I can still see them standing around, puffing on the cigars they used as punks.
This was in Austin, believe it or not...

Seattle has a huge display on Lake Union using downtown as a backdrop. It's beautiful. Here on the beach, it will be loud and chaotic well into tomorrow morning. They've been warming up all week. I guarantee you, I heard a 1/2 stick go off last night. It was a deep booming widow rattling explosion.

Lucy is not a fan, so I have a little hidey hole cardboard box in the back of the closet all set up with her favorite blankie.

Some people shy away from that concept, because it really does mean our government is given over to a hostile foreign entity, and it was easy for corporate media to pretend that was true of Trump and Rooshia.

157 I actually like that lots of people call it Independence Day and lots of other people call it the Fourth of July. The first holds us to what it’s about, and the second helps keep it from being turned into just another anonymous three day weekend.

I kind of look forward to finding out if Juneteenth will end up not on a teenth. Since nobody outside of Texas knows what it means anyway (and precious few of them judging from my town’s celebration of it) I expect it will.

170 My smallish hometown did a fireworks show every year. The family tradition was not to go where everyone else did but instead, Dad knew the perfect parking lot at the local community college where we could see the whole show. One of the radio stations played generic patriotic music all night (KVIL maybe?) and so we'd listen to that. Eventually the city partnered with one station to "coordinate" the music. This was the early 90s so this was a newish thing.

Before that, we'd watch the Boston Pops concert and fireworks on TV. I think PBS aired it. Mom grew up in Boston, so it was sentimental and happy for her. I had a major appreciation for the 1812 Overture and Stars & Stripes Forever because of it. Good stuff.

It wpuld be neat to share this with my kids, but I shudder to think of PBS airing anything like that now. If they even would, I'm sure it would be full of Victim Class Native American crabbing about the Bostonians employing cultural appropriation during the Tea Party.

Who is this Zuma? The only one I know is the past President of South Africa, who was tried for rape of a woman with AIDS (his precautions were to take a shower afterwards), blamed her for wearing short skirts, etc. I can't even imagine the uncouth individual amongst the supposed 'royalty' at a G7 for example.

There was a big one (in Europe I think) six months ago using something like 1500 drones computer programmed to illustrate scenes from The Nutcracker. The audience was in a stadium.

And that was beautiful, amazing on such a scale!

In late 2018, saw the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular that had an integrated drome performance. It, too, was fantastic.

OTOH, during the peaceful largely peaceful demonstrations, our democratic politicians had drones up, watching the reactions of average citizens and/or homeowners.

When I was in Colorado, I was surprised to see fireworks in the grocery store.

Looked more like a lot of varieties of things that sparkle and shoot out pretty colors. No boom booms.
