  • Europe wants to deploy datacenters into space. Studies say it's feasible. (CNBC)
ASCEND's space-based data storage facilities would benefit from "infinite energy" captured from the sun and orbit at an altitude of around 1,400 kilometers (869.9 miles).
Well congratulations, your datacenter is now permanently running away from you at sixteen thousand miles per hour.

Fortunately the writer of this piece spoke to some people who aren't certifiably insane:
Winterson estimates that even a small 1 megawatt center in low earth orbit would need around 280,000 kilograms of rocket fuel per year at a cost of around $140 million in 2030 - a calculation based on a significant decrease in launch costs, which has yet to take place.
That's not the launch cost, that's the upkeep.

And that's for a tiny datacenter. The AI center Tesla is building right now is targeting not 1 megawatt but 500 - which would cost $70 billion per year to maintain given these assumptions.

Back on Earth, Tesla is spending around $4 billion on the entire datacenter.

  • After the malicious domain polyfill.io was shut down by the domain registrar, it switched to polyfill.com. (Bleeping Computer)

Which had much less impact because nobody was using polyfill.com.

The registrar for that domain shut it down as well, and the hackers switched to polyfill.cloud - and a whole list of other domains, including various forms of bootcdn, bootcss, and staticfile.

In an interesting twist, the hackers behind the polyfill.io scheme (the original Polyfill library itself is innocuous and its developer innocent of all this) put their code on GitHub including their API keys and database password.

So if they hadn't already been taken off line they would have been hacked by now.

  • Unraveling Factorio's Lua security flaws. (Memory Corruption)

The game Factorio lets you add scripts written in the programming language Lua, which is intended to be safe - or mostly safe - for such things.

One researcher found that a malicious script could hack every player in a multi-player Factorio game simultaneously.

The article is excruciatingly detailed, which is great for me because I myself have written code that embeds Lua for scripting and I need to know this stuff.

Normal people will likely tune out after page 30.

  • A French court ordered global DNS providers like Google and Cloudflare to poison their data in order to block a pirate streaming site. Rather than comply, OpenDNS blocked France. (TorrentFreak)

Which has the same net effect: If you're in France you can't access the site by using OpenDNS.

Time to run my own DNS server again, maybe. Not that it's particularly hard; I have two dedicated and two virtual Linux servers running at the new house now.

  • The Associated Press is setting up a sister organisation explicitly for pay-to-play propaganda. (AP News)

The AP itself will continue with its current function of providing propaganda for backroom deals and political favours rather than cash.

  • Writing technical books for money. (The Architect Elevator)
Rule 1: Never write a technical book for the money.
    Oh. Also:
Authors are those people who consider $500 a lot of money.
Publishing is pretty miserable for small authors now - which is to say anyone who isn't getting the benefit of a seven-figure money laundering deal - but then it always has been.

  • An experiment in Denver doled out varying levels of UBI to three test groups. (Colorado Sun)

    Oh? What happened.
The percentage of people who had housing at the 10-month check-in of the Denver Basic Income Project climbed to 45%.
Well, that sounds great. What's the catch?
They were separated into three groups. Group A received $1,000 per month for a year. Group B received $6,500 the first month and $500 for the next 11 months. And group C, the control group, received $50 per month.
    Seems reasonable.

Group A gets a small but steady income. Group B gets a big advance so they can get out of whatever hole they're in, but a much smaller income. And Group C gets shafted. Such is life.
About 45% of participants in all three groups were living in a house or apartment that they rented or owned by the study's 10-month check-in point, according to the research.
If the results in the control group are indistinguishable from the results in the trial group, the medicine had no effect.

12 Evening and morning to all the AoSHQ satellites in space and beyond! (Well, you know, since we're talking about data centers in space, and all . . .)

I'm up half an hour earlier than I intended, thanks to an energetic, bed-leaping black cat who, after an incident yesterday afternoon, is now known far and wide as Goblet Killer. A little milk has gone into the coffee this morning. Funny, but for years I never put milk or cream in my coffee; now I often do. Never say people don't change.

