  • The Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Fold 16 2024 is actually good. (The Verge)

I don't know what the specs are because the review focuses almost entirely on the screen, but then the device is almost entirely screen, so that kind of makes sense.

Folded up with the keyboard in place the screen is about 12" diagonally. Unfolded it's a 16" 2560x2024 display, and great for artists since it's pen-enabled.

Problem, as usual, is that it costs around $3000.

  • The LinkedIn app is adding games, because... It just is. (Tech Crunch)

    Okay, I guess.

  • If you were watching the VMWare mess and feeling glad your company chose Citrix well there's bad news on the way for you as well. (The Register)

Now that the competition has destroyed itself, Citrix is doubling its pricing.

  • Get noted, commies. (Newsweek)

China posted to Twitter arguing against the proposed forced divestiture of TikTok.

They got hit with a community note pointing out that TikTok is banned in China.

And despite claims that TikTok is not controlled by the Chinese government as a spying operation, that same government says it would rather shut the whole thing down than permit it to be sold.

  • NASA's old supercomputers are causing mission delays. (Tom's Hardware)

    What missions?

  • Twelve years later, the game Star Citizen is approaching 1.0. (WCCFTech)

The game was formerly infamous for raising half a billion dollars while still in beta, but it took about a decade to do that and Palworld just did the same thing in under two months.

    So... New normal, I guess?

Disclaimer: New normal, same as the old normal... But with an extra half a billion dollars.

3 One mild disagreement. When you say that "Covid is no different there than the flu" you're forgetting that Covid is different in one significant way - There's a failed vaccine for Covid.
I believe that at least some of those "long-suffering children" probably do have lingering physical problems. But those problems came from the shot, not the virus.

Back in the 70's I went to my first and only St Pats parade in Chicago.

Started early at a bar for breakfast beers and corned beef and cabbage, on to the parade, overcast cold day, and much more beer, watching people peeing on the sidewalks, plus I'm not a fan of parades, back to the bar, for more beers.

All in all a fun day more or less.....I think

This is the ferry that crosses the river from near the famous Chalmette Battlefield ("In 1814 we took a little trip, along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip' . . ."), over to close by where I live. It must have happened on the East Bank side. He was drunk or high, I'll warrant. They called off the search yesterday afternoon. Regarding English landscape paintings.

“The countryside was seen as a direct link to the past, and therefore a true reflection of the essence of a nation.

“Paintings showing rolling English hills or lush French fields reinforced loyalty and pride towards a homeland.

“The darker side of evoking this nationalist feeling is the implication that only those with a historical tie to the land have a right to belong.”

I wonder if it is a repeated exposure allergy. In chem, and maybe in hazardous material handling training, I remember people mentioning that certain substances are fine enough for some people, but repeated exposure to them and you can develop irritation/allergies. So the TLV might be one value for first time exposure, but after repeated exposures below that, the TLV can lower.

I seemed to develop that with regards to Tomato. After about 12 years in tomato food related industries, I noticed that my hands would get irritated and itchy if I got Tomato paste or juice on them or develop blisters in my mouth if I ate something that was pasty. Thankfully, when I changed jobs it seems to have subsided a bit, but I still cannot eat tomato soup.

275 Fen,

Edge (Microsoft) and Chrome (Google) are both browser programs that allow you to read the websites you connect to. Both browsers have default search engines. MS uses Bing and Chrome uses Google. You can use another search engine (web page) with either.

You can set up your browser through the "Settings" or you can just open a tab to the search engine you want. I use Duck Duck Go but other proper use Brave and there are a few others.

I think Duck Duck Go offers a browser now too so you can just download it and use it like Chrome or Edge.

297 What Tyson foods did to residents in Iowa is one of the worst things we’ve seen a company do. The Bud Light Dylan Mulvaney situation was pathetic, but this is 100x worse.

They announced Monday that they’ll be closing the plant in June, shocking the entire town. 1200 people, 15% of the entire town, works at the plant. They’re all going to be unemployed now.

Simultaneously, Tyson is also working with an Asylum advocate group to hire 2,500 asylum seekers who are cleared to work. They’ll make $16.50/hr and get benefits.

306 There are 353 counties in 29 states with voter registrations exceeding "100 percent" of the US Census eligible voters population.

This is a true statement you will see "fact checked" in several ways:
1. Well not all those registered actually voted.
2. You are relying on census number that may be wrong (haha then your state rep and us rep counts are wrong).
3. You cannot compare a known list (registered voters) to a raw count of people.

