8 Gotta love a last supper. Though some of the disciples in this version are FUGLY. Pieter either couldn't afford good models or needed to run with a better crowd.

9 Seems kind of fussy; I prefer other paintings of the Last Supper but the little scene through the window is nice.

24 Jesus looks like he'd rather be at the dentist. (And first-century Roman dentistry was probably not nice.)

The table is swarmed by intriguing characters. The womean at the far left in red, for instance, and the meth addict-looking woman (?) on Jesus' left hand. And bald guy two seats to Jesus' right looks like one of the Talosians from Trek. How recent is this painting?

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 22, 2024 09:36 AM (J2vNu)

25 What's with the loaf, precariously overhanging the table edge, right in front of Jesus (and above the fighting dogs)? Must be some kind of symbolism...

Posted by: Moron Analyst at April 22, 2024 09:37 AM (JCZqz)

26 An interesting character study. Each person has a personality. The guy on the very end left is my favorite. He just wants to eat his meal but got stuck next to the guy that talks constantly.

34 This is from 1527??? I mean, the style says Renaissance, but I'd never have thought the general irreverence of it would be found at that time period.

98 Quite obviously inspired by Leonardo's Last Supper; but it makes sense in the day. Leonardo's work was a huge fresco on a wall that only those visiting Milan could see; according to the Wiki stub, van Aelst and his assistants made and sold at least 45 versions of this last supper to his patrons. They added even more Christian iconography to the work in the scene through the window (showing Jesus' entry into Jerusalem) and the large medallions hanging on the walls.

114 I'm not Kris, but
I suspect this is a case of using the Last Supper as an excuse for virtuoso painting.
As in the landscape, the stained glass window, the bronze medallions on the wall, and the perfect perspective.
Plus the variations in the Apostles. (not the cast of The Chosen by any means)
The balance of the composition has a classical feel.
Notice the placement of the red robes across the mid-line.

This is the moment Christ announces His betrayal. The figure rising from his seat is Judas (traditionally a ginger). The figure on the left is probably a servant.
As for the fat one in the red robe, I got nothin'

118 Watched a series on Amazon called Drive Through History on the Gospels. Aside from the narrator's apparent need to interject "funny" asides into many episodes, it was really helpful to have a better perspective on how very compact the last week of Jesus' life was. It seems everything -- the Triumphal Entry, the Upper Room, the Mount of Olives, Golgotha -- they're all a couple hundred yards from each other.

121 I know some of y'all think this is sacrilegious, too busy, irreverent, etc. but why? I'd imagine there was a very human side of the apostles as well. Jesus alone has a heavy heart.

"Lamb" by Christopher Moore is very irreverent and talks about the life of Christ as a child. It is fiction, of course, but focuses on Christ as a friend to his buddy Biff (I think) and how He travels the known world seeking lessons and inspiration. It is funny at times. But at the end, when Chris is hanging on a cross, the irreverence died and the picture painted by the author was poignant. It made me cry.

Jesus was Man and God. His friends were men. I'd imagine there was chaos involved with a bunch of friends at a party with booze on a high holiday.

125 Hillary Clinton Was Cheated. The crux of this case (Stormy Daniels), which the MSM wants to overlook, is that if the whole sordid affair was made public, Trump would have probably lost.

Not to mention the LIE dropped a few days before the election. That lie was dropped that an FBI (?) investigation was finding ample reason to charge Hillary Clinton with some crimes.

Comey's was the heaviest thumb on the scale. People knew what Trump was by then. Access Hollywood had been out for months. Comey fucked us big time & I practically puked when he wrote that "he eats your soul" commentary. Fuck you, James Comey.

It isn't about Hillary Clinton. No one is entitled to be president. But the American people ARE entitled to a president chosen without llegal election interference.

Trump cultist never elected him and never will. it's the independents that switch back and forth who elected him.

"Kosher" != "Parve" != "Kosher for Passover"

"Kosher for Passover" is very restrictive, and the famous Jewish wines (MD and Manischewitz) are "Kosher for Passover." I don't know what the technical distinction is with wine that makes it specifically Passover-compliant. I suspect it has something to do with the treatment of yeast. Fermentation depends on yeast, and yeast is a leavening agent and leavening agents are forbidden on Passover.

