125 Chase is supposed to be an American Impressionist and I guess the girl's dress and the slit of color behind the drape would qualify. Her skin tones and hair are not. I noticed a similar approach on his more detailed portraits. The clothes and backgrounds are Impressionistic but not the faces and bodies. An interesting combination.

Despite the very plain 'portrait' here, I find it intriguing. I like art that invites the viewer to imagine a story based on the image. Probably why I enjoy book illustrations so much. In this case perhaps a story could go: "Alicia hesitated for a moment before entering the room, torn between her curiosity and fear. The man her father had chosen to be her husband, a man she had never seen, was on the other side of the curtain. What would he be like? Would he be kind? And what of her dreams of a life with Raoul, the farrier?"

Yeah, I need more coffee.

Some years back I ran the quality control lab for an aerospace company. There were 20-30 people working for me. With my other duties, such as writing QC inspection procedures and inspections, I couldn't actually properly supervise the lab. I was given permission to hire 2 assistants from people already in the company. I devised a basic skills test for the applicants. I got a lot of shit from unskilled and unqualified "senior" employees who wanted the job. However, I gave the job to the 2 high scoring guys. I walked through the lab twice a day, otherwise it was their baby to operate as they wished. I never had a moment's problem out of them, and complaints about the lab from production supervisors disappeared. No DIE was involved.

Stirling's predecessor, big shaggy black Wolf, was not neutered until he was about 18 months old, when I adopted him. He'd been allowed to roam to a degree by his previous humans. To this day we see a high prevalence of semi- and full longhairs among the feral population.

NEW — Billionaire activist investor Nelson Peltz plans to support Trump, cites worry over rising US immigration under Biden
Billionaire activist investor Nelson Peltz intends to cast his vote for Donald Trump, expressing apprehension about President Biden’s mental state, which he described as “really scary,” as per FT’s report on Tuesday.

Peltz, who shares the same age as Biden at 81, prioritized concerns about Biden’s mental fitness over any misgivings he may have about Trump’s involvement in the January 6 attacks on the US Capitol.

“It will probably be Trump and I’m not happy about that,” he remarked to the Financial Times during an interview in Palm Beach, Florida, referring to the 77-year-old GOP frontrunner.

The founder of the $10 billion investment firm Trian Partners also highlighted his worries about the immigration crisis under Biden, stating that the nation was “degrading.”

Although Peltz may lean towards voting for Trump, he has not yet determined whether he will provide financial support for the former president.

He also told the outlet that he hasn’t spoken to Trump, who is his neighbor in Palm Beach, “in quite a while.”

218 It's "Movies Where Changing Times Have Forced the Need for Critical Reassessment Week" at Rancho de naturalfake.

Last night, we watched "Heaven's Gate" on Criterion. It's still not a good movie but it's probably the most beautiful movie you'll ever see with some wonderful set pieces. HG is also badly miscast with Kris Kristofferson being the main offender.

The big failing however is in the writing. HG begins with a beautiful, almost fairytale-like graduation of the rich and powerful at Harvard, where we learn nothing about the main characters, then "20 Years Later" flashes onscreen and we're with those same and more main characters with no reason for the change.

However, you can see what Cimino is trying say in his stew of soap-opera, abused immigrants, the power of Our Betters to get whatever they want because- and here's where modern times step up to the plate- even the law is on their side, Our Betters would still rather just kill the opposition or drive them out of society because the law is just too lenient and slow on these deplorables. Sound familiar?

Made in 1980, this was probably just another antiAmerican screed but, perceptions change.

235 BIG LIE ALERT:
Global temperatures “smashed” heat records last year, as heatwaves stalked oceans and glaciers suffered record ice loss, the United Nations said Tuesday — warning 2024 was likely to be even hotter.

The annual State of the Climate report by the UN weather and climate agency confirmed preliminary data showing 2023 was by far the hottest year ever recorded.

And last year capped off “the warmest 10-year period on record”, the World Meteorological Organization said, with even hotter temperatures expected.

