Good Morning Kids. Here's a real howler to get things started, Alvin Bragg, who literally rewrote law to basically fabricate a 34-count writ of attainder to persecute by prosecution Donald Trump did this:

MANHATTAN—The Manhattan district attorney's office, led by anti-Trump prosecutor Alvin Bragg, dismissed trespassing charges against 30 Columbia University protesters who were arrested for occupying a campus building.
The Washington Free Beacon attended the Thursday afternoon proceedings at the Manhattan Criminal Courthouse. A trove of students and their supporters, many of whom used face masks and keffiyehs to cover their faces, streamed into the building just before 3 p.m., the Free Beacon observed. inside the courtroom—where audio and video recording is not allowed—a prosecutor in Bragg's office argued that the defendants should not face criminal penalties, citing their lack of criminal histories and arguing that the protesters will face internal discipline at Columbia.
The prosecutor also argued that Bragg's office lacked evidence to land convictions in the cases, given those who occupied Hamilton Hall wore masks and covered up surveillance cameras. New York City police arrested the occupiers while they were inside Hamilton Hall. . .
. . . Once their cases were dismissed, protesters headed outside to hold a defiant press conference. One speaker, whose entire head was covered with a ski mask, said the protesters "resist the pigs, the police in the U.S."

It's not just about replacing the American people with a compliant mass of voters and supporters it's about erasing the collective memory of those still left so future generations cannot rise up and rebel:

The surge of interest in homeschooling since the pandemic is a blessedly welcome development for society, but it has brought with it increased suspicion and scrutiny from the current Powers That Be. Leftwing ideologues have been working on capturing the culture, especially education, for over half a century, ever since they abandoned marching in the streets to make the Long March through the institutions. Homeschooling is a deeply serious threat to the Left’s totalitarian lust for power, and that is why Scientific American, the nation’s leading mainstream science magazine, recently added its voice to the call that homeschooling parents be “regulated.”
. . . The Scientific American op-ed claims that studies which show equal or higher levels of academic achievement among homeschooled students are often “methodologically flawed” – in other words, they produce results that are embarrassing to the establishment. The editors quickly go on to fear-monger about the risk of “horrific abuse” children are exposed to from homeschooling parents; in fact, they’re actually at much greater risk of bullying, violence, and abuse in the Thunderdomes of today’s public schools – not to mention school shootings. The op-ed even warns that some homeschool curricula “extol the virtues of Nazism.” The “Nazi” smear is a sure sign that the aim of this op-ed is to not to ensure the welfare of homeschooled children but to demonize their parents – who tend to (but not always) lean conservative – as A Threat to Democracy™.
. . . Scientific American editors also complain that parents “are not required to have an education themselves to direct instruction.” In response, I would argue three points: one, that there are plenty of video examples online of barely literate, foul-mouthed teachers who don’t know their dangling participle from their XY chromosome; two, that what “educators” are mostly trained to teach today are Critical Race Theory, gender ideology, and anti-Americanism; and three, no one is more passionately committed to give their children a solid education than parents. Countless fathers and mothers (not “birthing parents” who homeschool have simply taken the leap and committed to educating themselves and then their children. It’s demanding but it’s working, and that’s a “meaningful education” for the whole family.
Those same countless parents across the nation are wised up to, and fed up with, the politicized public education system and its obsession with drag queens, pride flags, transgender indoctrination, personal pronouns, and Critical Race Theory racism. They are sick of the Left’s mission to drive a wedge between them and their kids in order to transfer children’s trust and allegiance to the State.
The upshot is this: the aim of the neo-Marxist Left is to break down the family unit by de-legitimizing parents’ legal and moral right to determine how their own children are raised. The Left wants to take your children and grandchildren and raise them as loyal, dependent subjects of the atheistic State, disconnected from their own history and culture, and devoid of critical thinking skills, intellectual independence, or a spiritual dimension. This is no conspiracy theory; the evidence for it comes directly from the horse’s mouth, with many so-called “educators” proudly proclaiming on social media that they consider themselves activists and revolutionaries out to dismantle or smash every social norm. “I’m your parent now,” they openly tell the schoolchildren in their charge.

Thank you. An old dog, at least you have memories of their youth and energy to comfort you. But to lose, and so suddenly, a seven-month old puppy with its life ahead of it is very hard.

