Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

I'm not vouching for the figures here, but it's something to keep in mind:

Greetings All,

I know this thread is generally reserved for pets, but living out in the country we seem to get a lot of "pets" and I wouldn't have it any other way. Always look forward to this thread with excitement each week. Best wishes to all.

stella the o dog.jpg

This is Stella doing what she does. Sleeping at the front door waiting for me to come home.

Stella has been on the pet thread before. We took her in several years ago. My daughter brought her to me from the vet hospital where she worked. She had been dropped off to be euthanized by her owners. She was in good health. They just wanted rid of her so they could get a puppy, they said. They paid the fee and abandoned her there. For all they know she was dead before dark. The vet never told them any different. Instead of being euthanized, Stella has likely outlived the poor puppy.

I already had four dogs, two of them rescued. I told my daughter that no matter how many dogs you rescue, there will always be more than you can possibly help. Stella was nice but she couldn't stay. My daughter said she'd just leave Stella with me for a night because if she stayed where she was she would be dead tomorrow. Stella was ten years old then. She's almost sixteen now. So you can see who won that argument.

It was six months before I ever heard Stella bark. She never made a sound and hid a lot. I knew the signs. She's a sweet tempered doggy and completely devoted to me, once she came out of her shell. She's asleep under my desk at this moment. Nowadays she mostly sleeps. I've never seen her do a single bad thing. Not once.

She was having some skin issues and I took her to get some medicine for that. They looked her over and xrayed her. They found that she has BBs embedded in her skin. They also found that she has cancer.

She's not in pain. She eats well and gets aound ok even if she's not sprinting anywhere. The cancer may turn out to be a slow type. It may have been present for a while, in fact. I'm advised that trying to cut it out would be futile. We'll take it day by day. I know that a lot of pet thread readers are in the same situation. I've been through it. It's hard. I won't let Stella suffer. She's good for now. She found her home against all odds, even overcoming my reluctance. I'll give her every day she can get to enjoy it.

W

What a great story. Stella is a good dog. Thanks for taking care of her.

zoooeey.jpg

K. T.

About a year ago, when our 16-year old Yorkie went across the bridge, I
suggested to the missus that we consider a rescue dog for our next companion. She liked the idea, and within a short while found Zooey, a small terrier-chihuahua mix (best guess), found as a stray in Texas, as we were told. She was very stressed and fearful, and while we were told that she was about a year old, we think it was really closer to 6 months. My wife immediately bonded with her, and Zooey came home with us.

Its been about a year now, and Zooey has come a long way. Housebreaking
was a trial, and CHEW?!?? Before we knew it, she had chewed all of the
power cords under our adjustable bed. Even now, we are careful about
things like shoelaces and the like. We save up empty TP tubes for her to
use as chewtoys. It took a long time to get over the initial fearfulness
(it was a month before she made her first bark), and she is still
skittish and timid, but she is much better, and has developed her own
unique personality. Zooey loves to be outside, and likes to get two
walks per day. Its been a lot of work, but she is a GOOD dog.

For anyone looking for a new pet, I'd like to put in a word for the
rescue groups. Take your time and look carefully, of course, but there
are a lot of good pets out there that just need a good home and a little
extra care.

The Neon Madman

We have some good people in The Horde willing to be kind to pets who need a little extra care. Zooey is charming.

11 Dropping off your healthy pet to be euthanized reminds me of a story.

A married woman came to a obstetrician to get an abortion because she and her husband were planing to go to Europe in the Summer and didn't want to be pregnant during the trip.

That was when he stopped doing abortions.

12 I'll be sending in pictures of my neighbour's cats and kittens in a few weeks.

Two of the females got pregnant around the same time. One had 5 adorable kittens, the other 4 little furballs. I took care of them a few times after they started moving around. It was beautifully insane. I was never a cat person before but I love those cats.

We're in a farming community so the cats will be in other homes shortly but not before I get a chance to bring over one of the cute cashiers and her girlfriends over to see them. The girl loves cats. And I've done so much for the cats, it's nice they can give back!

Oh, and Trumpy was caught out in the rain. Beautiful cat. Fluffy as hell. I took a picture of him and he was glaring like President Trump's mugshot. I'll send that in in a little while.

13 People have suggested I send photos of Hissy Fit but honestly I'm still not happy looking at pictures.
I don't want a photo that doesn't explain the personality.

The New Cat is lonely and needs a friend. Hissy Fit hated her guts but was consistent, so Spatula Kitty has lost her anchor. People, etc don't really seek perfection they seek consistency and Hissy Fit was consistent in her hatred of Spatula Kitty right to the end.
We have two photos of them in a single frame neither of which lasted more than like 3 seconds.
I work in the Pet Department at the store and that gets upsetting sometimes at night alone over there.

