Looks to me like that fox is filling out with good food and play. There was a domestication experiment in Russia, I think, where they took gray foxes, allowed the most easygoing ones to breed, and in an astonishingly short time -- three generations, maybe? -- they had domesticated foxes that were as companionable and trainable as dogs. This is a red fox, but the qualities must be in there somewhere.

Back to the homeless thread. I noticed an underpass here near the U of A changed its landscaping. It used to be smooth dirt and there were a number of people living there. They changed it to medium sized rocks ('cause that's only kind of landscaping around here - rocks everywhere). And so there's no longer flat places to sleep.

Miss Linda said the cat looked at the opossum, the opossum eyed the cat, and then they turned and went their separate ways. Wolf was a healthy eater and good hunter. If he didn't go after that marsupial, it was because he didn't think it was worth the attempt. "Eat that? Hell no." And opossums are as big as your average cat. Maybe they don't seem like prey. Saw a fox other morning out in a field not far from me
Posted by: Skip at July 05, 2024 *** I used to see them frequently in Denver. They ran in and out of the enclosures at the zoo, for instance. And one chilly morning I drove up to work out at Red Rocks Park in the western suburbs. A red fox was sitting on the far side of the narrow road. I pulled over and watched him. He seemed utterly unconcerned that my car was there, and sat, peering intently around. Then he wheeled and trotted off on his fox business. This morning I saw two of those yellow-crested herons that have been around here lately. One was on a lawn. The other was standing on the side of the main street through the complex. I blipped the horn at him, which chases most animals, especially birds. He didn't move. I drove carefully past him, and could still see him, unmoving, in the driver's side mirror.

Yes, dealing with a sick wild animal is never a good idea -- either sick or injured, as in the latter case they will be in pain. The young heron that Miss Linda saw staring balefully at her outside her condo a week or so ago had a wild dinosaur-ish vibe, probably sick, and she carefully left it alone. A day or two later she saw its body on the grass. She still left it for the grounds people to cart away.

Glacier View, Alaska celebrated the Fourth of July by launching cars off a cliff while blasting "God Bless the U.S.A."
The event is an annual tradition that started in 2005 with tickets now costing $20. Most years, about 6 vehicles are launched off the cliff however reports say they had about a dozen for this year's celebration. Vehicles take off from one of two runways: One has a monorail and the other is freewheeling. Most cars are launched with a piece of wood wedged against the gas pedal. One summer morning a couple of years ago I went out with a mug of coffee to inspect the roof work we were having done. A fox came up to me as close as a neighbor's dog might. Sort of, Hello, do I know you? I said Hello back. He went into the front gardens--so actually between me and the house--and wandered back and forth, looking up frequently as though to say Hi, finally came close to say good-bye and left for the back meadow.
The foreman of our job had arrived by that time. I went to his pickup and said, Is that common? He said, Never seen it before in my life. Posted by: Wenda at July 05, 2024 06:06 PM (4GhzG) 136

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at July 05, 2024 05:38 PM (omVj0) Somewhat sociable. I just now watched Old Joe's Wisconsin performance on utoob. He is not who he was even six months ago. He is now deeply wedded to the prompter. He looks a long time at one screen before he shifts to the other. Occasionally he looks directly into the camera and says a brief sentence; I have little doubt TPOTUS tells him to do it hoping he can remember the brief sentence. He lapses into the mouth agape, not-all-there look during brief pauses, when TPOTUS likely tells him to pause for applause and cheering. His now only 5-10 minute speeches are nothing but a recital of "15 million jobs, biggest climate bill in the history or the world, yada, yada" and increasingly nasty personal attacks on Trump. Sad and frightening.
Will Steffy help or torpedo Joe tonight? He can torpedo Joe with out much difficulty, if his masters the Clintons and/or the DNC honchos tell him to. Posted by: Gref at July 05, 2024 06:25 PM (5fDan) 196
