This table is a straight year-over-year comparison. In the most recent report, it was April of 2023 vs April of 2024. These are still BLS numbers and they are decreasingly reliable, but the methodology used to derive those numbers is consistent and so internal comparisons are both possible and useful. What does this table tell us? There are several data points in the table, but some stand out.Domestic vs Foreign Labor Participation Rate

The domestic civilian non-institutional working-age population went from 220.115 million in April of last year to 219.976 million this year. The foreign number went from 46.328 million last year to 48.089 million this year - a staggering 3.8% increase in a single year.
How are remote jobs given to people in India and Canada and Brazil and Mexico factored into all these job reports? For example, the auto industry has replaced direct hire American workers with contract hire remote workers in India, Canada, Brazil and Mexico. There is also the case of someone like me who was fired as a direct employee, but I was able to go back to my old position as a contract worker on $25k less salary. How is that factored into the job reports? Posted by: Clyde Shelton at May 08, 2024 11:03 AM (P5BPp) 10

Thirty years ago we were all worried about the number of East European truck drivers who couldn't speak English. There are lots of big trucks in Europe now (compared to, say, the 60's), and Romanians, Bulgarians, etc, dominated the trade for a while.
There's now a large subculture of drivers from the various 'Stans, because they've also been at it awhile. We have an Uzbek truckers' cafe out by the Turnpike. Good kebab, but the prayer room is a little unsettling. Used to be the drive-thru. I see that we're fixated on putative 'Mexicans' though (they aren't), so go right ahead. @8 at the typical commercial grid usage, half a ton of coal would charge a Tesla 3 for a year. You do have to pay for the conversion, of course. You can't just shovel it in.
Commercial power plants, with their pulverizers and air-jet combustion, are a very efficient use of coal. You can't get that kind of mileage in a stove, for instance. Posted by: Way, Way Downriver at May 08, 2024 11:09 AM (zdLoL) You have to account for transmission losses, though, and for losses in the charger itself, and for the energy lost as heat in both the charge and discharge cycle of the batteries. I've never said nothing has changed.
I've said that courts allowed Democrats to break existing law in 2020 and 2022 at a national scale and that new laws will not change that basic, underlying reality that the courts were in on the steal making law effectively meaningless in trying to untangle the web of corruption that has become our election mechanism. The biggest thing that has changed is that millions more people now know the 2020 election was stolen and there are real problems with how elections are being run in many states. You don't get change unless enough people understand there is a problem. Just because people in this relatively small group understand the problems doesn't mean the country as a whole did. It was out in the open. People showed up to DC to protest the whole thing. You might remember it. And then they did it again in 2022. I sort of think the whole process by which we put people in government, politicians, judges, etc. is broken. A good system would weed out the compromised and corrupt and keep it that way.
Fixing that before presuming people interested in being in government would be honest would be worthwhile. What to do with the current government is really another problem. I presume most would want some form of government, perhaps not the current one. So, it's really a two-edged problem... IMO. Posted by: Martini Farmer at May 08, 2024 11:38 AM (Q4IgG) 157

