Democratic town furious over migrant shelter opening in neighborhood Residents in a New England town are fuming that they have not been consulted on plans to convert a former state prison into a tax-payer-funded migrant shelter for hundreds of people. The state is refurbishing Norfolk, Massachusetts' Bay State Correctional Center, a former minimum-security dorm-like facility, to accommodate migrants and homeless individuals who are currently holed up at Boston's Logan International Airport and are on the waitlist for an emergency shelter program. The facility is located on the grounds of Massachusetts Correctional Institution (MCI), a medium-security prison. Norfolk has a population of about 11,500 and voted heavily in favor of President Joe Biden in 2020. This should put a smile on your face as well. The UAW couldn't rig this election. Mercedes-Benz workers in Alabama have voted against union representation by the United Auto Workers, the National Labor Relations Board said Friday. The results are a blow to the UAW’s organizing efforts a month after the Detroit union won an organizing drive of roughly 4,330 Volkswagen plant workers in Tennessee. The Mercedes-Benz vote was expected to be more challenging for the union than the Volkswagen plant, where the union had already established a presence after two failed organizing drives in the past decade. But since I couldn't land a full-time job in my desired field — as a biotechnologist — I struggled to make ends meet.
- Also "In addition to a healthy growth rate projected by the BLS, biotechnologists also enjoy a higher annual median salary than most workers ($45,860 and $39,810, respectively)." So you go to school, take on $60,000 of debt, and you don't make as much as a high school kid that goes straight into working at a water plant. (also I'm assuming many if not most biotechnologist jobs are taken by H-1B visa workers) Way to go, chief. NYC Prosecutor Alvin Bragg has announced he will be filing charges against the home owner who maliciously and deliberately brutalized a peace-loving free-lance income-redistributionist in Florida.

"Mercedes-Benz workers in Alabama have voted against union representation by the United Auto Workers, the National Labor Relations Board said Friday.
The results are a blow to the UAW’s organizing efforts a month after the Detroit union won an organizing drive of roughly 4,330 Volkswagen plant workers in Tennessee. The Mercedes-Benz vote was expected to be more challenging for the union than the Volkswagen plant, where the union had already established a presence after two failed organizing drives in the past decade." I can clearly see the outflow boundary or gust front of such a rain/T-storm pass over. Barometer drops in front of it, the boom, spikes up (maybe .06" give or take), then drops off again, then rises steadily. Wind picks up right at that spiking point, and temp drops. The drop in temp during daylight can be dramatic. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at May 20, 2024 12:09 AM (w6EFb) 451

Back when I was a kid, there was some crop dusting that went on. Never much, but there was one guy around here who did it. This would've been back in the '70s. Farmers like my father would sometimes use him, when things got in a pinch (I think it was heavy rain one time, too wet to get in the field). I remember as a young boy watching him spray near our house. Powerful airplane. He'd swoop down, fly low, and head straight for the tree line, pulling up at the last possible moment, looked like. And we did that hard climb, you get hear the engine really sound off. Then he decided to try a helicopter.... Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at May 20, 2024 12:50 AM (w6EFb) 513

He got a helicopter crop duster. Boom mounted on the thing. He thought that was really the ticket. Then he crashed it. Well, a very hard, unintentional landing you might say. That was it for helicopters with him. Trouble was, he was a fixed wing "hot rod" airplane pilot, not a helicopter pilot, and things got outside of his experience. My take is the pilot was under the severe strain of "Get Thereitis."
Flew into thick fog...lost his bearings (otherwise known as "Spatial Disorientation)...Spatial disorientation is defined as the inability of a pilot to correctly interpret aircraft attitude, altitude or airspeed in relation to the Earth or other points of reference. (Because there are none.) Pilots will often try to correct a perceived "Brain" turn by turning opposite to correct which leads to loss of lift and a spiral down into ground all the while the pilot is turning to "correct" his perceived turn to the opposite. That's why they call it the "Death Spiral." Posted by: Nightwatch at May 20, 2024 01:15 AM (TDvv2) 534

