In which case, have a somber memorial day as you prefer. I think you can do both- after all, a peaceful life here is what they sacrificed for. Posted by: Formerly Virginian at May 27, 2024 12:09 PM (JMAcK) 3

My grandfather was in France near the end of WW1. My mom's brother was a Marine in the Pacific and my dad's brother was in the Battle of the Bulge. Another of my mom's brothers was discharged from the Navy during the demobilization after WW2 and then drafted into the Army and fought in Korea where he received a Bronze Star for fixing a Jeep while under fire. My cousin was drafted and spent a year in Vietnam, probably 1969 or 1970. I had cousins in the Army and Air Force during the 1st Gulf War and in Afghanistan and Iraq in this century. That's the American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer in Normandy.
I was there a couple of years ago, and if anything it was in better shape, and the crowds were more respectful, than during my previous visit a dozen years before. The people outside of the cities in France remember, and they still honor the American and British sacrifice. ————————- CBD is spot on. My wife and I visited Normandy last month, got to C sur Mer just in time for the 1700 flag-lowering ceremony. “Moving” would be a gross understatement. Hearing Taps as Old Glory was lowered over those seemingly endless rows of crosses (and Stars of David) hits you viscerally. Not a few Yanks there that day, most old enough to remember how to show respect to the colors. And yes, the French keep those grounds immaculate. And still honor the war dead. This is a heavy drinking day in our house, and unfortunately I can't participate this year. Pooky doesn't like being reminded of the people he lost to suicide or how close he came himself, or how the military effed him up so bad he can barely function.
HOWEVER, yesterday after the church service that briefly recognized vets, his computer teacher from high school found him and told him how great it was to see him on the American Legion float a week ago. Pooky played it off as everyone loving to see JT, but I could tell that small gesture meant a lot to him. The small tank models on the German HQ's map board are HO-scale (1/87) Roco Minitanks, made in Austria. The German Bundeswehr actually used these little models in maneuver war games, but the firm was only founded in 1960 and they were therefore obviously not used in WW2. The small German tank models are real King Tigers, not the US M47 used in the battle scenes or depicted by the large model in the HQ.

Posted by: Bulgaroctonus at May 27, 2024 01:17 PM (v6JzV) He was stationed in Texas and Nebraska, but when he was in Nebraska, he deployed with his plane a lot, mostly to SE Asia. That was when KJU was firing off nuke tests and missiles (thank God PDT halted that for awhile), plus Fukishima happened, so he got exposed to a large amount of radiation. That's what started the spiral, and the VA has been carefully documenting it all and trying to treat it. He likes to tell people he's 110% disabled (technically true).
