Our micro-town put on a surprisingly good fireworks shpw last year, we'll see if they can do it again! But, the most reassuringly American Independence Day I had was in Van Horn several years ago. Waiting overnight for a new water pump, went to the local softball park and watched individual families shoot fireworks for a couple of hours.

Back in the mid '60s, the dads on our street would pool their money and hit the fireworks stand.
The moms would make homemade ice cream. Waiting for dark, we kids would play with the 'snakes', the cardboard tanks and hens and eat the ice cream. Then when we were all herded onto one lawn, the dads would shoot the fireworks off in the street. I can still see them standing around, puffing on the cigars they used as punks. This was in Austin, believe it or not... A treasured memory. I actually like that lots of people call it Independence Day and lots of other people call it the Fourth of July. The first holds us to what its about, and the second helps keep it from being turned into just another anonymous three day weekend.

My smallish hometown did a fireworks show every year. The family tradition was not to go where everyone else did but instead, Dad knew the perfect parking lot at the local community college where we could see the whole show. One of the radio stations played generic patriotic music all night (KVIL maybe?) and so we'd listen to that. Eventually the city partnered with one station to "coordinate" the music. This was the early 90s so this was a newish thing.
Before that, we'd watch the Boston Pops concert and fireworks on TV. I think PBS aired it. Mom grew up in Boston, so it was sentimental and happy for her. I had a major appreciation for the 1812 Overture and Stars & Stripes Forever because of it. Good stuff. It wpuld be neat to share this with my kids, but I shudder to think of PBS airing anything like that now. If they even would, I'm sure it would be full of Victim Class Native American crabbing about the Bostonians employing cultural appropriation during the Tea Party. There was a big one (in Europe I think) six months ago using something like 1500 drones computer programmed to illustrate scenes from The Nutcracker. The audience was in a stadium.
