Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | THE MORNING RANT: Cracker Barrel Went Woke and Now It’s Going BrokeIn June of 2023 Cracker Barrel went woke, deciding that it could bring in new customers and investors by sexualizing the front porch with rainbow-striped rocking chairs. As it turned out, that was not a good marketing strategy, and it had the effect of repulsing existing customers who don’t want country cooking to be sexualized, be it gay, straight, or otherwise. The fallout was immediate, with consumers announcing boycotts and the stock price taking an initial hit. Despite a lack of headlines or buzz since then, the boycott has continued and has been devastating to Cracker Barrel. The restaurant chain permanently ran off a great many loyal customers, and the persistently “unexpected” decline in traffic is taking a serious financial toll on the company. It was just announced this week that Cracker barrel is slashing its dividend by 81%. Cracker Barrel stock has fallen from $102 per share at the start of “Pride Month” 2023 to $49 per share now, a 52% decline. “Cracker Barrel (CBRL) Stock Down on Dividend Cut, Dismal View” [Yahoo Finance – 5/17/2024] Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, Inc. CBRL recently announced an update on its third and fourth quarter of fiscal 2024 financial results. The company expects lower-than-anticipated traffic to negatively impact its performance. Additionally, it announced plans to accelerate investments in organic growth by reallocating capital and reducing its quarterly dividend to $0.25 per share from $1.30. Following the announcements, the stock declined 10.3% in after-hours trading on May 16.I first wrote about this in June 2023 When I want a catfish dinner and some old time candy, I could not possibly care less about the sexual behaviors of the restaurant’s staff or patrons. I’d be grossed out if Cracker Barrel was devoting a month to celebrating heterosexual sex. It may not just be ESG pressure, there is every possibility that Cracker Barrel hired an Ivy League MBA to work some magic on its brand image, just like Bud Light did. Oh well, even if heartland American stop going to Cracker Barrel, maybe those lost customers can be replaced by coastal leftists who are all wrapped up in sexual identities. So long as Cracker Barrel pivots to serving sustainable, organic, locally sourced, GMO-free fare in hip, urban settings, there should be no problem replacing the customer base that is being run off.The customer backlash was immediate and devastating, as business in June and July 2023 plummeted. “Marketing misfires.” That’s one way of putting it. In a rare downbeat financial accounting, Cracker Barrel Old Country Stores acknowledged that its marketing and media efforts likely worsened a traffic drop-off during the quarter ended July 28. We had expected the traffic would improve in June and July with the onset of the summer travel season,” said [CEO] Cochran. “Unfortunately, this didn't materialize, and our restaurants and retail sales performance came in below our expectations. It kept getting worse, and Cracker Barrel’s CEO Sandy Cochran stepped down from her position before year’s end. “Cracker Barrel Sees 7.1% Dip In Traffic Amid Ongoing Decline” [Tasting Table – 12/02/2023] I have been to Cracker Barrel with gay relatives. They did not feel unwelcome. Sexualizing the place does not make it any more welcoming. I’m straight, but I don’t need cleavage or tight outfits on waitresses to make me feel welcome. I would be just as disgusted if Cracker Barrel had decided to become a Hee Haw Hooters in order to attract more straight men. In a Wall Street Journal article last week, it states that the new CEO, Julie Masino, is seeking “to update its image, menu and retail selection to be able to grow in an increasingly tough environment for restaurants.” No, the first thing Cracker Barrel needs to do is apologize for insulting its loyal customers by sexualizing the restaurant and for effectively smearing its loyal customers as being “unwelcoming” people. If it doesn’t, Cracker Barrel might as well go full woke. Perhaps it could hire Dylan Mulvaney away from Bud Light and have him cross-dress in Daisy Dukes while drinking an old-time pop from a rainbow-colored rocking chair. Alissa Heinersheid has experience using for Mr. Mulvaney for such promotions, and I believe she is available. Or maybe Cracker Barrel could run a Gillette-style ad accusing its legacy customers of being loathsome bigots and sexual predators. There is also plenty of opportunity to refresh the merchandise at Cracker Barrel. Instead of folksy wall art stating “Live, Laugh, Love” perhaps Cracker Barrel can sell signs stating “Hate has no home here” or a variety of “In this house we believe…” type wall art. Target can serve as a model for selling “alternative” products to children. If Cracker Barrel will not apologize for its “marketing misfires” it will never rebound. Get woke, go broke. All of the Cracker Barrel customers are obviously just victims of the right wing misinformation machine about inflation, and it's just further evidence that the federal government should ignore the old ideas of 'free ideas' and make sure that people aren't getting bad information. People go to Cracker Barrell, I'm guessing-or at least I did-because it was on the way somewhere else and the food was decent and it seemed sort of old fashioned, and the gift shop had some cute things, Rainbow chairs are ridiculous and would turn me right off. ++++ How carefully constructed that statement is. It's ambiguous in a pretty skillful way. What didn't materialize? Did the improvement in traffic not materialize on its own absent other indicators (e.g., poor business management), or did the improvement in traffic not materialize because the summer travel season didn't materialize (e.g., secular headwinds of which the company was a common victim among others)? For those who haven't yet read the sidebar entry (Former Top Baltimore Prosecutor Applies for Presidential Pardon), I highly recommend it.
The really interesting thing, aside from the sheer audacity of it all, is that they're crying about weaponization of the Justice system. In a letter to President Joe Biden on Thursday, the Congressional Black Caucus expressed support for her cause, repeating claims made by Mosby and her attorneys that the prosecution was politically motivated, As a nation that leads by example, our justice system must not be weaponized to prevent progress toward a more perfect union,” wrote Rep. Steven Horsford, a Nevada Democrat who chairs the caucus. We expect such excuses for black malfeasance from the CBC, of course, but this tells me that they're aware that many people now think DOJ has been weaponized by the Dems, and it's starting to hurt them. Naturally, their first instinct to is accuse us of what they're doing. Posted by: Archimedes at May 20, 2024 11:22 AM (CsUN+) 138

