65 I like the mood of this. Vernet, a Frenchman, seems to be painting something personal. The hopes and promises of the resurrected Empire dashed. The pose of the soldier recalls the Durer work "Melancholia": https://shorturl.at/y2ELO. His weapons are scattered around and his uniform are torn and bloodied. To me, this represents the destruction of France's strength.

I don't think the cross has any religious significance. It think it is a grave marker. I also think that's a sunset in the background. These fit with the overall mood. The power of France died at Waterloo.

Got a bud that's 24 year retired from the Corps. He's been out for almost a decade and is just now coming to grips with everything he's locked away over the years. Found out the hard way he's got cannabis induced psychosis or some such. He was using weed for pain management then would have horrific flashbacks. Once he learned all that, therapy worked wonders for him. He's a LOT better now. And no more weed.

112 So much for the 'glory' of battle. A dejected, wounded, hobbling survivor surrounded by a no-man's landscape. His now useless discarded armor in the mud along with the dead in the background. A stormy sky putting everything in shadow except the light of a new day. The dark earth tones are reflected in the dark sky. The realism of the soldier and the ground around him focuses the viewers attention on the subject. Then the background details start to come through completing the feel of the painting. It is a powerful image.

140 The Last Grenadier of Waterloo
Horace Vernet

The same soldier, same landscape, but a different position and in different tones are featured in:

Norton Simon (Museum) Org
A Soldier on the Field of Battle, 1818
Horace Vernet (French, 1789-1863)

A wounded grenadier of Napoleon’s Imperial Guard has just buried his fallen comrades in the aftermath of the Battle of Waterloo (1815). Beneath him, the hands and head of a slain soldier protrude from the bloodied soil. In the tradition of Romanticist painting, the solitary figure sits in a ruined landscape, absorbed by his melancholic thoughts. His inner grief is amplified by the turbulent sky, as the setting sun casts its last rays of light over the carnage.

Painted three years after the infamous battle that it depicts, this work garnered great sympathy and praise at the Paris Salon of 1819. Its success spurred Horace Vernet to produce three versions of the painting, one of which was purchased by the duc d’Orléans, the future king of France.

Also, Nov. '23, Apollo International Art Magazine wrote, "The Palace of Versailles houses the world’s largest collection of paintings by the artist Horace Vernet ..."

Thanks

In the first case I believe it was because artillery wasn't especially accurate and you were as safe in formation as out of it.

In the second case it was because generals grew up before machine guns and weren't actually leading the battles.

Okay. So I'm a racist. I live in a nice, quiet neighborhood. You know who else lives there? Civilized people. You know what it isn't? A white christofascist ethnohood. I, believe it or not, have Asian, black and Latino neighbors. Shocking, I know. You may not believe me, but I promise it's true. The richer neighborhood around the corner is, amazingly, demographically identical. Staggering, innit? The poorer neighborhood in the other direction is - sit down for this, because it might bowl you over - the same! All three neighborhoods are quiet, peaceful and extremely low-crime.

The defining characteristic, however, is that we're all civilized.

That's why they had religious cleansing rituals after ancient battles. It was a tool trying to prevent PTSD.

Boston, for example, has an Asian incompetent running things.

you can always tell who was actually poor and who's just an Ivy League shitlib LARPing because the latter romanticizes aspects of poverty that real poor people desperately want to escape.

when they think "noisy neighborhood," their mind conjures up some abuela playing tropipop out her breezy open window while she makes empanadas as a table of Chinese men laugh and play Mahjong on the street -- literal Hollywood movie shit.

in reality, the noise of poverty is the woman next door screaming while she's getting beaten up by her drunk boyfriend, a schizo man shouting obscenities outside of your apartment window, and the blaring siren of ambulances coming to collect yet another overdose.

230 JD Vance is dangerous to everyone - including TFG. He is a mini-TFG. He will use anyone for his personal profit. He is telegenic, a quick talker and comes off as well-informed. He is a veteran, graduated Yale Law school, worked with republican politicians, worked with Peter Thiel as a venture capitalist. He is smart and dangerous.

He is using TFG and I don’t think TFG knows it. Vance is running for president, and unlike Pence, he has the brains to work around TFG to run the show.

Your points are spot on. As Trump continues to fall apart, beware the dark horse a desperate GOP could well end up running.

all VP candidates are using him. They’ve made the calculation he’ll likely suffer some mental or physical breakdown while in office and they will become president.

unlike the other sycophants, Vance will exert real power. TFG may be the face, but his cognitive decline opens a door that Vance will walk through and TFG might not even recognize it. TFG will read his pile of news clippings while Vance powers through the policy initiatives.

