Emergency Backup Overnight Thread – 06/06/2024

Dave unintentionally went off the grid due to an extended power outage, so with apologies, you are getting a relief pitcher who didn’t even bring his glove to the park. But don’t worry about me, Dave is the one whose food has all spoiled, so right now he’s in his backyard feeding his family by roasting cicadas on a stick like marshmallows.

Let’s find something to discuss…

How about songs whose lyrics you always heard wrong or just had fun singing incorrectly?

I don’t think I can ever hear the Bee Gees’ lyrics the right way again after watching this video:

When I was a little kid, my best buddy and I would sit together at church services. Our favorite hymn was “Lead On O King Eternal” because we thought we were just hilarious singing “Lead On O Kinky Turtle” instead. Well, we tried to sing it that way, but we were giggling too hard to get the words out.

Lead on, O kinky turtle
The day of march has come;
Henceforth in fields of conquest
Thy tents shall be our home.
Through days of preparation
Thy grace has made us strong;
And now, O kinky turtle,
We lift our battle song.

Here is Wayne’s World with their Top-5 Misheard lyrics.

Here are some more good ones:

Paul Young: "Every time you go away, you take a piece of meat with you." (Every time you go away, you take a piece of me with you.)

ABBA: "See that girl, watch her scream, kicking the dancing queen." (See that girl, watch that scene, diggin’ the dancing queen.)

The Eurythmics: "Sweet dreams are made of cheese” (Sweet dreams are made of these.)

Johnny Nash: "I can see clearly now, Lorraine is gone" (I can see clearly now the rain is gone.)

Bon Jovi: "It doesn't make a difference if we're naked or not" (It doesn’t make a difference if we make it or not.)

Selena Gomez: "I'm farting carrots" (I’m 14 carat.)

Queen: "Kicking your cat all over the place" (Kicking you can all over the place.)

Kings of Leon: "Oh, dyslexics on fire” (Oh this sex is on fire.)

Sister Sledge: "Let me just staple the vicar” (Let me state for the record.)

Will Smith: "Kick a chicken with it" (Getting jiggy with it.)

Elton John: "Hold me closer, Tony Danza" (Hold me closer tiny dancer.)

What are some of yours?

113 The alt-weekly in Seattle wrote a whole article on my favorite fake statistic:

"Did you know that a third of Americans don't have drivers licenses?"

This is inevitably followed by a rant on how evil and car-centric American culture is, how we need to develop more "transportation alternatives" to assist this huge minority of non-drivers, blah, blah, blah.

It turns out that the majority of people without drivers licenses don't have them for one simple reason - they aren't old enough to get a drivers license.

"More transportation alternatives for two-year-olds!"

Trotting out the actual relevant statistic - that about a fifth of adult Americans don't have drivers licenses - isn't impressive enough for the car-haters, so they invariably go with the one-third number.

The hilarious thing is that Spanish law says that victims of genocide have an absolute right to emigrate to Spain, so all the Spanish politicians chanting "genocide, genocide" are creating a legal right for every person in Gaza to emigrate to Spain.

The worried people in the Spanish legal system started saying: "Guys? Could you tone down the rhetoric a little bit?"

149 In summer camp we’d sing “Joy Is Like the Rain” and my friend and I would sing “Joy is Yoj Spelled Backwards”. There were a lot of thinly-veiled protest songs in kids’ camp in the early ‘70s, indoctrinating young skulls full of mush even then. Then there was “Green Grow the Rushes Ho”, a bizarre 12-verse Christian-Druid hybrid nobody understood, and when we got to five we’d go “Five golden rings!”

Back in the day, that be the early 90s, there was a plaque on the building in Portland, OR where Louie, Louie was supposedly recorded. If I remember correctly it was a trashy place with a porno shop around the corner where all kinds of different love took place. It got plowed over eventually and it is now a multi story condo building with some shitty but expensive restaurants on the first floor.

Starliner docked and the two crewmembers are onboard the ISS. The NASA Commercial Crew Program Manager is an acquaintance of mine. I sent him congratulations a while ago and he texted back, "Thanks. It was a challenging day." He is an understated guy, calm, cool, and collected under pressure. Him calling today challenging must mean things were on the edge of the docking being called off for today, maybe for the mission.

Anyway, she said recently "here's one we could afford - it's called Margaritaville.'"