Spark's siblings Phoenix, George and Puff will be going to Texas A&M in a week to participate in a heart study and will be tested. We also urged Zeus's owners to have him tested as well.

The family members of those officials might be targeted as well. And arresting the people responsible might have others thinking "They can only arrest me for the first one and every other one is free."

(Disclaimer: I do NOT want this to happen in my country. I want the rule of law restored and I want criminals too scared to bother normal people. But I'm smart enough to notice that things are getting bad.)

Preferably not. Totalitarianism is hard and requires a lot of delegation. Intact families dependent on the state where parents live in fear and keep the next generation in line is an almost ideal management system. Having to take it over directly - direct provisioning of child care, direct operation of orphanages, etc. - doesn't scale well.

Better to cow the parents, make them dependent, and handle only the schools and clubs. Much more efficient and scalable.

Since you brought it up, I have a question for any who choose to answer it.

Are gift cards actually any good, as a category? I've never seen the point in a gift card, because it's money but it's non-general money. There's a middle-man and restrained use. When I give a gift, I never consider giving a gift card. I give an actual present, or I just give cash. If the gift is going to be money, I don't see the point of giving restricted pseudo-money.

But then something like Fen's comment makes me think that a gift card, rather than cash, might encourage the recipient to try something new but still of his own choice. I can sort of see that. But I still lean toward straight cash.

Regarding homeschooling… my spiritual mentor in college (the teacher of the college age Sunday school class I attended) was an attorney in Iowa.

I don’t know the whole history but apparently back in the 80s Iowa state government was hostile to homeschoolers… might’ve even arrested a few. I’m foggy on the details…. But this attorney provided pro bono legal aid and as a result at some point in the 80s homeschooling became legal in Iowa with few (if any) restrictions/regulation. He was writing a history of the entire saga a few years ago but sadly never finished it

It can be a thoughtful gift if you know that a person likes to frequent a particular restaurant or business, but you don't know what they like specifically. For instance, in my office, we chipped in a bought my boss a gift card to a popcorn store because we all know he loves popcorn. I've received gift cards for Domino's Pizza, because they know I like it.

In other words, it's sort of like treating someone to a free lunch, but without all the hassle of taking them there yourself.

I have a relative who the doctor's discovered had cancer disseminated throughout her body age 13!And had to go on chemo

Not a great thing obviously.

But, she had family and friends who supported her throughout her chemo treatment for over the next 13 years And she graduated both high school doing all the normal hS stuff when not on chemo and normal college stuff (sorority, etc)when not on chemo and became a high paid specialty nurse, until she was declared clear of cancer

A great thing.

She married her college sweet heart but was told she would never have children because of all her years in chemo. But then she had a totally unexpected miracle pregnancy with the birth a totally normal beautiful baby boy.

Another great thing!!!

Buuuut, two years later her husband divorced her because...well...he hadn't signed up to be a father when he married her.

Obviously, not a great thing.

But, she's got close-by family to help with her kiddo and has advanced in her career. And has started dating again.

Another great thing.

How's Allstate's portfolio holding up? How's the balance sheet looking? Insurance companies depend on premiums, of course, but insurance companies are also - perhaps even primarily - gigantic banks and investment houses. Staggering losses usually involve that side of the business. If not for the investments, nobody could afford insurance and if they go sideways, it gets bad quick.

I've waited tables in my past and was making a car payment a weekend because of tipping. Provide good service and the customer will respond in kind.

Yeah, if today's media is good at anything, it is interrupting conservatives before they can make their point, and replacing their point with the Dem talking point.

With the old Crossfire it used to be like three on one, like a pack of barking dogs, to make sure no conservative point could be made to its conclusion.

The Founding Fathers made a horrible document called the Constitution and developed a slaveholding, racist society precisely because they could not benefit from a quality public school education. You are also a liar. The Department of Education has made a quality public school education MORE quality.

People like you are stupid and have no business, ever, criticizing our amazing public schools. Unless you have taught school, you should be arrested for criticizing teachers.

Complacency such as yours lead to the deaths of thousands, such as with Pearl Harbor. I’d prefer things be nipped in the bud with the use of DIME rather than just breezily waiting for the PRC to invade and face a “citizen-soldier” army, thanks.

The 2A is about much more. Self defense for those far from the authorities (such as settlers of the West or people like me who live in the sticks far from the cops.). And it is a failsafe device. As I once heard in a class, “an insurgent amendment for insurgents by insurgents.”