Planning to go work out in a little bit. Must resist the urge to look online to see the heat index, or I won't go.

How about your Saturday night/Sunday morning/Sunday evening?

14 Good morning! Cedar tongue and groove on the back patio ceiling (34'x8') is almost complete. Took the opportunity to replace the skinny cedar support beams the last owner had painted with new 6'x6' beams and reduce the number to open the sight lines between the patio seating areas and the pond. Gonna finish today and then do the front porch which is only a 10'x10' space. I think next week I'll be ready to start the construction on the patio bar/grill stand. Or just take a week or three off and chillax.

If I'm reading this correctly, according to Joe Biden, what America needs most is unrestricted abortion because MAGA men just can't stop raping young women. This is unlike the saintly immigrants, who occasionally and most likely because of MAGA oppression, have been known to commit an occasional indiscretion. Joe Biden may have dementia, but what's even worse is he is willing to use rape and murder to smear innocent men who are inconvenient for him.

That seems like a possibility IF she were to initiate the provisions of the 25th. The flip side of that coin is that would also mean that Barky would lose the opportunity to run a fourth term.

82 I like the UBI that is baked into the Fair Tax.

It assumes that there is a tax on every retail item. To make sure the tax is not regressive there is a monthly stipend sent to all head of households equal to the family size.
This basically negates the national tax for the poor and at the same time encourages work as earning extra on top of the stipend (prebate) is not punished.

I was fishing last summer and I came across this bicycle which seemed to be powered but what made me stop and look was all the compartments for storing rod and tackle. The young man who owned it started talking and I don't think he stopped for the next 15 minutes. He talked about the bike, the jobs he's worked at, the job he's working at now... just about everything under the sun. I knew he was off a bit, but I didn't want to be rude. What made me laugh was somewhere toward the end when he told me how he really likes girls. He repeated it a couple times.

I guess I shouldn't have been surprised or amused.

The ideal would be a house facing south on an east-west street. Less hot sun in summer, more sunlight coming in during the winter.

(Well, the *ideal* would be that setup in a drier, cooler climate.)

At the time when we bought this house, we didn't realize the orientation would have such an impact.

North facing front, but in the winter the sun really strikes the back half of the house, filling it with light and warmth. Perfect for the winter.

In the summer, the sun is mostly in the front of the house, while most family activity, and yard activity is in the back, which has far less sun.

Sadly it is more like 26 to 32% at the Federal Level. And it has zero effect on the state system as they would go about collecting taxes as they normally do. All retailer collect (or exempt) state and local taxes. Adding a 3rd or 4th item and remitting that to another account would be simple. And remember the Fair Tax is baked into the prices just a taxes are baked into prices today. So a nice 120 dollar fishing rod would still be around 120 as all of the income taxes baked into the retail price are exchanged for the Fair tax.

All but five states have an income tax based on the national income tax. They throw in their variations just because their tax people need to justify their own existence.

But you are still collecting, and more important, doing all of the accounting, paper-work and long term legal exposure for an income tax.

Presently Floor and Décor (I go there for work) has accounting to pay employees and collect income taxes as well as accounting to collect and pay sales taxes.
I would venture that there would be a savings to having just a simple department to pay workers and a more complex department (that already exist) to collect taxes.

Well first we'd have to resolve partisan judges and the DOJ. Then we have to fix (unpower) Federal judges from striking down executive orders and also referendums, etc. as that amounts to giving judges executive powers -- see Hawaiian Judges. One judge makes law for the whole USA?

Against this backdrop, our coequal branches will be surprised to learn that the rule they thought long settled, and which remained unchallenged for half a century, is one that, according to the majority and the concurrence, my dissent just announced today. What does one mean by "faces"?

For example, a friend, when they had the manufactured home put in on a lake property, the on-site crew oriented it such where it "faced" the road and my friends caught the error and had it "facing" the lake.