“There is a high probability that 2024 will again break the record of 2023”, WMO climate monitoring chief Omar Baddour told reporters.

Reacting to the report, UN chief Antonio Guterres said it showed “a planet on the brink”.

“Earth’s issuing a distress call,” he said in a video message, pointing out that “fossil fuel pollution is sending climate chaos off the charts”, and warning that “changes are speeding up”.

The WMO said that last year the average near-surface temperature was 1.45 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels — dangerously close to the critical 1.5-degree threshold that countries agreed to avoid passing in the 2015 Paris climate accords.

244 Also from The Met: The Seventeenth Century Woman, ca 1895.

A consummate eclectic, Chase borrowed freely from old masters such as Frans Hals, Rembrandt van Rijn, and Diego Velázquez, and from contemporaries such as Édouard Manet, James McNeill Whistler, and John Singer Sargent. Here, he refers in the title of his painting to tradition, but shows a woman dressed in modern attire. She is seen from behind in a dark, ambiguous setting that is pierced by a sliver of light that suggests a slightly opened door. Uninterested in his model's particular identity, Chase calls attention to her gown, which he describes with expressive brushwork and subtle tones of white. Chase had painted a full-length portrait of his wife entitled Lady in White (1894; private collection), of which a critic observed when it appeared at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts: "It is little more than a study of a white satin dress against a dark background, for her face is turned from the spectator." The same could be said for this painting.

Thanks! Admire all of Chase's work but probably wouldn't hang this piece.

251 Vietnam less of a Phuc up than the USA:
Vietnam’s President Vo Van Thuong has resigned after just one year in the job, state media announced Wednesday, as the communist country mounts a sweeping anti-graft purge.

The Vietnam News Agency (VNA) said Thuong was guilty of “violations and shortcomings” and his resignation was accepted by the party’s central committee.

The 53-year-old’s dramatic fall comes as Vietnam undergoes major political upheaval, with his predecessor also forced out in an anti-corruption drive that has seen several ministers fired and top business leaders tried for fraud.

VNA said Thuong had violated unspecified “regulations” and failed to set a proper example as head of state.

While the president is head of state, real power is seen to lie with party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, who is regarded as the architect behind the anti-corruption drive, which has proved popular among the Vietnamese public.

258 Generally speaking, actresses of THESE times aren't generally considered "ladies."

I think it depends on who they are. Plenty of actresses who do work on Broadway or in smaller roles in TV and film or who do things like "Sight and Sound" which is a faith based drama group in PA are fairly ladylike.

260 Vietnam’s President Vo Van Thuong has resigned after just one year in the job, state media announced Wednesday, as the communist country mounts a sweeping anti-graft purge.

The Vietnam News Agency (VNA) said Thuong was guilty of “violations and shortcomings” and his resignation was accepted by the party’s central committee.

The 53-year-old’s dramatic fall comes as Vietnam undergoes major political upheaval, with his predecessor also forced out in an anti-corruption drive that has seen several ministers fired and top business leaders tried for fraud. ...

Ah, yes. A well-worn story. Bring out the "anti-corruption" brigades to purge internal Party enemies while doing nothing about corruption as such. Be as corrupt as you'd like, so long as you're aligned properly.

Xi has been doing this for about a decade now. "Anti-corruption" activities are Party purges, nothing more. I guess Thuong and his faction crossed the other Party power players or have policies that the Party fears. I dunno which. It doesn't matter. These actions are all the same, and are always about Party power struggle.

267 I don't talk to leftards anymore unless I have to but the other night I was all but forced into a conversation with one of my wife's colleagues and let me tell you something.

The most deranged thing I have probably ever heard in my life came out of her mouth -

"Jesus Christ wasnt a Christian, so when he said that, he wasn't talking about Christians. People made that up."

Where can you even go with that? Why would you?

I did let her know that Jesus in fact *told* people he was coming back before he did, so I'm pretty certain he knew he wasn't merely some plain old regular Jew.
