thread host has requested). But I found and visited my father's grave, and I now know i have some Irish genes as well as the German, Swedish, and Ruthenian (read: Ukraine, I think) I'd always known about.

So, while I am awake…
My father’s background is straightforward. English ancestry, who knows when they got to American, regardless, they headed west and the family settled in either IL or MO. His family can be found on either side of the Mississippi in those states. My mother? Forget it. We know where in Germany she was born and beyond that…we have determined that thanks to my grandfather’s side of the family there is a great deal of Eastern European ancestry. We have managed to pinpoint that, though he is (mostly) Czech he was born in a small town in what is today Hungary though we cannot find any Hungarian (apparently the Eastern European involves Czechia and points north and east, up to and including Russia). My great aunt was a librarian and spent all of her spare time researching family history and erasing the parts she didn't like.
There's another one over at the college, from the other side of the family doing the same thing. Posted by: Braenyard, can't help himself at July 13, 2024 05:39 PM (aNKhG) 12

The sad thing about genealogy is that by the age family history is important to most people, those with the knowledge have passed. Talk to anyone and everyone around you when you can. Many libraries contain genealogical sources. Not all are limited to local information. Some libraries subscribe to the library version of Ancestry. More versatile, more info than private versions, especially non-U.S. materials. Some require going to the library. Others allow accessing from home thru the library's digital services with your library card.

Posted by: JM in Ill -- Behold the Manchurian Candidate at July 13, 2024 05:40 PM (6KLK+) *** Not really. DNA testing tries to match you with DNA characteristics of groups in various geographies. It makes a probability guess based on how closely you line up and what groups you line up with. Research is going to be more granular - dates of life events, locations of burial, military service, occupations, marriage, geographic moves, etc. The tricky bit of DNA testing is whether you opt to link up to others still living that appear to be related and/or learn about higher risk of hereditary medial issues. My mother told me that General Ben McCulloch was my great (great) grandfather. Well, that was what she was told. When he was killed in the Civil War (I), his widow married his law partner. So, about 40 years ago I read in Bruce Catton's Centennial History of the Civil War that General Ben McCulloch was a friend and neighbor of Davy Crockett. He went out to survey the enemy (Union troops) at the Battle of Pea Ridge, wearing some ridiculous velvet uniform and was quickly shot by a Union sharpshooter. I asked my mother "If he was Colonel of the Texas Rangers, "a redoubtable frontiersman" how could he be also a lawyer in Little Rock? She could not answer. My sister, in her research found out that a gentleman by the name of Joseph B. McCulloch was our ancestor. He got sick during the Civil War and died. I pray for his soul often. After Mrs. JTB more or less exhausted her research, she thought to try my family. Fortunately, my dad's side was pretty well covered. In 1939, some of the family combed through every available church and civic record and put together a book for the first 300 years since the first ancestor came to Quebec City. I didn't know it existed but when we talked to my oldest uncle he had a copy and let me make one for ourselves. It might be worth checking if some relatives have done something similar for your family.

OE, I'm kind of the same way. I didn't ever meet any of my grandparents or my parents' siblings, and anybody older than the g-parents passed away long before I was born. If I had known any of the grands, uncles or aunts, or cousins, it might be different, and I might be too.
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at July 13, 2024 06:03 PM (omVj0) WA, my mom's grandparent's on gpa's side were still alive when I was born. Don't know if they knew I was alive or not, because they were in KS at the time they died and I was in CA. I was four, so I expect they knew about me, but I have no pix with them. Maternal gma's father died a month before I was born and her mom was long passed, I have to assume he knew I was coming, because he wasn't non-compos. I knew mom and dad's aunts and uncles except for a couple of them. That's as far back as I can go with personal contact. The one in Durham Eng in 1577 may be family, but with FA Grave being sometimes suspect, who knows. He knew not me, and I knew not him, so even if he is who he's claimed to be, it doesn't matter. Actually I like Haunted Bookshop, both the blend and the Christopher Morley connection. But I find it is better if smoked very slowly in a small bowled pipe so the flavors come out otherwise it is a bit strong. Not a blend I would use for an hour's smoke. HB is one of those blends that people either enjoy or hate.
Posted by: JTB at July 13, 2024 *** Well, I did have it in a small pipe, but I'm still (after three years back in the hobby!) working on slowing my cadence down. The odd thing is that I bought a tin of mild Romeo y Julieta cigarillos, and I find myself now and then chopping up part of one into an English blend and liking the combo. Genealogy is fascinating to me. But, I have not delved into it much. I do know that my direct paternal ancestor arrived in Colonial America from Ulster, but not before being kidnapped by pirates and taken to the West indies until the clan paid the ransom. He then settled in Virginia (in the part that became West Virginia). Another ancestor was a red-leg in Washington's Army during the Revolution.

Our family history is not hard to find, most of it is written in family bibles, including REALLY OLD ones, some in History books, The Domesday Book, some even in Shakespeare. Been here in the "New World" since 1650.Helped settle in the "New West"(trading with the indians, making a homestead near Cooperstown NY, before Mr Cooper), rode in the retaliation raids after the Cherry Massacre, fought in EVERY war since then, helped dig the Erie Canal, between planting and harvesting seasons(It paid .25 a day cash money, with a horse it paid $1, they walked there the 1st time, rode there the next, with extras). One of the 1st Captains in the US Navy, before there were ships...later, Captain of the US Constitution. Several members were officers of "Coloured Troops" in the Civil War. They also were connected to the Underground Railroad. Explored and opened horse/cattle trading to Texas in 1850(I have the journals, camped one night at the tumbled down, abandoned Alamo, but there was a German camped there with his goats, and it stunk so bad they moved on), brought train loads of horses back on a regular basis, until that Infernal Combustion engine contraption put that business under.

It's fun to watch "Finding your roots" on PBS w/prof Gates. He and his team have developed some excellent resources/sleuthing skills, and they do a good job highlighting how everybody has heroes and hardships in their past.
A friend recently noted re: looking at the past: "It's easy to judge actions, it's harder to understand why choices were made." Think the downside of judging family or people from generations past is that you can't begin to understand the context, and what other options they may have had, if any. Sure, some things are easy to judge - like, say, a mass murderer. But there's a lot of gray area, too. For example, (hope I'm not violating the rules!) I am descendent of Hannah Dustin. She did something bad to survive - she killed her native American captors (she was a hero in her time). In the 2020's she's a villain. Oh well. . . If there was anyone of historical note in my ancestry, they kept it quiet. But the research can serve as a springboard to historical events and times. Also, it can turn up some odd things or humorous matters.
Turns out that one ancestor was the captain of a local militia unit during the battle of Quebec in the F and I War and faced a Highland unit on the British side. Fortunately, both sides couldn't shoot worth a damn. The Scot ended up staying in Canada and married the daughter of the French Captain. He was a very big guy compared to all the Frenchies and even had a nickname, in French, noting that. An interesting aside is that each generation after that have had a few unusually large folks. I'm one of them. And that also explains why I still have most of my hair. Many of my male cousins started going bald right after high school. Posted by: JTB at July 13, 2024 06:39 PM (zudum) 165