20 Two weeks ago my sister begged me to take a mixed breed dog they've had to kennel and muzzle for 2 years. To those believing all animals can be saved, my opinion is this thing is a herding pit bull mix. Extremely territorial with the ankle nip escalated to a fixed bite.
It bit two people INSIDE their house at a laid back party. They have 3 children I told her I'd take it but simply shoot it inside the carrier.
There is such a thing as bad breeding.
Not the dogs fault but have some sense. I told her either kill it or I will.

21 Meanwhile, hubby is visiting his mom this weekend, so the cats have designed to grace me with their presence. They belonged to our late daughter - Paul wasn't thrilled with the idea of bringing them home, but they nudged their way into his heart. He's an old softie ♥️♥️♥️.

The mama cat insists upon lying next to him at night and getting pets whenever she wants - it's really quite cute. He pats the bed next to him and she hops up on the bed and lays down in her "spot". She's big, so I have to move over to make room for her. She lets me pet her, and she likes me, but it is quite obvious that hubs is "her" person of choice 😊

24 G'day hooray furry friends post. Great pix & stories as always. Thanks, K.T.

Walking with Daisy a couple of days ago, we got down to the West end, and she glommed up a good-size box turtle. Had a bit of a struggle getting her to drop it.

Shortly after that, near the shed, she suddenly starts snuffling the ground this way and that, then plunges into the high grass, emerging in a few moments with... another good-size box turtle. Again, had some struggle to get her to drop it, but she did.

Amazing nose on that Malinois. Hope I can discourage her from grabbing turtles before she meets a snapper!

29 Hot Pavement: Years ago, we stopped at a Whole Foods (we don't do that anymore) and, while MiladyJo shopped, I walked our dear old Gimli dog and we sat at the outdoor café area. Hot day. On the way over to the café, she was doing okay until her paws hit a metal manhole cover. Quite a yelp. She was careful (as was I) on the way back to avoid that. Scorcher torture.

30 Afternoon, folken of the pet world (and general animal too; we can leave out the deer and peacocks!). I woke up just now to find Stirling the black cat sleeping on one side of me, and Dagny the little gray Siberian on the other side. The first item is not unusual; the second is.

Rescue animals . . . Arizona the big red-and-white tabby was an SPCA special; Marie-Antoinette the smart black had been rescued in the French Quarter and passed on to Miss Linda; I rescued Angelique the blue-eyed Siberian in a parking lot; Annabelle the slim white cat was taken in by Linda after her people decamped for Katrina, and Wolf my giant black cat I adopted after his were evicted. Stirling was a shelter cat too. Only Tatiana, Chekov, and Dagny came from a breeder, the same one, as it happens.

33 Many decades ago, here at Webworker family estate, my grandmother kept peacocks. I barely remember, as a toddler, being confronted by one. Tail fanned out, head up high, and screeching. Just a little terrifying for little me.
______

That big bird up in the tree looks like a turkey vulture to me, too.

Years ago, before we cut down the big old dead tree, one evening I was out walking past it, and looked up to see a half-dozen of 'em roosting, staring down at me. Pretty spooky in the twilight. One by one, they took off. Impressive how big they are up close. Not as scary to grown-up me as that peacock was.

42 Arizona the big red-and-white was not fond of other cats (and not much more of strange people). He disliked little Siamese mix Wyoming, Mrs. Wolfus No. 2's kitten; he didn't like Lil Bit, the dilute calico I brought in after my mother passed on; or Marie-Antoinette, whom he knew (to his vast irritation) in his last two years. Every one of them was good-natured and were willing to get along with him. But no.

He wasn't any too fond of strange men, either. He was okay with women I brought over, but I was "his" human and that was all there was to that.

46 I'd have adopted cats more often from shelters. But I really like the look of the medium- to long-haired cats. And it seems they don't arrive in shelters, or if they do they don't stay long. Stirling's littermates were all bushy, silver-tipped part-Persians, or so they appeared on the Vicksburg shelter website. I'd thought I was going to get one of those. But he was the last of his litter, and though obviously destined to be big, and sweet and confident, he was a medium-hair.

He passed his audition and got the part of my house cat. Now he's really made the role his own.

Looking up from his cage was this fuzzy red tabby with a white chest and paws. The paws and ears were huge, the chest stuck out proudly. He was clearly going to be a large cat. He beamed up at us with a look that said, "I'm a great deal! Take *me* home!"

