Daily Tech News 20 May 2024

Top Story

I'm not sure what programmers are thinking when they do things like this. Two cases I ran into over the weekend:

  • In the LXD service for managing containers and virtual servers, you can route individual ports from the public internet to specific containers. If you have an email server in a container, you can route just the email ports (SMTP, POP, IMAP and so on) to it, without exposing anything else.

If you want to preserve the public IP address - important in a lot of tasks - you have to set up this route in NAT mode.

You can't do that; your container needs a static IP first.

You can't add a static IP to your container; you can't override the network connection on the default bridge.

You can't override the default bridge... Wait, you can override the default bridge? Why can I do that, but not just assign a static IP, which is a much more trivial operation?

  • When setting up multiple blogs under WordPress, the first thing you need to do is edit the WordPress source code.

Then you have to disable all your plugins.

Then you can run the setup routine to configure a multi-site network.

What that setup routine does is give you a list of additional changes you need to make to the WordPress source code - and to your Apache configuration.

This makes my own blogging software feel like a beacon of light in a howling void, when at this point it's mostly kind of meh and seriously needs updating.

Anime Music Video of the Day

Song is Counting Stars by OneRepublic. Anime is of course Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea. Some people don't think highly of Ponyo. Those people are bad.

"The sisters of Mount St. Scholastica do not believe that Harrison Butker's comments in his 2024 Benedictine College commencement address represent the Catholic, Benedictine, liberal arts college that our founders envisioned and in which we have been so invested," the nuns wrote in a statement posted on Facebook.
In his 20-minute address, Butker denounced abortion rights, Pride Month, COVID-19 lockdowns and "the tyranny of diversity, equity and inclusion" at the Catholic liberal arts college in Atchison, Kan.
He also told women in the audience to embrace the "vocation" of homemaker.

Wow... so Mr Journalist guy... the Nuns objected to ALL of those things in his speech? No? The nuns only objected to him proclaiming motherhood as a woman's highest calling? Because of course a nun would.

132 Far be it from me to violate the American Library Association Bill of Rights...

More recently, library privacy worries surfaced in North Carolina following the passage of state senate Bill 49, known as the Parents’ Bill of Rights. Aside from its politically motivated ban on school discussion of gender identity, sexual activity, or sexuality below fifth grade, it gives parents access to their child's library records.

The North Carolina School Library Media Association has objected to the law, which is being challenged in court, because it asks school libraries to violate the American Library Association Bill of Rights.

162 The Minisforum V3 is quite interesting at that price point. A couple things I noticed. The screen is 14 in and has a 16:10 aspect ratio.

After using various Surface Pros for about 7 years as my daily driver PC I have found 3:2 aspect ratio screen to be about ideal especially when using it in tablet mode. Over the years I've compared the Surface Pros as tablets to various comparable screen size tablets that use a 16:10 aspect ratio screen and I have found them to be unwieldy, especially when in portrait orientation. This is a very specific nitpick but a non-trivial one. When you toss in that both devices weigh about 2 lb the weight and balance offered by both aspect ratios becomes quite noticeable and in the case of 16:10 quite sub optimal.

She wasn't on the bridge.
She was under the bridge.

After they offloaded quite number of containers from the bow area, and removed thousands of tons of the bridge from her bow, she pretty much would assume her original draft depth.

After the collision they intentionally ballasted her down to set on the bottom. That was to provide a more stable platform to work from, and not have her being moved by tidal currents during the recovery process.
