Workers installing a light pole in Missouri dug into a fiber cable and cut off 911 services in Nebraska - I forgot Missouri has a border with Nebraska, South Dakota, which borders on Nebraska, and, somehow, Nevada. (AP News)

Nevada is three states away from Missouri three different ways, and routing your emergency calls that distance to a single service provider is not the way I personally would choose to set things up.

I've seen worse things - like the time a mail server couldn't send emails more than 500 miles - but not many.

Only downside is that it costs $1500, which also used to be a lot.
I've started setting up my new laptop. It's a bit involved because I'm swapping out the 512GB SSD for a 2TB one, which means I have to create a recovery drive, and for some reason it really didn't want to do that with the first USB stick I gave it.

Screen is great, keyboard is fine, speakers are, well, laptop speakers. Performance seems to be pretty good. The CPU is a Ryzen 7730U with a top speed of 4.5GHz, and I saw it hitting 4.3GHz while I was doing Windows updates.

That's a problem I have with my current laptop; it's supposed to reach 4.7GHz but I've never seen it exceed 3.6.

Oh, and I did the Shift-F10 / oobe\bypassnro trick to set up Windows without a Microsoft login, and it worked just fine.

A tree came down in my 'hood and a single fiber strand was broken, the one for my home. Some technician showed up, dropped some fancy suitcase down in the street, opened it up, put on some fancy optics, and fixed it somehow. It was a slow tedious process for just one strand.

Tucker Carlson touched on something kinda tech related; that our politicians are all terrified that some 'deep state' types will infect their computer with kiddy porn. Just how tough would it be to hack into someones computer, create a virtually undetectable directory, and fill it with images?

It's why I've sworn if ever on a jury with an issue like that I'm going to be very likely to hang the jury with a not guilty. Unless there's a whole lot of other evidence collaborating such a proclivity.

31 Yesterday I dropped Miss Linda off at her Earf Day sidewalk sale, flashed out to the 'burbs to hit the library and the jeweler to get a new strap for one of my watches and to have the bracelet on another sized, then zipped back, all in about two hours. L. did not have much luck at the sale, found some slacks and a beaded necklace, but she was disappointed in the whole setup. (I coulda told her that.)

Well, at least the funds are supposed to benefit animal charities and the like, so there's that. And the roads I took out to the suburb and back were (strangely for here) reasonably paved, so I had the fun of piloting the Buick -- and of plotting my route to avoid doubling back or taking wasteful paths.

35 Had a lovely time yesterday with spouse going to a live performance of The Messiah at a church. They had people singing who were in the church choir but also professional vocalists. They also broadcast on the walls paintings by various Christian college students from around the world which were quite interesting. It was followed by a lovely reception with very nice food.

However big, with as good a passive defense as needed, such that Gazan women and children simply can't cross, and IDF doesn't have to actively oppose such crossings. Such a DMZ creates a "kill zone" that then prevents groups of Gazan Men creating another October 7.

Along with that, and the former is useless unless the latter is also done - Israel needs to swallow the pain of shutting down the cheap labor from Gaza. Totally remove contact between Israel and Gaza. No more power supply, no more employment. Then turn their backs while whatever happens in Gaza stays in Gaza.

And that's no worse than the world saying Israel must accept a certain casualty count. Besides, the world follows a news cycle as well. They'll bitch for about two weeks, and maybe feed the Gazans themselves. Then they'll move onto something else.

Shut off immigration, trade, and services - just like every other Arab country that borders Gaza. Emphasize at every opportunity that they are doing exactly that - and then weather the storm. At worst - concerned countries start sending direct aid to Gaza. Until they, too, get tired of dealing with the Gazans.

See how this works ? Its not like Israel is dealing with an otherwise charming enemy. It's in Israel's best interest for EVERYONE to get a taste of Gaza. Hell, even import a few thousand.

In part, because Israel doesn't make it clear. Most idiots still consider Gaza part of Israel - imagine if the United States walled off California. And Israel makes this perception worse by engaging in some supply of services as well as using the cheap labor.

Cut off all ties. Push them back - they have the right to do that after 10/7. Then build that big, beautiful wall - in whatever form it takes - and let nature take it's course. Wash their hands of the Gazans.

In many ways, military theory until the turn of the century has been just that. How to make more fence, or a stronger fence.

This problem, for Israel, gets easier even without my DMZ. Cut the length of Gaza in half - which will include figuring out what to do with the shell of Gaza City - and then shut movement down in or out. A hard border.

Operationally ? Look at all that border south of Gaza. With the Gaza Strip cut in half ? The remaining bulge isn't much of an advantage, in the big scheme, in the next theoretical Arab / Israeli War. Not when you look at every other salient on the map - many of which Israel itself willingly maintains.

They sure did, and I'm convinced they also came up with a way of duelling with it. Hosts did not provide tableware. The two-tined fork and its matching knife (prolly with those little Misericordia squiggles) were carried in a holster. I could email my friend working at the Pentagon all the way across the country instantly but kept missing squadron meetings because the notification would show up after the meeting was over! It wasn't even a one time thing, this was the state of affairs for weeks. I don't even understand how that can happen.