I don't know if there is a historical difference in Passover wine vs. non-Passover wine, or what the distinctions are.

175 Wow. Did not know that.

To make wine kosher, the following requirements must be met:
The wine must be made under the supervision of a rabbi.
The wine must contain only kosher ingredients, including yeast and fining agents.
The wine must be processed using equipment rabbinically certified to make kosher wines.
No preservatives or artificial colors may be added.
The wine must be subject to a very stringent filtration procedure in which no foreign substance may be used.
Only certified kosher products may be used in the wine-making process.

Nonkosher wines often use gelatin, rice, milk products or animal byproducts for clarification and purification processes.

So pretty much the same as normal Kosher rules. I guess yeast doesn't count as leaven when it's used for fermentation. Or maybe it's because the yeast is all consumed by the fermentation, and thus *you* don't consume any.

Most of it is sealed stuff, IIRC. Very, very expensive lubricants but they last an extremely long time and usually don't need regular service.

Coolant is more routine maintenance. EVs *do* have coolant (batteries are hot) and radiators.

That seems suspect to me. Most routine IC service is fluids, and the dealer won't be doing those because fluids last a lot longer in EVs.

But tires and brakes are still routine wear items that need to be done, sometimes (often) even *more* often on EVs. If the dealer was getting that business, he's still going to get that business. The other stuff like timing chains and transmission service (other than just fluid exchange) are infrequent. EVs don't have a lot of that stuff and so even those occasional items will hit the bottom line, but there's far less of it in the first place on modern cars and most people don't go to the dealer for service after the warranty period. Dealers are paid for warranty work, of course, but not by the customer.

Are dealer service departments really putting up big numbers of oil changes? They might be, but it would surprise me. Why pay the dealer premium for an oil change?

I once worked with a guy who was sort of an amateur kashrut (kosher law) scholar. So if you look at your package of aluminum foil, you may find a kosher marking because (according to him) the machinery used to make it is lubricated with food-grade lard and thus has to be certified as kosher compliant.

263 Thanks, CBD. Happy Passover Eve.

The last meal that Jesus shared with his apostles is described in all four canonical Gospels as having taken place in the week of the Passover. This meal later became known as the Last Supper. (Wikipedia & many other 'sources.)

WikiMedia Commons: English: Pieter Coecke van Aelst's The Last Supper was one of the most popular images of the sixteenth century. It freely combined the compositions of Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper in Milan (149 and Marcantonio Raimondi's engraving after Raphael's drawing of the same subject (circa 1510-20) with the enigmatic gestures of the apostles from the popular print by Albrecht Dürer (1523). The most notable differences between the version of 1528 and most others are the simplified checkerboard pattern of the floor and the dog in the foreground that misses its playmate.

265 ... It's a standard EV push to try and pretend that they have some advantage. Next comes the "they're all sports car with wonderful acceleration" (while ignoring range while using performance) right before an angry "you people are just like the folks who refused to give up their horses!" ...

They *do* have some advantage. If was in the market for an expensive, quick-as-hell second car, I'd definitely look seriously at an EV. They are quick and are often pretty damn nice. But that's not my market. I want a jack-of-all-trades car, and EVs are not that. I can run about town in my IC car (it's most of what I do), or drop everything and drive thousands of miles in a couple of days if I need to. I like that. It's what I want.

Heh. I don't think I've ever an unsealed car battery. You can still crack 'em open and top them up and try your luck, but they're usually tapped out. Apparently some people have had luck restoring car batteries with high-current welders, but I have no idea of that's real or BS.

She got convicted. After she was shipped off to Angola, officers noticed her father, with whom she lived, hadn't been seen in a while . . . and they found some human bones partly buried under her house.

And get a four-door luxury high-performance touring car will balls-to-the-wall acceleration and tight handling that is very good at being that.

