Top Story

The rumors were correct, and at Computex Taipei today AMD announced new CPUs due in stores next month. (AnandTech)

The Zen 3 based eight core 5800XT (a minor speed upgrade over the 5800X) and sixteen core 5900XT (a major upgrade over the twelve core 5900X) will refresh the AM4 platform.
Oh, and Zen 5 will also be out next month. (AnandTech)

These will arrive in the form of the 9600X, 9700X, 9900X, and 9950X, with TDPs ranging from 65W for the first two, to 170W for the 9950X.

The 9600X and 9700X use 40W less than their Zen 4 predecessors, and the 9700X uses 50W less.

At the same time they're an average of 16% faster on real tests, and twice as fast in some specific cases.
Server CPUs are coming soon as well, with up to 192 cores.

If it's the same 5560U model (or any of their Ryzen 5000 series), it will have two DDR4 SODIMM slots. Most likely comes with just one populated.

Undo the four screws on the bottom, pull on the little tab, and it pops open and the memory slots and SSD are right there.

It's a very easy upgrade, just make sure the RAM clicks into place, close it back up, and off you go.

Speaking of Copilot, I just learned that Windows recently implemented a "shut off all the pointless and stupid crap running the background tracking me and trying to sell me stuff" setting. They didn't name it that, of course, but according to MS and Toms Hardware:

"... Uncontrolled background applications are one of the primary causes of accelerated battery drain, since these applications are practically invisible to the user. They can come in any form, including Windows updates, browser tabs, uninterrupted background video playback, backup programs, and more."

It's absurdly in the Global Warming section of Windows instead of the "oh, that makes sense" power settings section, but I guess if it was in power settings people would see and use it and limit a lot of Windows tracking and ad-selling.

Since it's in the "reduce my carbon footprint" section it's almost guaranteed that no one will ever know about it.

I engaged it on the gaming laptop and battery life went from two to six hours.

Whatcha doing back there, Microsoft?

Back from my workout and shower, and having morning chow after slopping the feline hogs. Traffic on the bridge is likely to be a bit heavier starting today; a ferry that siphons off a portion of commuters is out of service for dry dock work and inspection. The Great Panjandrums say it'll be out for about 90 days. Around here, that usually translates to from 120 to 180.

What ticks me about Microsoft. Every new Windows version essentially means you have to get a new computer. But what more are you getting with each new operating system? What is it about 11 that's so much better than 7?

Or, I'm using File Explorer. I have a list on the screen of files and their attributes. Why can't I export what I see on the screen to Excel? To export the information on my music files, I have to use a Media Info Exporter that can only be found on a Winter Time Fun Pack CD from eons ago.

a paid internship with a fellow originally from Nigeria and who was in grad school in VA and who doesn't have a car. I don't know how far he lives away from the company, but FenSon picks him up every weekday morning to drive him to work. I hope that when they get their first paycheck that young man will offer son some money for gas because son probably wouldn't ask.

The shelves that I could get to are barred with duct tape until I ran out of duct tape. As soon as the hardware store is open, I'll get more duct tape. What didn't fit on the shelves got put in a box, taped shut with marker on it to prevent tampering. Books that we're reading to Lil Pooky got put in a locked file cabinet that only I have the keys to.

I know it seems drastic, but she's short on sleep and therefore can't focus (new meds aren't great) and this has been going on for at least three years. Nothing we've done has worked, so cold turkey it is.

78 I'm still using Win7 on my main PC. I do have win 10 and 11 systems but they are just to support clients. Most times I just access those systems with remote desktop and don't even have a keyboard or monitor on them. It's like running Win11 on Win 7.

Speaking of which, suddenly out-of-nowhere a couple of months ago, I now have tinnitus -- a constant ringing in the ears. Ugh, really annoying when I frequently become aware of it.

Being over 29*2, turns out most people I know in their 60s & 70s seem to have it -- and usually the brain eventually compensates and tunes it out for the most part.