BTW, some numbers:
Alabama: Lowndes County (130%)
Colorado: Statewide (102%); San Juan County (158%)
Georgia: Bryan County (118%); Forsyth County (114%);

Most folks who are not from South Carolina only experience the Tri-County, Charleston Berkely Dorchester county area.

And are left with the impression of wealth and a relatively high standard of living.

Unfortunately, much of the State is rural, and very poor.

I can travel far less than a half mile from our home, and find folks living in dilapidated trailers from the 70's.

And the north-easters coming in are causing the price of homes to go absolutely insane, and beyond the affordability of many.

People tend to forget that viruses attack certain body cells types and that when cured, people can still have residual damage. But that's the damage that was done, not an on going infection.

Several years ago there was a weird little mosquito-borne virus (they think) that showed up in the DFW area, infected a few people then went away.

It affected the brain and suddenly people just couldn't function properly. We had friends where the wife got it and suddenly forgot how to drive home. She called her husband crying and they finally figured out where she was. It took months before she was "over", the virus. But it left scars so to speak, her bright personality went away, and now she's prone to mild depression.

This is different than "long covid" which does seem to be the provence of broken people. Our Betters really did a job on the next generation, didn't they?

354 Totally eliminating Tyson products from your shopping list will be a chore. I'm sure they crank out a lot of product not under their label, like Walmart Great Value. I put together a shopping list last night for delivery and axed a Tyson item, and then wondered if the substitution was made by them.

50% of the cost of housing is local, state, and federal regulations.

I was looking at a chart of average price of homes in the 50's and 60's, adjusted for inflation would be low $100,000's today.

Yup, something happened, as they say.

That also, coincidentally, was the period when it only took one salary to buy a home.

We're from the government and we're here to help.

357 What Tyson did is sort of what's happening with welfare for the black community. The illegals are the preferred demographic for welfare now.

They are also, apparently, the preferred demographic for Tyson Foods.

Wonder what a mass walk-out would do for them?

Aldi's does not carry any 'name' brands that I have ever seen. What they do carry is excellent and always just a little different.

My wife likes sausage and I found a chicken sausage with spinach and feta cheese that she loves.

That just hurts the grocer and not Tyson who now gets to sell one more package.

Posted by: Ciampino - Off target at March 17, 2024 08:51 AM

Valid point. Unless enough people did it and the grocer got tired of taking the hit and stopped buying from Tyson.

364 When a local accidentally falls into the rendering machine at Tyson, the remains are fished out and the family has a funeral. Meanwhile the machine contents are dumped. If an illegal alien falls in they just render it with the chicken. Nobody knows who he really is or where from - remember al lot of them dump their real I.D.s at the border. Won't be missed.

366 Joe really tore it up at the gridiron dinner. Laugh a minute, that one. I love the "shifting to a more serious tone"

"In the coming months, Kamala and I will be making the case how Americans are better off than four years ago. How we got so much though the pandemic, turned around the economy, reestablished America's leadership in the world all without encouraging the American people to inject bleach," Biden said, referencing Trump suggesting "injecting" disinfectant to kill COVID in 2020.
"All without destroying the economy, embarrassing us around the world or itching for insurrection," he added. "Look, I wish these were jokes but they're not."
Shifting to a serious tone, the president argued democracy and freedom are under attack, a message central to his re-election campaign.

369 BTW, some numbers:
Alabama: Lowndes County (130%)

Lowndes County is in one of our Majority-Minority districts in the Black Belt, just west of Montgomery.

From what I have seen just driving through from Dallas county, it is a de-industrialized hellscape.

371 RE: Star Citizen -

The news about "approaching 1.0" is (unsurprisingly) inaccurate. What's really going on is that Chris Roberts - the individual in charge - has announced that there is a roadmap to 1.0. He has not revealed a time table, or anything of that nature. So it's still unknown when the game is coming out, and there are still a number of features that need to be added (something that I am aware of, as I occasionally play the alpha). But they now have a solid map of how they're going to get it all into the game.

Now having said all of the above, something will be out soonish. Squadron 42, the single-player space combat sim that's set in Star Citizen, was declared feature complete last fall. No official release date has been announced, but it is expected that the game will be out by the end of 2025. SQ42's feature complete status has meant that many developers working on that game are now assisting with Star Citizen. And the Star Citizen team has also just announced that they've successfully cleared one of the biggest hurdles - server meshing. These two items are likely why Roberts feels confident enough to announce this 1.0 roadmap.
