46 On vacation some of the melons started to spoil, so I chucked them off the side of a cliff out west. Figured the lizards or chipmunks would have a feast. It wasn't about 10 minutes or so before a pair of Ravens flew right in, couldn't see anything because cliff, but they seemed to enjoy that very much. I swear they said "thank you" in their squawk language when they flew away, lol. They would usually come flying in parallel to the cliff face running for miles right at sunset and float on the thermals. Just sort of twisting and playing together while they fly off into the night.

But when I played HS football and finished up summer 2-a-day practices in sweltering 90+ degree heat, the parent/boosters had packed melons in ice for over 24 hrs and gave it out as we walked off the field, still in pads, from our last practice of the summer.

121 I can't stomach the smell of cantelope. Don't like the flavor either.
Love watermelon. Can enjoy some honeydew melon. I like any melon very cold.

Story time! When I was a kid my grandparents had a cellar. Every year they hosted the family reunion. The night before the reunion, Grandpa would take bags of ice down into the cellar and dump them in an old wash tub. Then he would bury two big watermelons and a couple of cantelope in the ice. It stayed there until we kids started begging for watermelon. It was so cold, that first bite was painful! August in southern Indiana is hot and that melon was perfect.

124 Watermelon was probably kind of a legacy thing. Remember, refrigeration wasn't invented till about 1910, at least on any widespread scale.

If you were lucky, they had an Ice House in your town. For 6 months you roasted, and bought huge blocks of ice to keep shit sorta kinda cold, sometimes. My dad swore ice cold milk was the greatest thing ever, when home refrigerators became widespread. Before that, it was always kinda warm-ish.

Ice cream and watermelon were two things that could be accomplished to try and have a respite from 90 degree 90 per cent humidity days. Stow them bad boys in the Ice House for a day or two, set up a row of tables and maybe, cool down for a few hours. Most people slept outside in the summer months, even in big cities like New York city. Right on the fire escapes, and in the parks, whereever they could get out of the heat.

Yup! Watermelon was an inexpensive way to get a bunch of people cooled down in the summer. My dad humped block ice in the summer to keep in shape for the football season in high school. Lots of people had refrigerators by then, but they were expensive. Po' folks bought ice for many years, especially living in apartments or tenements.

You can make really good chocolate syrup with cocoa powder, granulated sugar, and salt. Water based. It will totally blow away the Hershey's stuff, no thickeners or artificial sweeteners. Trust Me.

Heath bar pieces used to be pretty good in ice cream. I like Malts - mix in some Malted Milk powder - a lot of powder - with good ice cream. Fresh ground nutmeg from those pods and it is really fantastic.