It's only sorta music-themed. "Margaritaville" properties also include bars, restaurants, resorts and retirement communities.

Yes, they're all technically themed around Jimmy Buffett music - but it's more than that. It's the "Jimmy Buffett lifestyle." Self-absorbed geriatric children on permanent vacation, guzzling well tequila and spreading herpes to each other.

They call themselves "Parrotheads," and they're essentially the physical embodiment of every single negative stereotype about boomers.

299 Misheard song lyrics - this one may be a little obscure, but it was popular among a lot of different Protestant denomination. Every Sunday morning at church, without fail, the Song Leader would always announce Hymn Number 23, "Did You Think to Pray?"

Every Sunday, ever. We all knew what it was, but people still waited until the number was called to pull out the Hymn Book - the same way that everyone had 'their" pew in church and by custom, everyone adhered to that.

Everyone would belt out the lyrics, in their best NE Mississippi accents, and some words would blend together - when I was young I always heard the verse "When sore trials came upon you, did you think to pray?" as "When Sortriles came upon you, did you think to pray?" Up to around age six or so, I was convinced that some critters named Sortriles might come upon you, and you were done for, so might as well pray.

Watch the video of any Buffet concert. Same apparel. Same inflatable sharks. Same bouncing beach balls. Same repeated gestures (fins up!) and the like.

They follow the liturgy like supplicants in a church, and they're lacking only the incense and confessional to make it complete. For incense, they've got pot, I suppose.

It's that glazed eyed, slack jawed, numbingly conformist HERD that turns me off to most things Buffet, even though I've enjoyed some of his earlier work. Come Monday is a great song, no matter what.

378 Honestly, I'm still surprised that Memphis had a brief renaissance in the late 80s and early 90s. By the 60s and 70s, downtown Memphis, especially Beale Street, was a Southern-fried version of pre-Guiliani Times Square. People shooting up on the curbs, hookers like flocks of geese. Muggings, car theft, you name it.

Then along came a real estate developer by the name of Sidney Schlenker. He convinced the Memphis mayor and city council that gentrifying Beale Street and building a huge glass pyramid would save Memphis. They fell for it, hook, line, and sinker. After construction on the Memphis Pyramid (and the monorail you took to reach it) were nearly completed, Sidney skipped town and left Memphis with a gigantic boondoggle. But, since Denver toppled, they've started running the dirtiest elections in the country (going well back before 2020). I wouldn't trust *any* CO results. Blue may not really mean blue in their case.

The Puget Sound counties from Everett to Olympia dominate Washington state in about every way imaginable except for the Palouse wheat production. King County, which is where Seattle and the Eastside cities are located, alone can dictate Washington politics. Like many other states, the non Urban areas skew conservative but do not have the population to effect any changes in the State which is why Washington is something of a totalitarian Marxist state and is becoming ever more that as time goes one. Spokane was a fairly red city until a decade ago which is when all the lunatics from Seattle began moving their because real estate was still affordable. Today is much like the Puget Sound cities but with more horses.

Here's some examples of how they roll in CO:

GOP registration destruction is rampant in the Front Range Corridor, particularly at Universities and with canvassing in commercial districts - that's been an open secret for at least 20 years ago that I know of.

They went full mail-in early on there. When I lived in Park County, the scam was sorta, kinda subtle. The envelope had a hole in it. The ballots had a red block on them. In different places for registered Dems and Republicans - so when you placed your ballot in the envelope per the instructions, it gave the vote counters a handy red or white visual indicator so they knew which to toss.

In Adams County, they dispensed with that pleasantry, and just openly color coded the envelopes.

I'm sure there's many other examples, but those are the ones I've personally experienced. Election integrity there has been a joke for a loooong time.

399 When in college I heard on the radio John Couger Mellencamps song "Pop Singer." I really hated latter-day John Couger and his douche-y arrogance, but this song struck a cord with me. It struck a cord because the lyric I heard was:

"I never wanted to be no Bob Seger.
Never wanted to write no Bob Song."

I thought that was some serious shade to be throwing at Bob Seger, which earned plenty of points on the "having some serious balls" chart I tallied in the back of my mind. It wasn't like I wasn't already tired of Bob Seger by then, but I thought this was next musician posturing. Though I hated the song (which I truly believed was entitled "Bob Seger"), I earned some level of respect for Mellencamp.