It all depends on what you're after, and what the value to you is. If someone wants an EV for the things EVs are good at, cool. If someone wants one because they're hip and trendy, cool. Whatever the reason, cool. It's their money and they can do what they want with it. Marketing is always predicated on lies (or, at best, outrageous optimism) and every customer for every product has to do his own homework to determine what's right for him. That's how it always is, and EVs are no different other than in the quantity of bullshit involved and the quantity of government kingmaking, which is the real problem.

Someone being cornered into taking an EV because some dickhead in Washington said so is *not* cool.

Longevity is certainly the big concern I have for a recently purchased EV, but so far it's been pretty great. My wife does lots of short commutes through the day for groceries, kids activities, etc, which the EV (with about 220 miles of range) can easily handle, and then recharge overnight. For longer trips, she takes my car, and I can commute to and from work in the EV instead.

The money saved on gas and services is much more than $50/month...but if there's a big battery failure expense after 7 years or something, that'll be an issue. I can trust Chevy, though...right?

Buy a Chevy from the dealer advertising a "complimentary 200,000 mile warranty." The manufacturer offers a *real* warranty of 36,000 miles. That one is beholden to the Act. The "dealer warranty" isn't really a warranty as far as I know, but is rather a service contract agreement between you and the dealer. One of the conditions of that contract is that there shall be no non-dealer service.

The manufacturer's 36,000 mile warranty is the real one. The dealer's "200,000 mile warranty from Ted Johnson Chevrolet" is not a real warranty, is probably borderline false advertising given the conditions attached to it.

Oh sure, I think they definitely have a niche. I have no problem with them at all no matter how I sound. I like cars (even though they're not really cars, they're "EVs") and support interesting stuff.

I wouldn't criticize anyone buying a dirt bike or Corvette, either. The problem would be people insisting that everyone needs to buy a dirt bike or how a Corvette suits everyone's commute needs before attempting to force everyone to buy a Corvette.

A new study out of UCLA says same-sex couples are at greater “risk of exposure to the adverse effects of climate change” than straight couples.

These effects include “wildfires, floods, smoke-filled skies, and drought,” according to a report from KQED.

Same-sex couples disproportionately live in coastal regions and cities, which are more vulnerable to such disasters. They’re also more likely “to live in areas with poor infrastructure, worse-built environments.”

----
Hilarious. "The places with lots of gay people - that is, the blue hives - have shitty environmental management and infrastructure" is an oddly self-aware argument, even thought those making the argument, ironically, have no awareness of it.

One can make the argument that quick acceleration is a safety FEATURE. The ability to pass quickly and safely and get the hell out of the way of the crazy people. The ability to quickly merge into fast moving traffic (we all know that one particular on ramp.)

But that also reminds me: how come they never mention handling? My Mustang is awesome for the above, but the handling can be a bit squirrelly when you use that power if not careful. By contrast, the Miata might have had a 1/3rd of the horsepower, but it's handling was rock solid, unnatural even. It inspired so much more confidence and stayed NAILED down to the lane where you put it. You would slide out of the seat before the car lost traction- that is actually literally true, at least on dry ground.

Heh. On the plus side, it's all software-controlled and those interfaces could be exposed. That would probably be an excellent selling feature in the "in-town runabout" EV category for parents.

Yep. Not being an impediment is important, but I doubt there are even a handful of cars that can't hit 60 in what would've been 80s mid-level Porsche and Ferrari numbers these days.

I'm guessing handling of the EV behemoths is all software based similar to enormous SUVs and for the same reason. The opposite of the Miata that could take the on-ramp at 60mph because it was a solid handler and could keep up with the mustang through the mountains because it didn't need to shed speed in turns.

Sorry, I missed your response.

There are multiple paintings. The 1st is Pieter Coecke van Aelst, Belvoir Castle, 1527, with two dogs playing and then a "simplified checkerboard floor pattern, with one dog, 1528.

Then there's the 1531 painting with two dogs and a 1545 also with two dogs. And finally, Hendrik Goltzius, after Pieter Coecke van Aelst, Last Supper, 1585, also has two dogs playing and much more Bibical appearing persons gathered for supper.