Posted by: Nightwatch at May 20, 2024 01:15 AM (TDvv2) The ONLY "known" references in whiteout conditions, are there on the panel in front of the pilot. Artificial Horizon, Altimeter, Compass, Vertical Speed Indicator, Turn & Bank Indicator. Maintain "wings level", altitude and heading, and if fixed wing, airspeed. IGNORE the inner gyro. It's been proven....unreliable. Add some basic navigation for drift, and rising terrain, kick in a bit of math, and either ascend over terrain, or turn a 180 and return to point of origin, if possible. Either way, don't keep making things worse by flying into more difficult situations. I just heard that song on the radio the other day. But the Jack Pine Rallies were... brutal. Only is... you have been trained to focus on your instruments in these conditions...It's called an IFR rating which means you've been trained to fly by your cockpit instruments..(hopefully they are the best suites available) If you are a visual VFR rated pilot only...well then, flying into ICM otherwise known as clouds. storms, or fog...your pretty much fucked unless you can quickly escape back into clear air. Nightwatch. You're nominally correct, of course.
Unless, one studied the requisite instruments thoroughly wove even basic flight training, as to make one as familiar with them as tying their shoes. I think even the Basic Private License should result in ANY pilot so licensed, to be able to at least maintain level, heading and altitude, regardless of outside reference, right from the start. No, I don't mean IFR, as in intercepting localizers and working the NAV radios, etc. Let alone IFR so as to transit TCA through all their speed and altitude tiers. Just enough instrument knowledge and a bit of hood time, as to keep a pilot from going pure idiot, in the least bit of scud running under the clouds. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at May 20, 2024 01:41 AM (e6UQI) 547
I've read about that. You have to train yourself to trust your instruments. Don't pay any attention to what you think your attitude is, use your instruments. And that's hard to do. Rush Limbaugh (pbuh), talked about that years ago, I think in reference to JFK, Jr's crash. I think they decided he got disoriented and just flew the plane right into the water. One of Rush's buddies refused to believe any one could do that, not know which way was up. They were talking about this on Rush's plane. The pilot got that guy up in the cockpit, put him in the "jumpseat". Then he proceeded to do some mild maneuvers, and this was after dark. Nothing too much, just some climbs and dives and turns, enough to mess with that guy's internal inner ear sense of up and down. He asked the guy, okay, what are we doing? Guy said we're climbing. Nope, we're headed straight for the ground, the pilot showed. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at May 20, 2024 01:41 AM (w6EFb) 548

Fully agreed, and wise policy. But even a 40 hr. Private should be able to maintain stability, return to point of origin if required or feasible, and at worst, be able to follow ATC vectors to a (hopefully) clear enough runway to safely put 'er down. A Private Pilot's License, if for VFR only, should not leave a pilot HELPLESS, at the slightest blush of fog or lowering ceiling. Four Hours of Dual Time spent in familiarizing a pilot with the instruments as I've described them, with 90 of those minutes being under the hood. That'll be a pilot that might not become an automatic statistic. Which is my ONLY point in the discussion. Don't set the VFR pilot up as an instant victim, just add scud, and mix. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at May 20, 2024 01:46 AM (e6UQI) 552

That's right, organized, outdoor, single track enduro was like that until the mid seventies. ISDE changed too, most of it due to enviro-whiners. We had many miles of bootleg single track trail until the 2020 north complex fire destroyed the western slope, Plumas national forest - and our trails with it - and the irony being USFS used to badger us about spark arresters. Posted by: 13times at May 20, 2024 01:52 AM (J3ppD) 553
546 ( now losing more minutes)
The essence of a IFR rating is the ability of the pilot to shake off neurological inputs based on the loss of all visual references and to focus on the electronic inputs from the instruments to guide the flying. In other words, the pilot denies neurological inputs and counteracts this with instrument readings to instruct his flying AT THAT MOMENT and through the flight. Ok.... 13times. My motorcycle career in the mid '70s, was my first Hodaka Ace 100 (not the later 125), and my first street bike was a Suzuki Titan 500 twin.
I was far too young and years away from funds enough to have a truck, an Enduro bike, and the cost of going to and competing in...much of anything. How I got to the races? Volunteer crew. Which meant, I got to log in no few bootleg hours, behind the number plate of a friend too tired to ride. No points earned or awarded, but I did learn to ride far more skillfully than I would've, otherwise. A couple years of riding in the dirt, has great advantages for handling a bike on the pavement. Never know when a bit mud might lurk further out from the gutters! I'm not arguing against you, Nightwatch.
I just don't think the Private Pilot is well served with ZERO "introduction" to Instruments, for those un-anticipated situations. I think my Four Hour "taste" of things, would dispel a lot of fear or barriers for new pilots to go on and PURSUE their Instrument Rating. Danger? Yeah, a new VFR stick getting cocky, and thinking they "can handle it". I'll admit that risk. But there should not be a Hard Barrier between the nearly graduated VFR Pilot, and the ones having acquired sufficient hours to actually begin, FORMAL IFR training. Put some safety margin in there for the new pilot, is all I'm suggesting. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at May 20, 2024 02:05 AM (e6UQI) 558

He won the western super-senior that year. A buddy and I went halves on a clapped-out 1972? 74? 125 Honda Elsinore. His dad was a master mechanic.. so yeah. 1/2" rebar, through hole between frame and engine, as close to the footpeg mounts, as possible. Hose clamps. The original footpegs were SO long ago, gone. And you've not lived, until your "shifter" is a set of vice grips clamped onto the gear selector shaft, poking out of the engine cases. Dirt bikes for the Dirt Poor. It's all we had, then.
