So is the media. At last count there are 6 major newspapers that have called for Joe to drop out including the NY and the Chicago Tribune where the DNC will be next month. There are numerous reporters from papers like the WaPo and NYT tweeting out that they are shocked, Shocked!, to learn Joe is senile. This is a coordinated hit. Nobody is stuffing the ballot box for Joe this year and Harris is polling worse. They are going to need a new trick this year and somehow the race is going to have to get a lot closer than it is now. 68 >>Poll are public. Ballot stuffing is not.
Happy Fourth, folken! It's hot here, but the sky is overcast, and we might get some showers. This is all to the good for me, of course; not much fun for people wanting to play outdoors.
My morning was occupied with buying a window unit A/C. The central unit in my apartment is refusing to cool below 75 with the outside temp about the same, so -- until the apartment mismanagement imbeciles are back in the office, maybe tomorrow, maybe Monday -- I took action. Home Depot had a bunch of nice units for about $300. (For those who suggested a portable, I decided I couldn't be sure about the drainage method.) With some help from Miss Linda, I got the A/C installed in the living room window. It's cooling well. The circular shop fan I also bought draws air into the bedroom for sleeping. All set for now. He was not a religious person, and both songs he said he wanted at any memorial were from musicals--the other was Sunrise, Sunset. When we would watch the movie, he always choked up at Mama Look Sharp, not only because he was a proud American and proud Yankee, but because I think he always felt like his mom didn't love him. She performatively "loved" ALL her kids (for pictures, events, in the Christmas letter), but constantly compared (whoever wasn't present was always better than whoever was in front of her), and IMO misinterpreted always trying to do your best each time to mean that nothing was ever good enough. What is the first thing authoritarians do when they get power? They consolidate it. They shut down opposition, and they staff institutions with loyalists beholden to them instead of the nation. That's step 1 and Trump has already promised all of this. It gets worse from there. Scott Adams @ScottAdamsSays 7h Reducing the role of the federal government is the opposite of fascism. It transfers power to the states. No Republicans see the scary movie Democrats are watching. None of the media’s fear propaganda is reality based. No, there was not an insurrection on January 6th. Trump was never charged with insurrection. It was a protest to delay certification, pending an audit on some suspicious looking results. (In their opinion.) The so-called “fake electors” were to establish a legal standing should it go to the courts. No one was going to hand over the country to them. The brainwashers told you Republicans stage coups without guns. Trust me, they didn’t. You can’t conquer a country by trespassing. And Republicans don’t put their leaders above the Constitution. That would be the opposite of their whole deal. The “dictator” narrative is an assigned opinion from the brainwashers. It isn’t a risk in the real world. Honestly, the film "1776" is arguably the best musical for those who don't like musicals. As pointed out above, the actors are amazingly good, and the story is compelling. Watching it allows you to see just how complicated the decision to create America was, and the gravity of the choice for independence.

Trump was never charged with insurrection. It was a protest to delay certification, pending an audit on some suspicious looking results. (In their opinion.)

I always wondered about that, especially in the winter. Furnace goes out. Would make a great commercial. The couple is sitting on the couch. They can see their breath, wearing parkas and gloves while they compare notes. "Do we want a heat pump, or not, do you think?" "If we can stick it out another 42 days, Lowe's is having a sale, it looks like."
Never fun to make a major ticket item purchase (for most people) under pressure, that's for sure. Posted by: Common Tater at July 04, 2024 04:46 PM (r8+qN) 176

I missed the post featuring Liberace. Boy, they were incapable of shame in the 1970s. It's weird that in the 70s I was mercilessly bullied for wearing crew socks instead of knee socks. (My parents couldn't afford to replace items in my wardrobe just because somebody was hassling me over it.)
But crew socks instead of knee socks made me a social outcast, yet look at what the TV people were wearing! Posted by: Emmie at July 04, 2024 04:46 PM (Sf2cq) 178

Well, Junior got about 90 minutes into Lincoln until he decided that he needed a break to go outside and play for a few hours.
I knew his attention was flagging and kept trying to keep him engaged with making sure he understood what was going on. It helped a bit, but he is a 10 year old boy with ADHD. 'That's quite an illogical conclusion. Pootin has wanted "a way out" of the war for about 3 years.' Nope. Here's my logic. Putin could end the war today without Trump's help in a number of ways. 1) Pull out and say he thinks Ukraine learned its lesson.(Unlikely but he could do it). 2)Not pull out and announce generous peace terms (i.e. keep conquered land only if a referendum in them supports it. It would, the occupied places are full of ethnic Russians). 3) Have his side get their shit together and at least capture Kiev and impose a government. (I'm still surprised they didn't accomplish that. Putin can't like how weak that makes Russia look.) Posted by: Dr. Claw at July 04, 2024 05:07 PM (3wi/L) 208
I don't mind musicals. Hell, I played Nathan Detroit in Guys and Dolls in high school, and will always love the songs and lyrics from that. But som many of the ones I'm acquainted with do not have songs that send you out of the theatre humming the tunes, or even one major song.
That said, the movie musicals Cabaret and Saturday Night Fever, and the songs intertwined in Elvis's King Creole, make sense. All three are dramas rather than comedies, and all three have their songs limited to actual music venues rather than, say, the middle of a street. And Travolta's Tony does not sing, he dances.