Pro-Gaza tent encampments on college lawns. Student-led protests in solidarity with Palestinians. Clashes with college administrators and police. In the eyes of Republicans, the pro-Palestinian protests that have spread across the nation’s college campuses are a dangerous display of disorder and antisemitism – and a political weapon to be used against President Joe Biden. The college protests have opened a new line of attack for Republicans against Biden and other Democrats heading into this fall’s elections. Republicans are looking to exploit the schism that has developed within the Democratic Party over the war in Gaza by pinning the campus unrest on Biden and the progressive left. Biden is ineffective and incapable of stopping the country from dissolving into chaos, they argue, while the party’s far-left flank is pushing lawlessness and anarchy. Roger C Carmel said in an interview that his friends call him "Roger C," but whenever he goes out to eat or shop, he'll see people look at him curiously, then break into a big smile and call out "Harry Mudd!" as if he were an old friend they hadn't seen in a long time. President Biden's commencement speech at Morehouse College on Sunday sparked backlash with critics describing one part of the president's speech as "disgusting" race baiting.
The president spoke at the HBCU's graduation ceremony on Sunday despite the threat of interrupting anti-Israel protesters. During his speech, he talked about George Floyd and how Black Americans face racism in the country. "You missed your high school graduation. You started college just as George Floyd was murdered, and there was a reckoning on race. It's natural to wonder if the 'democracy' you hear about actually works for you. What is democracy? That Black men are being killed in the street," Biden said. He continued, "What is democracy? The trail of broken promises still leaves Black communities behind. What is democracy? You have to be ten times better than anyone else to get a fair shot. Most of all, what does it mean? As you've heard before, to be a Black man who loves his country even if it doesn't love him back in equal measure." The New York Times must have access to some data showing that Biden is starting to pull away (or perhaps that Trump is falling behind), because their Saturday online “front page” is working hard to drag Biden down. This Year Could Be Different. And the top Opinion piece is: Why the Manhattan Trial Is Probably Helping Trump The NYT is definitely nervous that this race is turning into a boring and non-profitable landslide! And today it's Biden having trouble in traditionally blue Nevada. primary polls missed by outside the margin of error numbers. It seems actual voters don't agree with the polls. The voters must be defective because we keep hearing here that the polls are accurate. It will be a landslide and NYT will be on the losing side. I'm so sick of this shit. I hate contrivance, and places like Cracker Barrel exist solely on that basis. They are a totally corporate, totally contrived "old country store."
Way back in 1990 I was with a small group driving from Austin to College Station for a football game. We were drinking a lot, and someone needed to pee. Somewhere near Old Dime Box, we got off onto a really small rural road, and then suddenly this true old Texas general store appeared. Like Luckenbach but for real. We went in there to see if they had a bathroom, and it had everything Cracker Barrel aspires to be - old men in straw hats playing Moon and 42, a small stage with a dude on a guitar pickin a few notes, a small bar, a bunch of old timey merchandise, etc. It was one of the last of the real deals. I have looked and looked for that place since and never been able to find it, or even prove its existence. I went to a Cracker Barrel for the first time ever down in Kerrville a few weeks ago, and it was awful. So kitsch and so contrived, and the food sucked. Posted by: Victor Tango Kilo at May 20, 2024 11:46 AM Goes back to what I said at #68. The Marxist leftists who control corporate America do not have profit as their motivation. Their motivation is to infiltrate corporate America and then either use these institutions to destroy traditional American values and push their own Marxist values on society and culture (NBA, NFL, MLB, Disney, etc)... or... if that doesn't work, simply be satisfied they have destroyed an institution previously having traditional American values. I think the statements they make in favor of the degenerate freakazoids is simply to keep the ESG money coming in to keep the corporation afloat. Himself and I ate at a Cracker Barrel in Council Bluffs a couple of times years back. The food was fine, nothing to write home about, but fine. Wait staff was competent and food arrived still hot or cold depending on what had been ordered. There were so many restaurant choices in the Omaha area that we never went back.
What I didn't like was the hard "country" theme. I'm a city girl, born and raised in South Jersey suburbia. Maybe, when I was a kid, I might have felt more positive. I'm never around to comment on the book thread, so I submit this here for a well-deserved willowing:
"Nuclear War: A Scenario" by Annie Jacobsen (2024) brings us up to date on the status and capabilities of the strategic forces and C3 infrastructure of the US, USSR, and DPRK. Most of the book is a minute-to-minute timeline of a hypothetical all-out nuclear war scenario. I didn't find any errors of fact, but I have two quibbles. First, there's far too much hand-wringing about how awful it all is. Well, duh! Second, she uses sentence fragments as modifying clauses to their preceding sentences. She does it at least a hundred times, and it grates on this grammar pedant. Example: "US Stratcom HQ gets hit first. By an onslaught of SLBMs launched off the East Coast." Why her editor let her do that, I can't guess. Anyway, I read it all, with sustained interest. (Then my cat Tom barfed on it. No joke.) That is interesting. I know Cracker Barrel didn't choose June as Pride Month, but I wonder if they were counting on the summer influx as a way of boosting support for the rainbow campaign, through that same sort of ambiguity. i.e. forget about the the traditional summer boosts, SURELY it's our inclusive marketing that's drawing these new crowds, right. (....right?) Instead, though, they're having to appeal to a sort of vagueness to excuse the decline. I mean the numbers are obviously pretty bad, but I have to wonder just how much of an extra disaster the marketing was to have made the otherwise good times so bad. Of course Bidenomics is another disaster variable that also complicates things. Posted by: Simple Stevo at May 20, 2024 11:56 AM (Dgo06) 363

