45 Navigation, they used the stars to locate and fix position when they went into outer space to the moon and beyond.

Sailors of old, even landlubbers like Lewis and Clark had to make "celestial observations" that took a lot of training and practice.

This spring I found some neat benchmarks and things like that along the San Juan river goosenecks. It was actually a section marker or whatever it is called. Not for elevation. Marked 1909, it must have been an expedition in those days just to get everything surveyed accurately. Maybe they did it from the river, I suppose. Probably no roads at the time.

The Antikytheria mechanism shows that the heavens have been understood for a really long time. Not by me. If I can find the Big Dipper and the North Star, we're doing pretty well. What day is it again?

Years ago I got together with a bunch of friends to go tuna fishing. You have to go about 40 miles offshore here to get into the pelagics and it was a windy, rough day.

We hadn't been together in a couple years so naturally we had to go out the night before which bled into the morning. Left the dock at 4 am and by 5 all of us had hurled. Our buddy who was driving from the fly bridge had a bucket between his legs so he didn't have to leave the wheel.

Only time I've been seasick but at least I was in good company.

A few years back I went to a particularly bizarre overlook along the Colorado and I couldn't process it. They had very stout railings and the rest of it, I didn't even want to get near those even. Just made me disoriented looking at the view. When I was younger I was hopping around the hoodoos and crazy stuff like that.

Intense on-the-job training by longtime seamen

Reading the 'Master and Commander' book series, most officers went to sea as midshipmen at a pretty young age, to learn navigation, command, gunnery, and sailing skills from long-time officers. Rookie seamen were initially assigned to deck and below deck drudge tasks while they were taught sailing and gunnery skills at the rate they could learn.

ones near roads are often state DOT, at least around here.

not all those who wander are lost.

but if one were, a nice benchmark and even rudimentary navigation could put one back on track.

a few years ago I bought a dozen little 1/2" diameter compasses like they used to hide inside uniform buttons, just a little needle in a housing; I have one in just about every hiking pack and jacket pocket as a layer of fallback under the just-in-case clause.

There were exceptions like lost Scandis who somehow found their ways back, but until Columbus humans stayed as close to shore as they could with few shortcuts when the know sea was fully mapped all around.

Maybe, the IRS doesn't call they send letters (state revenue is some states do call)

The letter should have an ID number. Look the IRS number up in a phone book or from the IRS website, and call to ask

turbo tax is notoriously lax about taxes, they don't really care. Also check with the state revenue to make sure there is not any problems as well, sometimes TurboTax doesn't get the state return mailed and no one notices for a couple of years.

187 If keeping Joe under wraps was the plan, the spell has been broken. I watched some of the after action reports and the press was not happy, this was not some grand strategy insofar as they aren't that good at acting. I think they saw the potential for replacement, but they are dimly aware that this ain't as easy as it sounds. The press is being reactive here, not proactive?

200 sometimes the IRS wants better documentation, so be prepared to dig that out too.
If there is an IRS change in the tax return the state one will be changed automatically so once your kid is done with the IRS he gets to do it all over again with the IRS. this is the secondary value of providing all the proof the IRS needs to show that he and not the IRS is correct in the tax return.

212 54 How humans sailed the sea for thousands of years... they stuck close to the coast until Columbus had that crazy idea.
There were exceptions like lost Scandis who somehow found their ways back, but until Columbus humans stayed as close to shore as they could with few shortcuts when the know sea was fully mapped all around.

You’ve got to add the Polynesians in there somewhere. Not only did they not stick to the coasts they colonized most of the Pacific and some scholars think they made it all the way to Chile.

All that in little more than glorified dugout canoes and catarmarans. Much props.

217 turbo tax is notoriously lax about taxes, they don't really care. Also check with the state revenue to make sure there is not any problems as well, sometimes TurboTax doesn't get the state return mailed and no one notices for a couple of years.
