Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Quick HitsFrench President Emmanuel Macron has reaffirmed his position that the possibility of sending ground troops into Ukraine cannot be ruled out. "I'm not ruling anything out, because we are facing someone who is not ruling anything out," Macron said in an interview with The Economist published Thursday. He added that if Russia was to "break through the front lines" in Ukraine and Kyiv requested troops, "we would legitimately have to ask ourselves this question." Macron's comments double down on remarks he made in February in which he said the deployment of Western troops in Ukraine could not be "ruled out," which prompted a direct warning from Moscow's Defense Ministry. "The U Chicago Popular University For Gaza demands that you, Chicago, divest from the Gaza genocide," the protester told the university. "We demand that you, Chicago, divest from weapons manufacturers arming Israel and its partnerships with militarized Israeli universities, and cut ties with the Israel Institute. We also demand that you, Chicago, divest from all interrelated forces of death and violence into which it is currently complicit, especially fossil fuel production, UCPD and construction projects that fuel South Side displacement." ... (skipping a bit) "The U Chicago Popular University for Gaza demands repair of the harm caused by the university. We demand that you, Chicago, repair the harm it has caused in Palestine, Chicago and beyond," she continued. "This includes explicitly acknowledging such harm as well as implementing a communally accountable program of reparation. More specifically, it includes 1. recognizing Israel's genocide and scholasticide in Palestine and supporting Birzeit University's initiative to rebuild Gazan higher education. 2. signing the UN Principles for Responsible Investment. 3. disbanding UCPD and redirecting funds to South Side community-based products. 4. allocating funds to annual rental assistance and local schools, expanding employer-assisted housing, funding grants for long-term affordable housing, and halting expansion on the South Side. 5. Muscle Mass: F. See me after class. Cops finally shut down the increasingly violent UCLA "protests." The Mostly Peaceful Protesters attacked cops, most peacefully, of course. The pro-Hamas demonstrations at UCLA have been violent, much more so than on other campuses. At times it can most accurately be described as riots that have broken out. It's inexcusable that the police were not brought in after the riot on Tuesday, which injured more than 20 people. UCLA has been slow to respond to the escalating violence. On Tuesday the university declared the encampment unlawful. The protesters chanted "KKK" at police who monitored the activity on campus. The Hamas supporters yelled that they were not afraid of the police. They planned to fight back. There were reports on Wednesday that Jewish students began fighting back. Maybe that is what led up to the police moving in on the encampment. The university had to finally act. Outside agitators have been blamed for some of the violence. Protesters liked arms and made a line to keep the police away from the tents in the encampment. Faculty members and university staff joined the students in their demonstration. An overwhelming show of force by police arrived to deal with the situation. As we have seen with other demonstrations, it's the only way to get the job done. The demonstrators have no respect for law enforcement. As I watch what is unfolding, LAPD is arresting protesters one by one. They are being handcuffed with zip ties and led away. It's mostly peaceful and calm. Many protesters are wearing hard hats and protective goggles. They sprayed police with fire extinguishers. Police essentially corralled the protestors, many into the library, to keep order and make arrests easier. At UCLA, protesters -- a lot of woke women here -- cry and even hyperventilate as they're arrested. They especially don't like the police taking off their dirty masks for the cameras.

The new city, St. George, will have nearly 100,000 people, making it one of the state’s largest cities in population. “This is the culmination of citizens exercising their constitutional rights,” Andrew Murrell, a leader of the effort to create the city, said in a statement, adding, “Now we begin the process of delivering on our promises of a better city.” Posted by: andycanuck (vtyCZ) at May 02, 2024 06:39 PM (vtyCZ) 87
I was a 3L law student at Boalt Hall (UC Berkeley). It was the end of the spring term and we were in the middle of exam week. Then down in Los Angeles Sirhan B. Sirhan shot and killed Bobby Kennedy. I had an examination the next morning. The professor came in and told the class that if anyone was too upset over the shooting death of Bobby Kennedy they didn't have to take the exam--and he'd figure out some grade but wouldn't fail anybody.
I figured screw that. I lot of things would or could upset me in my professional life and my future clients would expect me to perform regardless. So I took the exam. Tnese little snowflakes and snotty scotties on the Columbia Law Review need to grow an intellectual pair. Posted by: Comanche Voter at May 02, 2024 06:40 PM (cB7nX) 88