What brought this full circle is one night I was watching "Later" with Bob Costas, and he was interviewing Mellencamp. Mellencamp was bitching about his new girlfriend (who was much younger, of course) and how she would screw up the lyrics to songs on the radio and it made him nuts.

401 The 2004 Governor's race was the death rattle for the GOP in Washington. The Republican candidate on election night was ahead but not enough to stop the Dems ramping up the steal machine. Over then next couple of weeks that is exactly what happened with ballots popping up all over the place, mostly in King County. These were in addition to Acorn's massive ballot harvesting operation. In the end it was the first of many stunning come from behind victories for Democrats over the years. From my perspective is was the prototype for what happened in 2020.

An anthropologist is visiting a primitive society. One night, he hears drums beating in the distance. Concerned, he asks one of the tribesmen what's up with the drums. The native says "Drums ok, but if drums stop very bad--run away."

The drums beat on for an hour. Still uneasy, the anthropologist asks again if things are ok. Again, the native replies "Drums ok, but if drums stop very bad -- run away."

After another hour, the drums stop. The native stops dead in his tracks and looks up and says "Drums stop! Very bad! Run away!!"

Scared now, the anthropologist asks what happens next.

The native replies "Bass solo!"

Count Bing and Edge in with Goggle in that omission, too.

IMAGINE had the founders of the tech giants been PATRIOTS ???

What glories would...could...they have helped raise this republic to have risen?

And this makes me despise THEM, all the more.

453 A short course of immunotherapy was found to be highly effective in a subset of patients with colon cancer. The treatment, which consisted of two cycles of immunotherapy prior to surgery, was effective in almost all patients. In two-thirds of patients, there were no longer any live tumor cells at the time of surgery. The patients' immune systems had cleaned up the cancer cells. These discoveries were made as part of the NICHE-2 trial

the NICHE-2 trial at the Netherlands Cancer Institute and have been published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Trial done on one specific genetic makeup, known as mismatch-repair deficient (dMMR) or microsatellite instable (MSI),

Posted by: mikeski

I suspect that Microsoft can disable this for major government and corporate customers or the customers through administration magic can make it go away.

My take on the various AI cockups is the tech companies are pedal to the metal to secure a dominant position with respect to AI and are trying to come up with the "killer app" that will do just that.

Us mortals are not privy to how these tech companies envision AI impacting the world but they clearly have it their heads this is going to be the next major wave of computing (very roughly so far: After Bletchley, PCs, Internet, Mobile) and that it is going be the most impactful period computing with trillions of dollars in the wind.

Buckle up because we are at square .01 and even if you dump the major tech companies for something like Linux and open source software you are still screwed; my gut check where this all ends up in a decade or two is going to make everything up to now look like the dark ages.

495 The tech companies do stupid crap all the time but for the big stuff they think deeply, broadly, and with intent the goes out years into the future. Maybe Microsoft royally screwed up with Recall Then again maybe Microsoft had a very clear idea of the risks, the potential uproar and decided it was still in their strategic interest to go ahead with this. The answer to this will become clear over time. What is certain the people in charge of these corporations are some of the sharpest people on the planet and to think they aren't is a mistake. All I can say is big things are in play, I don't understand them in depth, and time will tell if the current brush fire is just that or the something more.

There's no better way to show there's no two-tiered system of justice than proving there's a two-tiered system of justice.

I still think Garland is doing what he's doing, not just for ideological reasons being a Democrat and all, but for revenge in not becoming a Supreme Court justice.

Garland's legal 'serpentine' games, for want of a better term, can only be explained by revenge on top of the ideological aspect. He is pissed off at America, Trump and Republicans for being denied his rightful place in History. Sounds a lot like Hillary hating on Trump for him denying her her rightful place in History as the first woman president, that 'pink ceiling' bullshit.

So, to me, all the mud being slung at Trump to see what sticks has a lot of its underpinnings in revenge. The whole intelligence 'community', i.e., is not thrilled with another Trump presidency, because they know this time it's with more revenge. Our 'rule of law' politics has devolved into Rome's unsustainable government by revenge. But if we don't do it, they won't stop.

542 Hey there just wanted to give you a quick heads up.
The text in your post seem to be running off the screen in Ie.
I'm not sure if this is a formatting issue or something to do with browser compatibility but I thought I'd post to let you know.
The design and style look great though! Hope you get the issue resolved soon. Thanks
