for me it's ants

the old wives tale is the ants help open them, but that's untrue. they don't hurt the peonies at all, but they're just looking for the sweet pollen to eat.

my peonies smell so strongly I can smell them right now and they're yards away. of course I have a roman nose like this gentleman does lol

My husband's grandfather loved, loved his peonies but they were often plagued with Japanese beetles. Hubs said his granddad used to take a pair of pliers out to the plants and crush each beetle separately cussing loudly as he did so.

115 I like this painting for the accurate portrayal of the flowers and the other details of the florist shop. The rather soft colors and flatness of the background make the bouquet stand out from the rest of the image. Very effective in its simple way.

I also like the way it suggests a scenario: older man (the cane) of limited means (careful with the money) buying a lovely bouquet of flowers for his beloved wife to enjoy during the cold winter months (heavy coat and scarf). And with his face hidden, it could be anyone in the circumstance. It's the act that is being shown.

Yes, I can be romantic. Why do you ask?

Go generic and write something nice. Dirt cheap and they last forever.

There is a play being put on locally that is Chinese. And every actor in the play is...east Asian. I can't swear there aren't any Koreans or Japanese but there are no white people or black people or whatever.

But I'm sure that the ethnicity of the actors was not part of whether they were cast or not...

Huh? What does one have to do with the other? What is the point the writer here is trying to make? That the oil refining business in California is in rough shape, and that the state makes more on a gallon than the producer does? These - the state vig and the producer's profits (or losses) - are independent variables. Was it a stupid way to try to "contextualize" state profit by showing it to be not too outsized as compared to gross revenue?

Btw there's a peony farm nearby, in Chadds Ford, PA, Wyeth Country, and it sells beautiful cut peonies and also advertises, "Come and see 25 acres of more than 55,000 peonies in bloom!"

Thanks.

191 Enough Already: It’s Time to Reform the Supreme Court. Modest Madisonian modifications to the machinery of our constitutional system.

I was skeptical about term limits and Court expansion. But since the immunity hearing, and many rulings detached from precedent, practicality, or public opinion, I’ve had zero doubt about term limits and I’m warming up to the prospect of a thirteen-justice Court.

The point is not to pack the Court and send it screeching left, but to rebalance and stabilize an institution that has grown smug, immodest, inured to ethics abuses, and cavalier to constitutional and national concerns and freedoms—starting with whether a president who tried to stay in power despite losing an election should be tried for that before voters pass judgment on his third presidential campaign.

Conservatives have been largely pleased with this Court’s rulings. But the political, legal, and human consequences, especially from losing the constitutional right to legal abortion, are just beginning. It is not difficult to envision term limits producing a more moderate Court, to the benefit of a less ideological, less theocratic, less MAGA GOP of the future.

232 Joanne Hsu, who is the director of the University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment survey, told CNBC on Friday that she thinks Americans have abandoned plans to save money as they see their financial goals look less attainable and are spending money instead.

“This positive spending is not a reflection of some sort of internalized secret sense of confidence that consumers have,” he explained. “And instead my interpretation is that consumers see that a lot of aspirational goals that we talk about as part of the American Dream—homeownership, paying for college, paying for college for your kids, having a comfortable retirement—with high prices and high interest rates right now, those aspirational goals just feel increasingly out of reach.”

And as a result, consumers have “given up” on saving for those goals, Hsu added, noting that the still-strong labor market allows them to spend now.

Inflation gives demand a time preference, at least for durable goods.

"I need 'X' and I know it is going to be 10% more if I wait a year. I'm pulling the trigger now."

I did this. My HVAC system was extremely old and the next fault would be the last fault. It worked, but I got a good price by buying during a slow period, had time to shop it and get the best quite for the equipment I wanted, etc. I didn't *have* to replace the HVAC last year, but I judged it to be a sensible thing to do given inflation, job unreliability, etc.

But I merely pulled it forward. It contributed to GDP last year instead of this year or next.

I think advancing these sorts of purchases makes sense. But spending on perishable purchases simply because of the (correct) perception that our economy is decaying is dangerous. There is no residual value to a restaurant dinner or a day at the stadium.

An amazing article I posted last week seems appropriate again:

We can print money responsibly to fulfill all our progressive policy requirements. We have been indoctrinated to transfer our income and wealth to the top continuously. The fact is, we can print money responsibly without borrowing money from the oligarchy.

The notion that a sovereign nation like the United States should refrain from printing its own money to fund deficit spending is a flawed and outdated economic perspective. The United States can responsibly print money to finance progressive policies without triggering runaway inflation.

The core principles of Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) provide a compelling framework for understanding why this is possible and necessary for achieving social and economic justice. The issue’s heart lies in a fundamental misunderstanding of modern economies’ operations. Critics of printing money often invoke fears of hyperinflation, drawing misguided parallels to historical examples like Weimar Germany or Zimbabwe.

Capitalism is not a theory--it is a law.

It's like saying "supply and demand" are theories.
Or the Sun is a theory.

Capitalism, the exchange of goods and services for value, just is.

Everything else is an unproven hypothesis that has failed every experiment often with mass starvation and graves.