Their neighbor similarly has a home oriented between the road and the lake and they don't even have a "front door", the road/visitor access is through a door opening to the car port where the delivery folks must wander through yard tools and potted plants to drop something at a door.

They might focus more on Congress but they have always been there.

Chris Murphy kind of gave the game away on Twitter after the decision. He complained that gutting Fischer was horrible because Congress routinely passed laws that were intentionally open ended so the bureaucracy could make the final interpretation on how things should work.

They outsourced their jobs because they could not get the legislation they wanted through Congress. That's how it's been going in DC for decades. Congress passes a broad and open ended piece of legislation and leaves it up to bureaucrats to apply their "expertise" to screw the American people. Completely without any oversight or consequences.

Yea, some will still try to screw us but they will have a much tougher road if they have to actually follow the Constitution and do their damn jobs.

I doubt the existing regulations are going anywhere. Unless someone's willing to fork over time, money and resources to litigate them.

Better to just start ignoring them and make the bureaucrats that want to enforce them spend that time, money and resources.

264 The Dem convention can do nothing - Dems are going to name their nominee in about 3 weeks on some kind of big zoom call of delegates. They are doing this because of the Ohio ballot laws. Once that is done, the nominee is locked in.
And they waited to long - the nominee now has to be either Biden or Kamala. There’s no other viable candidates with consensus support.

The people running the party will weigh their choices. If they think they can run the cheat again (and they can), then Stinkfinger runs another basement campaign. If they decide he's a dead loss, they toss him for someone else; possibly, but not necessarily, Mooch.

Sure, the delegates will howl, but fuck them. They'll be told, "do you love Biden more than you hate Trump? Then shut the fuck up and get in line!"

It really is that simple.

I don't disagree but 40% is a landslide loss not a win.

I get the cynicism but what is going on right now is not something the left can cover up or control. Look at the Sunday shows today, it's all about should Joe drop out. And these are Democrats talking to Democrats.

The NYT, the AJC and the Chicago Tribune are all calling for Joe to drop out and the convention is in Chicago. Dropping out now is unheard of and yet that is exactly what they are calling for him to do. They can see the handwriting and they are well aware of Democrats ability to cheat and rig elections. They are in full meltdown.

286 I'm fascinated by what is going on with the debate fallout. Those of us on the right are just watching this with a dafuq? expression on our faces.

Looking at the timeline, clearly some kind of coup/op was just run against Biden. What is weird is trying to figure out who is behind it?

On the ONT last night I mentioned that the media is more tightly aligned with the deep state than with the Democrats, and there is clearly a massive rift in play between media and the DNC happening.

First we have the run up to the debate. The scheduling and format were very weird. We all thought it was a set up to get Trump. But the situation put tremendous pressure on Biden. He had to perform in a way that he was clearly not going to be able to, to succeed. The split screen format, the long periods where Biden would have to talk uninterrupted, no audience. These were all conditions the media imposed. Tapper wasn't throwing Biden lifelines during the debate.

In the end, Biden had to clear a pretty high bar (for him) to come out of the debate successful.

So then what happens before/since the debate?

292 1) On the morning of the debate, Axios drops an article about how Michele Obama hates the Bidens, and that one of her best friends in Hunter Biden's first wife. The woman he left for his brother's widow.

2) During the debate, 30 minutes into it, the NY Times posts that there are panicked phone calls going on with Democrat leadership and donors about Biden's performance.

3) After the debate, John King, who has the highest reputation at CNN, leads off with how his phone is lit up with people talking about how they have to dump Biden.

4) Chris Wallace declares Biden's campaign to be over.

5) Politico headline "Biden is Toast"

6) The next day, NY Times editorial calls for Biden to step down for the good of the country.

7) Axios begins to publish the truth about the Biden administration. They admit to the sundowning, saying he is only cogent from 10-4.

Axios and other outlets are openly calling it an "Oligarchy" that is running the country, made up of long term Biden supporters.

It is media open season on the Biden campaign. But then look at the Democrat side of the situation.