We brought our 3 cats from Africa, all shelter cats, a Mom and kitten and a male (black). There black cats seldom get adopted. This one had already overstayed and was due for the shot. But their sweet personalities, and a degree of clownishness, have been wonderful. Our current, Precious the Bichon, is 16 now. She'll be with us for a year next month.

62 Snake above has the markings of a copperhead. Because of the way it's being held, I can't tell if the head's the right shape. And my eyesight's not good enough to see if it has the pits that it should, i.e., "pit viper."

71 37 Truth! Cats will stand their ground. Every cat I ever owned did that. Plant themselves in a high traffic area. None shall pass! they declare. Try to pass, you will get a swat. Or a hiss.

Posted by: gourmand du jour at June 22, 2024 04:23 PM (MeG8a)

I hiss and growl back, especially to the black one. I have to show I'm the alpha (cats have their pecking order too). One cat tries to get into the garage; if I'm there when he tries, the tone of my voice and my words are enough 90% of the time to make him turn back. Cats are (somewhat) trainable.
I do pet and scratch the cats to their enjoyment quite a bit. Still training the new one that chewing my fingers and toes is not a good thing to do.

I'm not a fan, unpredictable as a general breed. One individual is a couch potato, one looks exactly the same is an unpredictable killer.
Too much poor breeding.

It is. I told my son, regarding the 16-year-old cat, that I would not go through any expensive life-saving therapies on him, and when it became apparent he was in pain, he should be put to sleep, and that my son should be there to comfort him during that time. Tough time, but like with people, cats should not pass alone.

True indeed! No less than Saki himself (H.H. Munro) said it best:

Confront a child, a puppy, and a kitten with a sudden danger; the child will turn instinctively for assistance, the puppy will grovel in abject submission, the kitten will brace its tiny body for a frantic resistance.

Granted, Saki was a cat person, and we all know of dogs that wouldn't grovel, but he captures the feline spirit quite well.

88 In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on their favorite chair ... must try this on their bed.

LOL, that's the black cat. One day the younger one starting shooting nerf darts. 2nd oldest cat loved chasing them; older cat hated it. One day, he was high on the cat tower, over the child's bed and the nerf rifle son used was on his bed. Cat had HUGE vomit that hit almost every level of the cat tower, covered the rifle, the bed, and anything on the floor at the bed's edge; I think he did it on purpose.

89 I've ranted about this before; people with untrained dogs that frequent "pet friendly" stores.

I've witnessed 3 dog fights at this one place and had at least two leashed animals nip at me. One I nearly shot dead in the store before gathering my wits. (started to pull my CCW, but stopped.)

I blame the owners. They're mostly retards. But some animals are beyond repair.

I like the idea - maybe intermingle them with the Brown Tree Snakes that have overrun Guam - over the last few years the USDA have spent something around 8 million to control their numbers. The latest plan is - I kid you not - airdropping dead mice laced with acetaminophen.

Our neighbours kittens are outdoors. I bring our older dog there. The kittens come up to the fence.

Ralphy gave an excited bark and this little 2 pound furball hissed adorably.

And Twilight, one of the older two cats, yesterday just layed in the driveway while the girls were giving the dog treats. Not even scared of the dog. But I've taken care of girl. She has taken plenty of flesh and drawn much blood from me....

105 Snake....A species of "Black Snake". Have seen quite a few over the past few years that came in many different colors, much like the Corn Snake. Some will keep those color patterns as they mature, some will obtain a more overall black appearance. Last adult I caught in the chicken coop was about 6 1/2 long. They might take an egg or two now and again but I appreciate them keeping the rodent population down.

The Bird: Yup, Turkey Buzzard. I know it sounds weird but I think they're awesome birds and huge. Yeah, not faces made for TV but once you start seeing them up close over time. Didn't get the picture of him spreading out his wings but would have estimated pretty close to six feet overall.

And then the deer: We planted peanuts again this year and they absolutely love them. I also put out a few feeding stations of corn mixed with nutritional supplements which they must really like because they just tear it up. They've been coming out at hours I never thought deer would. From 10 in the morning, 3 in the afternoon. I think it may also have to do with the heat and coming out of the woods to get some air.

107 Stella’s story brought me to tears. Our Chino is doing poorly, going from one seizure this January, to multiple convulsions over the last few weeks. We will be taking him to the vet tomorrow, but I fear he is nearing his end. He was a rescue my daughter adopted, and I took in when her new job made it impossible to keep him. He has been with me for 2 1/2 years, and it will be hard to lose him.