I think the jury is still out, as to whether DEI is going to win or not. Needless to say, businesses like this are going to suffer as a result of DEI being imposed on them, and everyone should know by now, these things are not decisions being made anywhere else but in the board room, and boards are being forced to do this by the big investors.
It's the same people, everywhere. They gain control, and start imposing, and the "ordinary" investor is overruled by anything the bigs are doing. And when the stock goes down? They don't care, this is long game stuff. Mom and pop investors might care, but the DEI crowd is going all in, peddle to the floor, balls to the wall on this. Get used to it. If it hasn't come to a business you love yet, it will. Posted by: BurtTC at May 20, 2024 11:58 AM (dGCAG) 375

Lake County, while having brutal at times winters, is nice, especially Fairport Harbor (gentrified a little bit). Small towns along the Ohio River have more good points than bad.

Posted by: Warai-otoko at May 20, 2024 11:29 AM (VoAdT) I parked at the pump on Saturday. Coming through B.C. with a loaded car trailer. There was no other place to park anyway, and the pump failed to give me a receipt, so I had to go in the store. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at May 20, 2024 12:36 PM (C4m9I) 525

Cracker Barrel:
You can’t convince me this all isn’t all a long-march conspiracy to specifically destroy Cracker Barrel because it caters to conservative Southern white people. The left hates Cracker Barrel. They’ve always hated Cracker Barrel. I remember them trying to slime the company for alleged racist hiring practices or customer service, but it didn’t click. Either way, this smells like yet another infiltrate-and-destroy operation like the Boy Scouts. Harrison Butker: That op-ed reminds me of that anecdote Film Threat shared that someone at the Disney all-hands meeting about JohnLasseter’s forced departure, when some woman stood up and exclaimed “Can we get a woman to run this place?” Every time the angry feminists get riled up, they then insist that the only justice is to replace the offender with one of them. (What was it I said about infiltrating and destroying organizations they spent years heaping untold amounts of hate on? Again, I’m old enough to remember when the left unconditionally hated both Disney and the NFL…and this was as recent as the ‘00s.) Apparently even the KC Chiefs cheerleaders are spouting off. Insufferable is an understatement.

26 I’m straight, but I don’t need cleavage or tight outfits on waitresses to make me feel welcome.
But it sure helps!!! Posted by: Sponge - F*ck Joe Biden at May 20, 2024 11:05 AM (Zz0t1) Back in the day when I frequented the Flying Saucer, especially in San Antonio, the wait staff consisted of attractive females (for the most part) in short plaid skirts and knee socks. (All above legal drinking age, so stop.). The place lost its charm when they stopped doing that, and including dudes on the wait staff. What the hell? Cracker Barrel has the best fried chicken of any chain restaurant anywhere, even better than CFA. Please don't die, Cracker Barrel! Repent! Repent!

Dang, we go to Cracker Barrel every time we visit my sister up in East Texas. I guess that's off the menu now.

Cracker barrel exists entirely on it's image of a small town diner, but bigger and as a chain. It's food is meh. Trashing that image deletes its entire reason d'etre.

Of course, i run a significant risk of a gun fight at Waffle House, but no woke shit, good food, and fast courteous service.

40 I was already boycotting Cracker Barrel for selling Chinese whirlygigs and thingamabobs. And crappy expensive fake home cooking.

I am from the home town of "The Cracker" Lebanon TN.
My mother.. was the decorator for the founder's home at one point! The restaurant was dying way before this debacle. The food quality has become horrible. The all the food that was supposed to be "Home Made" now sucks. This just puts a final nail in the coffin. It is a zombie it will walk for a while moaning "Sweeeeeet Teaaaa!" and then fall over into a bankruptcy coffin. Kind of like what KFC, Pizza Hut and Applebees will do..