But what we don’t know and no one can control us what volume of real voters will show up…. The steal in 2020 was all out and barely dragged Brandon over the line. If they want to pull it off this time it’ll be more difficult… and the wild card remains a mostly passive and ignorant population. Sometimes I’m optimistic but more often pessimistic. But…. There was no limit to the fraud in 2020. Mail in balloting made sure of that.
Yes, they could take a 60-40 election the other way and steal it now. Up the ballots in CA and NY to overcome the popular vote. Steal the vote in 6 urban centers in "purple" states. How many millions of ballots does that represent? Remember, in the 2022 midterm, the PA SoS sent out 250,000 illegal, unasked for mail-in-ballots to be cured. The estimated number of fake ballots in PA alone for 2020 was 1 million. Posted by: TheJamesMadison, fighting kaiju with Ishiro Honda at May 08, 2024 11:36 AM And knowing that, we now have to look at Texas, which is ripe to be rigged and stolen. It went from solid red to purple within 2 election cycles. +1.2mil (+16%) in 2012 to +807k (+9%) in 2016 to +631k (+6%) in 2020. Anyone who thinks the Deep State is not planning to steal Texas is naive. They can easily make up 631k vote difference with illegal alien votes. Posted by: brak at May 08, 2024 11:40 AM (25k9m) City of Houston. Drive anywhere, walk on any sidewalk, smell weed. I step outside my house in the burbs, and smell weed. People have been sold this weed is harmless horseshit, in large part because decriminalizing means no more reasonable suspicion to detain based on the odor, so black people are stopped less. That's the real reason for Houston's de facto decriminalization. Couple years ago, guy took an exit near me at 80+, jumped a curb Dukes of Hazzard style and killed a teen girl who was sitting in a parked car eating an ice cream cone. This is the future. As Ace might say, you're going to enjoy decriminalization, but you aren't going to enjoy it much. Posted by: Omelates at May 08, 2024 11:50 AM (cBvpj) 218

Not that I'm accusing her of having charged Trump. Not then. Later. It was $130,000 later. And Cohen paid it. For consideration for something that didn't happen and Cohen made bank delivering the moolah. Notice how neither side discussed the mechanics of how she got paid. Well just the big money one. Anyone who thinks the Deep State is not planning to steal Texas is naive. They can easily make up 631k vote difference with illegal alien votes. Originalists Insist We Live as the Constitution Intended. I Tried It for a Year!
I often wonder how this kind of thing sounds to The Mushy Middle. Posted by: Oddbob The middle won't hear. The article was long, boring and pointless. Let me distill for you: ...hardcore originalist Justice Clarence Thomas says the Constitution’s “equal protection” does not apply to gay marriage. The phrase appears in the 14th Amendment, which was ratified in 1868, an era when the average American would never have conceived of gay marriage... Originalists are not completely frozen in time...the prohibition against unreasonable searches and seizures, originally meant to stop the constable banging on your door in 1787, now applies to the government snooping through the contents of your smartphone. It’s the same idea, even though the execution of the idea has necessarily changed with time. He understands!? Another charge against originalists is that judges apply the theory inconsistently...a right can be stretched to the breaking point. Originalists say the “right to bear arms” covers flintlock muskets as well as AR-15s, even though these two objects are vastly different. No. Posted by: Intercepted Slate.com Transmissions brought by the Intrepid AoS Liaison at May 08, 2024 12:00 PM (JCZqz) 265

Lost primaries, retired, etc. 5) they lost the RNC leadership and, worse, near 200 of their best embedded operators 6) none of them will get jobs in a Trump administration this time Posted by: People's Hippo Voice at May 08, 2024 12:14 PM (g9W3m) 293

This is probably the best blog for self correcting inaccurate or false information by its commenters.

287 By the end of The Meat Puppets first term, we will have added around 16M military aged adults to our population, that's lot of additional people to take care of.
My prediction for the future: Pain. Posted by: Thomas Bender at May 08, 2024 12:11 PM (XV/Pl) Illegal immigration is only bad if military aged adults get in, amirite? Posted by: Catch Thirty-Thr33 at May 08, 2024 12:18 PM (Ds3Rc) 296

Hate to be a downer on this, Jack, but why wouldn't the judge if case goes to appeal be any less biased and corrupt than Merchan is?
Posted by: FenelonSpoke at May 08, 2024 12:02 PM (XkYcA) Hi Fen - if I may gently answer this - Merchan is under District 1 (not 2, Whig) and I have heard from a couple of people that the District 1 appellate Judge (a liberal lady to be sure) is unhappy with Merchan's violations of the procedural rules assigned to lower courts (supreme court level in NYS. for some reason)...and will recommend him for Judicial conduct review for it...can't have people go off the reservation - they don't care about Trump, but they care about order in the lower courts...
