There is actually quite a bit of truth to that, though I think the basic underlying attitude is incorrect. It incentivizes men to be productive, which is not entirely the same thing.
But underlying attitude aside, there is fundamental truth in the assessment, which is one of the reasons that the destruction of marriage is an ongoing catastrophe.
To answer Robbie's question, the benefits of a successful marriage are the same as they've always been. Longer and healthier life, better economic position and asset survivability, better outcomes for children, easier survival through division of responsibilities and labor (life's easier as a team sport), a sense and feeling of honor and respect, regular sex, self-esteem, etc. None of that has changed. The benefits of a successful marriage are what they are and have always been.
The contemporary difference is that the risks of an unsuccessful marriage are significantly greater than ever before, as are the odds of a marriage being unsuccessful.
The benefits didn't change. The cost:benefit (or risk:reward, if you prefer) analysis changed.

First of all, it's not a financial agreement. It is a religious commitment. So your initial premise is wrong. And yes, if men have to support a family, they need to go out and get a job and make something of themselves. Sure, you still have married bums, but most self-respecting men will choose to put their wives and children first and support them financially as much as they are able. And that is of immense benefit to the man, as well.

Not so much a lie as inability to understand statistical distribution, or even know it's a factor.
Go to any old cemetery and it's so obvious it will slap you in the face. Lots of kids and lots of old people. Absent wars, very few in the middle. Infant and early childhood mortality was very high. If you made past about age 6, though, you were probably going to make it into your sixties.
When most of your deaths are from the old and the very young, the average is going to fall into the middle, but it's a punctuated dataset and the average is a useless data artifact unless you control for at least one of the extremes. Life expectancy at age 5 or age 10 is a much more realistic basis for relative assessment.

First of all, it's not a financial agreement. It is a religious commitment. So your initial premise is wrong. And yes, if men have to support a family, they need to go out and get a job and make something of themselves. Sure, you still have married bums, but most self-respecting men will choose to put their wives and children first and support them financially as much as they are able. And that is of immense benefit to the man, as well.

Yes, marriage is a HUGE benefit to the west. Women stopped respecting themselves and their bodies and started slinging their only treasure around for free, with no expectations on behavior or outcome. Men can get that treasure without marriage. Matter of fact, marriage comes at tremendous financial risk for men, and almost zero risk for women.

I'm amazed. For the past 10 years at least - once smartphones saturated the market - my employer has *always* had expectations for company stuff on my own device, with company devices being a VP-level benefit (and stipends for personal equipment being reserved for road warriors).
E-Mail, authentication token systems, auth gateways for intranet stuff, etc. are always expected, and always on my own equipment. They even usually expect *chat* to be on my phone, which I steadfastly refuse to do.
It isn't *required,* of course, but it is of course required.

I assume adherence to religious norms of marriage is a fairly standard cultural thing. They're not interchangeable, but the motivation probably is.
Practicing vs non-practicing is probably another.
None of it matter, though, because the religious motivation would be the only advantage for any male in adhering to that type of government-recognized financial contract.

In his famous The Mask of Sanity, Hervey Cleckley gives a bunch of fascinating case histories of real psychopathic personalities. Not serial killers, no, but those with no apparent conscience and very little self-control, usually with alcohol but sometimes without, given to fantastic behavior, unreliability, and worse. He gives one history of a well-known doctor in a Southern state (this was the 1940s). He'd finished medical school and his training, had a practice and everything, yet threw off the mask of "proper member of society" at every opportunity and got drunk, propositioned strange women, and worse things.
A later edition of the book has a chapter on fictional psychopaths and one on Alcibiades of Periclean Greece, who exhibited all the traits.

I don't disagree. Ideally that would be the case. A traditional man with traditionally minded motivations, and a traditionally minded woman helping him pursue what's best for the family and progeny.
There is no (or at least very little) balance in any of that any longer. A man who married a modern Girl Boss thinking woman is agreeing to give her half of his stuff whenever she's ready to move on.
And she's taught from birth that she's a Girl Boss and to Never Settle and Girl Power etc.
Yes, I agree that marriage is ideal. The point remains: modern men have no motivation outside of religious adherence (which ties to your point, too) to enter into that financial state-approved contract with modern women.
I guess we could try to avoid discussing it, but that won't help the young men make good choices about what they're getting themselves into.

I think this is a decreasingly reasonable take. The divorce rate and initiation trend, along with the increasing exit of young men from dating altogether indicate that things have in fact changed in terms of baseline assessment.
The benefits of a successful marriage remain the same as they ever were. The damage potential of an unsuccessful marriage - and the odds of a marriage being unsuccessful - have increased radically and continue to worsen and that is certainly at least partially responsible for the decline in marriage as a whole.
There is plenty of room for argument as to causes, but the outcomes speak for themselves.

In many (most? not sure) states, this is a distinction without a difference. The contract is implied after some amount of time and common law marriage is still treated as religious or civil marriage by the state. All are under the same umbrella and rules.

There are three sound arguments on this question, as far as I have been able to determine.
The first argument is that there isn't, and the state shouldn't be involved. Register your marriage in your family bible (and/or with the church) and that's it. The state doesn't matter and shouldn't be involved.
The second argument is that there is broad interest in determining who one is allowed to marry, and that state involvement permits laws about it. This can be anything from reasonable restrictions (incest) to unreasonable restrictions (miscegenation, class differences, etc.). The interest is legitimate, even if the expression isn't.
The third argument is that there is broad interest in family formation and so special protections for family formation justifies state involvement to incentivize it through things like joint filing, community property within families, survivorship, etc.

There used to be balance in dissolution responsibility, which has been removed. It's a serious problem and the change - the so-called "tender years doctrine" - has been a disaster.
In the Before Times, if a marriage collapsed, there was little if any alimony, and child custody went to the man by default. As marriage is also a major mechanism to ensure paternity, this makes philosophical sense as well as practical sense. Men need marriage to ensure paternity, and the children are his.
But it has wild practical implications. For women, leaving for no reason was likely ruinous and for men it would not result in the footloose freedom he expected because he has to deal with and support the children.
The contemporary version of "wife gets the kids and child support by default, with potential for alimony" turned this on its head and made one side a lottery with good odds.

The state shouldn't have any say in inheritance. Write the will, have it notarized, done. One can leave one's estate to a pack of cats, the state has no say in it. Parents have authority over their children. Mom and Dad can't get along doesn't mean one no longer has parental rights. This stuff isn't really the purview of the state.