299 At first many of us (including me) thought this was being run by Obama, maybe even Michele. But the next day, Obama makes his statement that Biden is the nominee and that won't change. Bill Clinton follows up with something similar.

And they are right. The logistics of replacing Biden right now, even if Biden were to withdraw, are disastrous. They purposely locked everyone out of the primaries, so Biden has all the pledged delegates. They have to vote for Biden on the first ballot. Biden gets the nomination no matter what.

Also, the time to get on the ballot in Wisconsin and Nevada are now past. If they replace Biden, then those two states will go to Trump by default.

This means Biden can't get to 270, since his only path is to sweep Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.

Ballot access is freaking hard, and it takes months of party work to get through maze of all the states. RFK has been "running" for a year, and has only gotten on the ballot of 6 states.

The Democrats know that this is impossible, and replacing Biden can't be done.

Yet the media is continuing to attack Biden and haven't stopped.

323 >> I don't know Jack. If kamala is as unintelligent as she appears, obama could control her as well.

She can't win. I know there are some here who think the left's ability to cheat is unlimited but I don't agree.

I've said all along they need to have a candidate who is at least plausible in order for the cheat to work. That's why they hid Biden in 2020 and for most of his presidency and made up narratives for him. If they could install anyone they wanted we wouldn't even be having this conversation, they would just ram Joe through.

Trump never led in the RCP average of polls in 2020. He's been leading almost without exception this cycle for months and after Thursday his lead is going up. I don't know that there is any big conspiracy about media. Go back a few days, many here thought Trump blew the election by agreeing to debate Joe on CNN. Instead the world got to see what we have been saying for years, Joe is done. The media has torched their credibility by lying about Joe and now they are scrambling to save what little they have left.

This genie is not going back in the bottle.

Both my wife and I spent some time working in an assisted living facility with dementia patients. Females were not a problem but many males with dementia had to get asked to leave because of extreme aggression.

It's an interesting theory. No newsroom is going to make any money buried under 20 feet of rubble.

325 I agree with Jack (I usually do).

Obama is clearly pulling the strings now, and he is the one calming the donors and trying to get everyone back in line.

Kamala's best play is to keep the VP roll, win the election, then take over next year when Obama tosses Bideon out. She would play along, because Obama would have gotten her into the position.

Much bigger risk for her to go up against Trump herself.

Also why I've never bought into the Michele running idea. I think Obama can better control Biden/Harris than he can control Michele.

Trump needs to focus on the fact that Joe needs to be injected to participate in what is going on around him.

332 You can speculate that newsrooms in the US are also concerned about the monsters they have created internally. Have they allowed the unprofessional crybabies they employ too much power? Look at what is happening at wapo, their own news people torched the new editor into turning down the position offered to him. The media has created Frankensteins that they employ. Could some of this be a way to reset the msm, spearheaded by the few journalists that have a clue that they are destroying their livlihood? Posted by: bluebell at June 30, 2024 11:24 AM (bS+DD)

379 Hey Bluebell!

If Biden were to die, between now and the election, it is possible to replace him on ballots.

I'm pretty sure that means he is replaced by the VP candidate though, they can't just replace with anyone, once Biden/Harris got enough pledged delegates.

Beyond that, it is a total mess and the practical effect is that the Democrats would have a real change of not having their candidate on specific state ballots.

I keep coming back to Wisconsin. The deadline is past, they can not replace Biden on that ballot, legally, unless Biden dies.

Does anyone have a scenario where the Democrats get to 270 without Wisconsin?

Posted by: Dave in Fla at June 30, 2024 11:24 AM (5p7BC)

380 Dave since know one knows what's going to happen it's a moot at this point. If the spud decides to withdraw for the good of the party I'd say brokered convention ala lbj.

399 neverenough - I'm not sure what would happen at all. I don't think they do as well.

The brokered convention idea is also crazy for a number of reasons. I'm not sure Biden can release his delegates without them having to vote for Harris on the first round.

Also pushing their convention into late August puts them past the deadlines for a number of states. It becomes not just Wisconsin and Nevada that they can't get their candidate on the ballot.

