Top Story

  • Xbox is was down. (Reddit)

Pixy, your Xbox and Xbox 360 are sitting in a box in the garage, and your Xbox Series X is sitting in its original box in the closet because you still haven't opened it. What do you care?

I can't log in to Minecraft.

I have Minecraft installed. I have my own server. I can't play it because a service I don't use and don't care about is down.
You may not be able to sign-in to your Xbox profile, may be disconnected while signed in, or have other related problems. Features that require sign-in like most games, apps and social activity won't be available.
This apparently includes offline single-player games that you have already installed on your console. And Minecraft.

  • Live Nation has confirmed earlier reports of a data breach. (Tech Crunch)

The company itself wasn't hacked, but:
A spokesperson for Ticketmaster, who would not provide their name but responded from the company's media email address, told TechCrunch that its stolen database was hosted on Snowflake, a Boston-based cloud storage and analytics company.
    I hate cloud storage.
Snowflake said in a post on Friday that it had informed a "limited number of customers who we believe may have been impacted" by attacks "targeting some of our customers' accounts." Snowflake did not describe the nature of the attacks, or if data had been stolen from customer accounts.
The problem there is that when Snowflake says "a limited number of customers", they mean "a handful of the largest corporations in America", not "a small number of individual people".

And just one of Snowflake's customers had half a billion customers of its own.

As always with security, it's only as strong as the Post-it note on the intern's desk at your cloud storage provider.

7 Willowed in the ONT, but if Quint is still here, this is the answer to his question:

you saying they were drinking the vanilla extract? Because anyone that country and hard-core certainly would know where to find some white lightning.
Posted by: Quint

Oh, yes, they were definitely drinking it. Country store merchants made a sizable part of their sales from it. Folks that might have some moral qualms about dealing with a bootlegger wouldn't hesitate to buy a legal alternative.

The local Shine was not highly regarded - the distillers cut corners, and ended up with contaminated products. In one case I heard, a possum had crawled in and died in the apparatus, and a lot of mason jars full had been made and sold before the Moonshiners found out.

The best Shine, bar none, that I ever drank came from North Carolina - Mississippi just wasn't in their league. If you were willing to deal with the Stateline Mob (see the story of Buford Pusser for reference) you could buy the regular conventional liquor, but that was like dealing with a red neck version of the Mafia, with all of the bad and none of the good.

Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.

Harper Lee fudged things a bit there. I like Mockingbirds, but they can be mean little critters, much like Blue Jays. If you enter "their" territory, they will sometimes elect to swoop down and make a nuisance of themselves, as Jays also tend to do. They're highly intelligent and have an amazing repertoire of birdcalls they they imitate, and some have been documented imitating car alarms. But innocent little songsters? Not necessarily.

That reminds me of Elena Ceausescu. According to Ion Mihai Pacepa in Red Horizons (excellent book, btw), she saw American television shows depicting chock-full grocery stores and thought it was all total BS. Even when visiting the states on official business, she thought it was all a front when they were taken to various places which, obviously, showed the plenty America had in every kind of store. She didn't believe it was real. But then again, she was arrogant, ignorant and nuts.

197 Median USA rent now > $1300/mo. How the hell does anybody afford to find shelter anymore? How can somebody just starting their career deal with this shit?

--

Jr. Black, aged 27, moved home last summer to escape his $1400+ rent...in Greenville, SC. He had no hope of ever saving enough money for a downpayment for a house if he had to keep whizzing away that kind of money every month. So he's home saving a nice chunk of money right now. Rent is insane. My first apartment in 1986 was $275 a month.

200 City trash contractor instituted a new rule this year, without telling anybody. If you want the trashman to pick up a mattress, now you have to call to schedule it. Trouble is, they don't answer the phone. So I had to call city govt to ring their bell.

Then, they didn't pick it up, and didn't tell me why. After a bunch more BS, they tell me I have to wrap the mattress in fucking visqueen, because mattresses have 'bodily fluids' on them. So I did that yesterday.

Now the mattress is already turning black with mold, because it's wet from sitting in the rain for a month, and now it's wrapped in fucking plastic, so it's a mold factory. I bet the assholes will refuse to take it again on Tuesday. When I'm conveniently out of town, out of contact.

And the city will issue me a code violation on Friday if it's not gone. ProTip: never, ever be a landlord.

208 For some reason I thought of John Bigbutt in Buckeroo Banzai.
‘Big Bootay!’
Posted by: Eromero

Buckaroo Banzai was such an awesome movie - loaded to the gills with easter eggs and subtle jokes and allusions. And best of all, they started with the premise that the world of Buckaroo Banzai was already established and challenged the audience to get up to speed. I still wish that they had actually done the sequel they teased in the credits: Buckaroo Banzai Versus The World Crime League and gave us a chance to see Hanoi Shan.

It's one of those films that says to the audience, you're smart enough to get this, the opposite of what most Hollywood product seeks to go. And it rewards with something new on every reviewing.

231 I've used them a handful of times. If you own a truck and live near a public landfill, you should do it yourself as it's way cheaper. But if you don't, what other option you got? Can't burn in the city.

Most of my experiences with them cost in the 200-300 range.

If it's just one mattress that's probably 1/4 charge. So whatever that is on the website.

They will quote you before they start loading. If it's too much, just decline and they leave.

Periodically, I check Astoria Queens, the average 1 bedroom apartment is anywhere from 1500 to 2500 dollars a month.

So going by the 30pct rule, you need a gross income of 75k to 125k to afford that apartment.

Not many people starting out make that kind of money.