I'm not a big Ukraine War fan, but I label this as mostly false. I've heard from people very familiar with war and especially some arty guys, and the systems they are now moving in, oddly some from France, in preparation for Purim's spring offensive, are going to do a lot to not only stop the Russians but probably moves them out in places like Crimea. I'm not sure, but I think it's quite possible, Russia isn't TRYING to "break through" Ukrainian lines. Pretty sure, if they were, they would have long ago broken through. Posted by: BurtTC at May 02, 2024 06:35 PM (dGCAG) One thing this war has shown is that mass movement gets difficult when satellites can see everything real time and missiles and arty is very accurate. And drones can drop a grenade in your foxhole. Men have to be dispersed and have safe places to duck into to survive. A breakthrough column of trucks/APCs gets hit hard once it is spotted. The Russians are using small groups moving dispersed. When they find an enemy group, it is shelled, droned, or fuel air bombed until it quits shooting back. So to me I think that the problems of "big arrow" offensives these days don't have a good answer. But, also, as you say Russia doesn't want a quick win, it wants to punish the Ukranian army. Right now, they do seem to be quickly grabbing fields a few at a time in a day, then storming the next village over a few more. Ukr seems to be able to do little to change this, and Russia is enlarging the areas of the line they do this. Posted by: Oldcat at May 02, 2024 06:55 PM (eoQWY) 148

I work with people who were sexually abused every day, all day.
You know who never shows up in my office? Guys who were 15 when hot 26 year old were suxing them off. Posted by: BurtTC ======== Too many people make light of it in society like lame hot for teacher crap--just like the percentage of males getting raped and sexually assaulted never go to counseling nor do they report it as a crime. One of the stupidest things that a lot of folks laugh about is sexual assault of people in prison. Most of them end up coming out on the street and their experience in prison does not make them a better person. I had to deal in resolving issues for others at a university involving sexual misconduct from power relationship differentials and it was bad enough. It will be worse for kids just like the ones that claimed the kid that LeTourneau made a daddy at a young age was just fine. Pair bonding is a thing and sexual molestation at early ages screws it up due to imprinting. Society treating it as nothing is worse. Posted by: whig at May 02, 2024 06:56 PM (peJ7P) 153

Posted by: BurtTC at May 02, 2024 06:35 PM Russia wins just by being a threat, that's called a "persisting" strategy. Hannibal did the same thing in the Punic wars with Rome. He invaded their Empire but he couldn't attack and sack Rome because he lacked heavy siege equipment and specialized troops. But he could and did defeat any army that Rome sent into the field against him. It worked for some years and Rome lost tens of thousands of soldiers trying to defeat him. Russia is pretty much in the same position, they win just by being on enemy soil. Posted by: Mister Scott (Formerly GWS) at May 02, 2024 06:56 PM (QNSds) 154

Hopefully, Chancellor Boyce will reflect the same spirit. There's some indication that he will from the video, as the protestors are blocked within one narrow portion of the Grove that won't really impede any normal students' freedom of movement, and nothing really vital to campus function is made unreachable.

