Whoa, boy! Way, way off!
Francisco Oller Puerto Rican painter (1833 - 1917) Francisco Oller was a Puerto Rican painter. Oller is the only Latin American painter to have played a role in the development of Impressionism. One of the most distinguished transatlantic painters of his day, Oller helped transform painting in the Caribbean. When Oller was eighteen, he moved to Madrid, Spain, where he studied painting at the Royal Academy of San Fernando, under the tutelage of Don Federico de Madrazo y Kuntz, director of the Prado Museum. In 1858, he moved to Paris, France where he studied under Thomas Couture. Later he enrolled to study art in the Louvre under the instruction of Gustave Courbet.[5] During his free time, Oller, who had a baritone type of singing voice, worked and participated in local Italian operas. He frequently visited cafés where he met with fellow artists. He also became a friend of fellow Puerto Ricans Ramón Emeterio Betances y Alacán and Salvador Carbonell del Toro, who were expatriates in France because of their political beliefs. In 1859, Oller exhibited some of his artistic works next to those of Bazille, Renoir, Monet, and Sisley.[5] Posted by: andycanuck (2yu8s) at February 22, 2024 09:49 AM (2yu8s) 64

This is one of Oller’s rare interior scenes from his first years in Paris. It evokes the domestic intimacy of a couple sewing and reading. Details such as the objects on the desk and chair, the diminutive pictures on the wall, and the small shelf for glass objects are described with subtle precision. The poses of the man and woman are probably derived from famous works of art by Johannes Vermeer and Gustave Courbet that Oller had seen in Paris. The skull that the young man holds in his right hand is probably a reference to the swift passage of time.

There was no drape to soften the light. The shadow made by the sun is sharper and larger than the shadow made by the sky. The tiny shadow border has bluish aura that is incredibly subtle. Posted by: BourbonChicken at February 22, 2024 09:55 AM (cf/0E) 85

I like this painting. It is intimate and reminds me, and probably others, of being young and making do with small space and inexpensive decoration. The poses are natural, the detail of the small glass items on the wall and the furnishings, even the woman's cup on a spare chair, have a very real feel. The light overall color of the piece, making use of the bright sunlight, takes away any downside about being poor. It is a positive scene as they pair work to improve their lives.
I make this comparison often but this makes me think of a scene that Norman Rockwell could paint. Posted by: JTB at February 22, 2024 09:57 AM (zudum) 92

Any Michiganders that can chime in on this weirdness?
Dueling MIGOP conventions set for March 2 in Detroit and Grand Rapids. There are now two Michigan Republican Party conventions to go along with the two people who say they are the rightful chair of the party. As some of us have noted, The only civil war is among ReTHUGs See them fighting for power. Time to activate the undercover Dem Mich GOP operatives to stage a Third Way GOP Problem Solvers Convention in Kalamazoo, Financed by a shadowy George Soros-connected untraceable slush fund! MIGOP is nearly broke, but they rent two expensive venues. Clearly, they are the party of fiscal responsibility. Is Karamo still at it lol? She was ousted once just didn’t like it so they ousted her AGAIN. Sounded ridiculous to me to complain when you say it out loud. Part of it is a clash of cultures - if you have people used to conversations and a slow pace they get annoyed at those curt "just do your job" people and vice versa. In the old days people didn't move as much so there was less of this sort of clash. Your area was one way or the other or some level in between. Of course another part of this is that we've moved to two work outside of the home couples. So in the old days the wife didn't have to rush home from the grocery store because the husband is getting home late from the office and then she has a zoom meeting at 7 and someone's got to make dinner for the kids and the government wants 82 documents for the census by tomorrow and your taxes and on and on... Or the person at the head of the line has to use a card (probably an EBT, the way things are in America), and she pokes at the device as if she's afraid it will bite her. And the card is declined.
Had a guy in front of me going back and forth between two EBT cards. He had a little girl with him and his food was mostly real food not junk. They had to bring over a manager to work out what was up with his cards but they figured it out. He turned and apologized and I told him it was fine...I know how hard it is to shop with little kids. But...multiple cards? One for him and one for the mother of the little girl maybe? Of course there is a whole market in EBT cards... Posted by: 18-1 at February 22, 2024 10:53 AM (ibTVg) 348
Houston traffic has gotten better since I moved here in 1994. But because of the recent population increase it’s starting to revert back to the bad old days.

You impatient folks may as well go live in a metropolis like Pixley. In my store, I always have time to shoot the breeze with whomever comes in, be it Newt Kiley, the Douglases, Eb Dawson, Kate or the Bradley girls (Hubba, Hubba!), Mr. Haney, Alf or Ralph, County Agent Hank Kimball, Selma or Henrietta Plout, and of course, Floyd or Charlie.
OTOH, Homer Bedloe can go squeeze a breeze! Posted by: Sam Drucker, Editor, Hooterville World Guardian at February 22, 2024 10:54 AM (V5BDR) 351

That’s my take as well. I learned long ago to not let stupid shit like that bother me. It’s like OK so instead of spending 18 minutes at Safeway it will now be 19.2 minutes. Oh well. Whatever. Posted by: Montec at February 22, 2024 10:55 AM (bWsRe) 352
For what it's worth, I was in Phoenix yesterday, they don't F around there. Everyone drives 80 on the freeways, but then I'm not there in rush hour. Honestly that is the way it should be. If the highways were rated at 75 with 50s era cards 80 is perfectly safe on a flat straight highway in 2024. One of the things that amazes me is how transportation has stagnated over the last few decades. I suspect if you told people in the 60s that it would generally take longer to get most places in 2024 then it did in 1964 they wouldn't believe you... The thing I can't figure out about Swamp traffic: The main bridge over the river is usually a breeze for me going home in the afternoon to my side of the river. But the span that goes to the East Bank is clogged terribly at 4:30-5:00. Do all those people *work* on my side, and then have to slog to their homes on the east side? Decades ago, the West Bank was the commuter suburb, and cars jammed the bridge at five going to that side. What changed?

Sometimes you can suddenly get crazy traffic if even a few people need to take a left off of a major road. There is enough traffic going the other way they can't turn and then no one behind them can get by... Posted by: 18-1 at February 22, 2024 11:01 AM (ibTVg) 361

It’s like how if someone cuts you off driving, they’re not doing it specifically to you. Yiu just happen to be there. And in most cases the cutter offer doesn’t even realize what they did. My take is most of the things people do to piss us off are things the person doesn’t even realize they’re doing. So me getting angry at it hs no effect either way. I dunno, life’s just easier shrugging at these things than getting angry. For me anyway. Posted by: Montec at February 22, 2024 11:02 AM (bWsRe) 366