Kevin Roberts of the diabolical Heritage Foundation recommended Vance to Trump.

Hell, a year or so back, I drove from here to Indianapolis for the NRA Annual Meetings. About 1,100 miles. And that's (roughly) about HALF the distance to New Jersey from here.

Make the drive. You can do it. And, you can bring your guns, your gear, and not have to obey the accursed TSA.

279 I recall a "professor" just spitting out the word "Meritocracy". She was enthused about recycled sweaters as a way to reduce plastic pollution. This was a long, long time ago. I pointed out that plastic is made with a catalytic or chemicals and don't necessarily lend themselves to being melted down and re-used. It isn't that simple.

Further discussions revealed that they were priced about $400 a piece, which I allowed was probably not going to work. The point here - "Meritocracy" - or evaluating people or employees based on proficiency and competence, what people can do, by the inversion of what people are.

People aren't interchangeable meat sticks to be plugged in, it doesn't work like that. It's a twisted philosophy and should be rejected but it is too loathsome to contemplate for most, so it is ignored. But ignoring it is no longer possible.

Carving out untouchables based on certain characteristics. Jerry in a Dress, well ya can't fire him no matter how much carnage he brings. Just transfer him somewhere else until they can't stand him any longer. It's a big shit sandwich, everybodys gotta take a bite.

282 I had to go in the high school in the fall to bring something to the girl spawn. it was lunch time. Out in the commons were a bunch of kids chilling out and chatting. I noticed the guys were on one side and the girls sitting across from them. Girls yapping and shifting around. Guys just chatting quietly and glancing over at the girls.
Two of the girls stood up to leave and I realized what was going on. Those skirts were short enough to be obscene!
My girl spawn arrived, dressed neatly in a pencil skirt with a tucked in blouse and a vest with black heels. While I was talking to her I saw several of the guys just outright turn their heads to check the girl spawn bottom line as she stood there.
Our girl is only 4'10" but she has a proportional hourglass figure that the tall thin girls do not have. She also left some to the imagination. The guys kept watching as she walked away then settled back to glancing occasionally at the short skirts.

They're from a different country. They don't know how this one works, what its people do for leisure, or anything about its inhabitants. We have no common background. I stick out like a sore thumb when I visit a foreign country, too. It's really no different in essence.

A good tractor will travel far, I guess. They used updated versions to haul aircraft around at a lot of the bases, too. I thought that was smart. We had to get certified to drive a tractor in the .mil! I think a lot of things are made under license now. To think that an old tractor from the 1920s made it all the way to the modern age without getting scrapped is pretty interesting.

As I've said to my wife a thousand times, to no avail, there is nothing sexier than a sundress.

348 The most disturbing thing about the Schumer grilling picture is the moobs.
Posted by: Muldoon at June 18, 2024 11:01 AM (uCfKO)

The grill actually looks used. Maybe 2 previous times. There's supposedly flames below the burgers, but it looks odd to me. Plus, no smoke whatsoever. And no flames near the 'cooked' hot dogs.

Everything they do is an op.

Another sign we are moving towards the Soviet Union structure of communist incompetence.

356 Cooking shots are among the most choreographed photography there is. In the old days, all the lights would melt ice cream, so they used mashed potatoes if you want a picture of a bowl of ice cream.

Grilling pictures are best done when the food is ready to eat, or somewhere well along the way to edible. I think it is more appetizing. Why though, are we arguing about grilling procedures when they are trying (apparently) to start WW III.x ? I mean, priorities I guess.

'Cause it's funny? I think it's funny.

The problem isn't the raw meat on the grill, it's that there's already cheese on it, pre-flip and no evidence for how the 'dogs were grilled. It's such an obvious incompetent fake that it's hilarious.

Thanks . You should send some of your work to MH to post on the hobby thread. I hear Instagram is going to allow stuff on their site to be used for AI.

I've never driven to Boston, but I have ridden the Gold Wing up there thrice in the early and mid '90s. And once, as far as Kennebunk, Maine. So yeah, it's a haul, for sure.

First trip, was straight from San Antonio, to Boston. Second trip, a bit of a detour via Chicago, for a Industry Convention. Third trip? A wee detour to Orlando, to visit the (then, still living Dad & Step Mom) for a weekend.

A New Horizon is always there in your windshield.