Too many people make light of it in society like lame hot for teacher crap--just like the percentage of males getting raped and sexually assaulted never go to counseling nor do they report it as a crime.
Posted by: whig at May 02, 2024 06:56 PM (peJ7P) Don't conflate the two, these are very different things. You don't have to believe me, but this is an area of expertise for me. It's very very VERY difficult for a good looking adult woman to "sexually assault" a mid to late teen boy. Sorry, that's just biology. And psychology bears it out. These events do NOT cause lasting problems for these teenage boys. Change the dynamics a little, and maybe it does. Make the boy pre-teen, and it's very different. Make the perp male, and it's VERY different. But the vast majority of teenage boys are not mentally anguished because a good looking female was willing to have sex with them. Sorry, they just aren't. Part of the problem is we've been fighting CI for so long we've forgotten how to execute a real war on the battlefield. Fortunately so have the Russians. Their hold on territory is temporary and it's frankly only been longer because the arty wasn't in place. Now those longer range systems are coming online and more is on the way. That will probably move the Russians back again, especially when they stretch their lines again in their spring offensive. They have only been able to hold that line due to a lack of supply. But a lot of the 155 and ATACMS are now coming back into the units. The latter will especially give them an advantage due to the stand-off distance. Along with some of the more sophisticated SAM that are moving in, it will be interesting to see what happens when Putin makes his predicable offensive move. It's going to test his ability to take casualties, because that movement will cost a lot. I think you have to draw a distinction between a one-off boink and an ongoing, controlling relationship.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon ------- Pretty much first sexual experiences are pretty powerful for a lot of people just like the first hit of a drug is for others and often that first hit is enough to mess some folks up. Others, it might take several events in sequence. Some may show not much reaction externally at all and some of that depends on culture, power relationships, consent, and so on. Far too many get screwed up in life from trying to repeat that first 'hit' of drugs, alcohol, sex, violence,or gambling. Others are imprinted by other events but tell me honest data about someone's childhood, and I can give you better than track odds what might happen. One of the more hideous tasks that I had to once undertake for research was Pre Sentencing Investigatory reports for criminals and later case reviews of those facing the death penalty. You kinda figure out how a lot of folks ended up the way they were but a few had every advantage etc. in life and took a bad turn and often that turn was fairly inexplicable by preceding events. I have no dog in this fight btw, I think it's basically a stalemate that will continue to cost both sides greatly and test their appetite for attrition.
Posted by: Marcus T at May 02, 2024 07:19 PM (n2HqC) It is attrition, yes, but supply is no problem for Russia. They have built a railroad across the land bridge line to Crimea, and their factories are humming. I have heard nothing about any significant shell deliveries arriving, just EU countries not being able to buy any on the world market. Also with the air defense broken down, increased range won't matter so much when aircraft can operate forward with no danger and take out gun platforms. Russian counterbattery is an emphasis. Yesterday, Ukraine killed 1,030 soldiers, destroyed 20 tanks, 29 APVs, 20 artillery systems, 4 air defense systems, and 49 trucks. All this shit is coming from storage, and the storage is almost bare. For example, they can build maybe 500 tanks a year. That is 42 per month - about as much as they lose every two days. They started the war with 20,000 tanks -4,000 active and 16,000 in storage. They have, maybe, 2,000 left. Ukraine thinks it might be less - more like 800 functional. Couple of months, tops, they are out of tanks. Same is true for everything else they are using. This summer Russia will start running out...of everything. Fuel, trucks, trains, ships, planes, soldiers, tanks...everything. IMHO. Assuming Ukraine can hang on, maybe another six months, they win. How things change. A lot of 15 year olds a hundred years ago lost their virginity at cathouses. And girls getting married at 15 was not uncommon.
Posted by: polynikes ------ A lot of that age of marriage was distorted in genealogy circles because of certain ways that early data was recorded. You find women in the census getting younger and younger over the years in each census for example despite being the same person. Another common error was induced because genealogists often had to guesstimate to the nearest decade or so. What I found in some cases going back about 500 to 1000 years on some trees is that during unsettled times, you had younger ages of marriage and childbearing but other times it lengthened. Depended on social and economic class as well. Going way back, you start getting into betrothed marriages and the like that often waited until puberty (which struck later than today in many cases) to be consummated. Teens certainly but even then marriage at 15 was unusual for males unless property/aristocracy arranged marriages were involved. Females, it gets complicated with the consummation issue and we know more about the elites than we do about the peasants. Posted by: whig at May 02, 2024 07:44 PM (peJ7P) 311

Good think Ukraine isn't running out of troll farms either!

Think about the effect of single HE equipped drones striking certain high visibility persons in any organization.
Posted by: CrotchetyOldJarhead Think they are already using drones to drop one hand grenade over in Ukraine and in the Middle East. Drones are one of those game changing events that are close to how fast airplane tech advanced in the First World War. Ukraine has become a proving ground for a lot of tech and observation of its use in warfare including EW, hacking, and drones. Posted by: whig at May 02, 2024 07:47 PM (peJ7P) 314
"This summer Russia will start running out...of everything. Fuel, trucks, trains, ships, planes, soldiers, tanks...everything. IMHO. Assuming Ukraine can hang on, maybe another six months, they win.

hmmm...26 year old female. 15 year old boy. Legally it's rape and how do you justify rape by anyone. If you are going to justify this female raping the boy then you also need to justify the 26 year old male raping a 15 year old girl.

Columbia Law Review student letter:
"The violence we witnessed last night has irrevocably shaken many of us on the Review." "Irrevocably." Well, then, nothing to do. Put that on their resumes; they are not hireable. Next. Posted by: m at May 03, 2024 02:45 AM (o3SCB) 317
98 >>>French president Emmanuel Macron says he'll only send troops to fight the Russians in Ukraine if the Russians break through the Ukranian lines. Which of course they will almost certainly do, so he's basically promising to send troops to Ukraine, when Ukraine's troops can no longer even hold Russia off.
-------------------- Indo China circa 1958? Posted by: Braenyard at May 02, 2024 06:24 PM (lCWOD) Supposedly France has a brigade to send. A brigade can hold a front of about 2 km in WWII. The fronts in Ukraine are hundreds of km long, and there is about as much front that is not covered by many troops. What will this French unit do when the Russians just pass it right by?
