Funny story: there is a Turkish outfit that makes really, really nice Turkish walnut grip panels for all kinds of oddball/antique/foreign pistols nobody else makes grips for. They've been kicking around for years, and their products are terrific, but people ordering off Etsy or wherever were always shocked when their package shipped from Turkey/Turkiye!
So at some point in the last few months, they somehow imported a ton of product into the USA and are now shipping from a small town in the Midwest, working under the business name of 'Karen Jones'!!!! I recognized them immediately and ordered a set of grip panels I've been looking at for at least 3 years. They arrived today and they're beautiful. The grip panels are a weird business because maybe 15 years ago some guy in Montana 'inherited' a batch of brand-new Yugo pistols imported into the US in probably 1991? They arrived just in time to get frozen in Customs. They then sat 'on hold' for over 20 years until the sanctions were fully lifted, by which time this guy had bought out the business who ordered them, and out of the blue received a shipment of NOS brand-new guns he didn't even know existed. They were shipped in as 'sales samples' and have crazy low, 3-digit serial numbers. Real artifacts. He didn't even know what they were and offed them online for $400 each, mostly to people looking for a 'cheap 9mm'. I knew what they were and got two, but for whatever reason they lacked grip panels. The guns are long out of production and nobody makes panels for them, it's taken a long time to find properly fitting grips. I can't even get them in Serbia.

Ugh, I had to jump through all kinds of hoops and drop names to get access to the Organization Todt interview archives, and their interface looks like it was designed by a marginally talented 4-year-old.
It's an archive built under intense pressure on German companies to document their use of forced labor in WW2, they didn't want to do it, and knocked it down to this one website of interviews you need special permission to access, and all the interview transcripts are 'tagged' so a simple cut-and-paste job isn't possible. The site is all but unsearchable as well, their keywords are nonsense. It's almost like they don't want anyone looking at it. Posted by: LenNeal at March 15, 2024 05:23 AM (43xH1) 47

When my daughter turned 13 I sat down and typed up a set of 'rules' for her for dating and curfews for the next five years. There on a sheet of 8.5 X 11 inch paper she could see that things became progressively more lenient as time went on. My son was younger but the same rules applied. I think he was around 15 years old when some event would be past curfew time. My daughter mentioned it, and my wife and I huddled and decided to leave it in her hands, while encouraging her to get some concession in return for granting him leniency if she so decided. I forget what exactly he had to do in return, maybe vacuum her bedroom weekly for a month or something. Posted by: Divide by Zero at March 15, 2024 05:32 AM (RKVpM) 50

Haha! One of my buddies had the brilliant idea of getting helium balloons, letting half the helium out and refilling them with acetylene from his dad's welding tanks. Then he attached a length of cannon fuse and would let them fly upward at night. When they went off it was better than any firework!
BOOM He did this with one, and for *reasons* walked through the house with it in his hands. The carpet in the living room set it off with static electricity. It slammed his arms into the door frame and sprained both his wrists. He was deaf for about a week. The best part was, he was wearing a cheap rock band T-shirt, with the logo painted on. The problem with the 'nanny' software is that it costs money and takes time to install and monitor. An act of Congress requiring all ISP's to block Tik Tok would be simple and immediate. Then set up guidelines for an 'opt-in' option. Maybe a postcard with a check box. Schools with wifi would hopefully decide not to opt-in. Parents with children too young could decide not to opt-in. Not that I like China but we rag on them for stealing our intellectual property. Posted by: Divide by Zero at March 15, 2024 06:05 AM (RKVpM) 72
Since I know this isn't the crowd to care about mid-1980s Japanese Punk ('Aggressive Dog' is terrific), I offer up 'Three Man Army' 1971 album, 'A Third Of A Lifetime' (YT):
"The group was formed by Adrian Gurvitz and Paul Gurvitz, formerly of The Gun. Following the band’s dissolution, Adrian played with Buddy Miles and Paul played with Parrish & Gurvitz, then reunited as Three Man Army. Their debut album, A Third of a Lifetime, featured both Buddy Miles, as well as Mike Kellie (from Spooky Tooth). Tony Newman, who had previously played with Sounds Incorporated and Jeff Beck, joined for the group’s next two albums, and a fourth album was recorded but not released until 2005. Newman then left to play with David Bowie, and the Gurvitzes united with Ginger Baker as the Baker Gurvitz Army." Posted by: LenNeal at March 15, 2024 06:13 AM (43xH1) 73

Usually I came pretty close; one year I'd get $50 back, another I'd have to send that, but it was always pretty small. in '22, though, I didn't have SS withhold anything, and I had a bigger bill than usual the next April. So for '23 I had them take out 10%. It was way too much and I got a very big refund (just got it, in fact). Since I plan to retire, I've had them reinstate the 10%. I've already paid two months' worth, so in 2025 I should not have a big bill. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at March 15, 2024 06:36 AM (omVj0) 89

PassMark doesn't have any scores up yet but I doubt it's worth the cost and heat for most users. A 14700 will give you 75% of the performance at less than half the power consumption.
-- It would be interesting to have tests to determine if 1000 fairly geeky people could tell the difference with the system with a 14700KS, a 14700K, a 14700, or the 13 equivalents. The problem with the 'nanny' software is that it costs money and takes time to install and monitor.
- And, as we're learning at this very moment with trying to figure out how to safely allow a phone on certain days, nanny / parental control software is mostly ineffective at best and destructive of the family relationship at worst because it damages the sense of trust the parents have spent years cultivating because kids don't understand just how harmful the internet can be and that they don't have the experience to begin to navigate it safely. My go to right now: "The internet isn't for kids, and we're trying to figure out how to let you use some parts of it, and it might been a flip phone with no data until we figure out exactly how to move forward." I had a client years ago that wanted monitoring software installed on all his employe's PCs. The program captured every keystroke and mouse click. There was so much data that he never looked at it after the first time. Somebody has to monitor the monitoring software in order to monitor the monitored.