My guess is their only options are:

1) Ride the Biden train to a landslide loss

2) Biden pulls out, make Harris the nominee NOW and try to get Wisconsin to emergency change their laws, and hope none of the other lawsuits work to keep her off the ballot elsewhere

3) Go ahead and blow it up, put in a sacrificial lamb, and ride to a landslide loss where they aren't even on a dozen state ballots.

But who knows, this is all very murky and the laws are different for every state.

I think this probably raises the odd of immediate incarceration for Trump on July 12th to close to 100%

402 Lara Trump just made a great point: PDJT is broadcasting a message loud and clear to our foreign adversaries, saying "Do not try taking advantage of Biden's weakness, because his decline is not America's decline", and Lara makes clear that PDJT will react as soon as he is in office.

He is trying to lead even now.

403 Thanks, everyone, for this fascinating discussion. I guess we just wait and see. I am very glad it is the Dems who have to figure all this out, and not our side. It's must-see tv for sure.

It's what they do.

405 "I think this probably raises the odd of immediate incarceration for Trump on July 12th to close to 100%"

Absolutely.

I'm sure he is planning on that.

I just hope his ego doesn't push him over the line into martyrdom.

We are depending on him, big time. I really don't see any other way forward for the country without him.

That is scary.

You leaving?

410 I think Trump's best line from the debate was when he said he wished Biden was a better president, then he would be retired playing golf.

411 I know Dave is here! And he answered my questions, which was very kind of him. I have lots more, unrelated to the discussion here and more related to election night returns, but I'm not going to push my luck today, lol!

413 LOL Bluebell.

I am going to be very cautious on any predictions this year. Just look at what happened in the last 96 hours?

Who could have predicted that?

This is what makes me suspicious. Everyone, including the Dems, already knew that Joe was completely gone, mentally. Did they really think they could get him through a 90-minute debate and no one would notice that? I can't imagine they are that delusional.

So, why did they do it? So they can push him out? If so, why not have done something a lot earlier when it wouldn't wreak such havoc for the convention and already-determined ballots? There has to be something they've got up their sleeve, but what is it?

I didn't use to be so conspiracy-minded, but after the last 8 years, I have a whole wardrobe of tin-foil hats, one for each outfit.

417 If it's Tulsi or Nikki, I say Tulsi. She loves America and is not a war pig. She seems genuinely turned off at what the Dems have become.

418 "If it's Tulsi or Nikki, I say Tulsi."

I tend to agree with your choice, and your reason.

I see pundits bring up Nikki's name a lot.

Just not here in her home state.

We pretty much despise her.

423 "There has to be something they've got up their sleeve, but what is it?"

I think the mistake is thinking "they" when considering all of this.

I don't think it is a singular faction with a singular goal. There are at least 2 factions and right now they are at war. The DNC and the media are tearing into each other, and I don't think it is theater.

Posted by: Dave in Fla at June 30, 2024 12:08 PM (5p7BC)

424 I saw Tulsi interviewed by Tucker and she explained why Hawaii is overwhelming Dem. It made sense that she would come out of that environment as a Democrat. But she did not like what she saw of their leadership.

Posted by: Notsothoreau at June 30, 2024 12:08 PM (xjTDL)

425 And the media thing is odd. Are they pissed that they did as told and covered for Joe? They've lost more credibility

427 One last comment I meant to make. Spent time with a former SC state senator. He spent a lot of time working with Haley when he was in office and after. He gave her glowing remarks. Is she my first choice, no, could probably get behind her if she brought in moderate women voters.

She seems to be a little overwrought. She was babbling on about total nuclear war and "nuclear winter", which has been discredited, by the way. And sheesh, if you're going to make a video in an attempt to sway people, shoot it with a real camera, not friggin' phone! She's that Biden is insane, but the presentation is laughably bad.

432 Re: data centers in space
One of the chief concerns in spacecraft is heat dissipation. Data centers produce loads of heat, and there will be no easy way to cool them.
