  • Total Pixy Recall: Snap has issued a recall of every Pixy. (The Verge)

More specifically, they are recalling the Pixy battery, but since they are recalling the Pixy battery because it catches fire, they very much do not want you to send back the battery.

They want you to send back the Pixy, without the battery, although the Pixy itself is perfectly fine and it's the battery that's the problem.

Tech News

  • Pairing the new Ryzen 8700G with DDR5-9000 memory increases performance by 15%/ (Guru3D)

Moving from DDR5-6400 to 8000 already doubles the price, and I couldn't find DDR5-9000 for sale at all.

Pairing the slightly cheaper Ryzen 7700 with a Radeon 6600 would cost no more and would deliver around twice the graphics performance.

The 7800G is a good all-rounder chip if you mostly use your computer for work with some occasional light gaming. If you care about that extra 15% of graphics performance, just buy a graphics card.

  • Speaking of memory, you can now add 256GB of RAM to regular Intel desktop systems except you can't. (WCCFTech)

64GB memory modules should be here soon, but right now it's just a check box on the motherboard feature list.

  • Speaking of check boxes on motherboard feature lists, it seems that Intel started supporting ECC memory - two years ago.

The Core i5 12500 and up, 13500 and up, and 14500 and up all support ECC RAM, both with DDR4 and DDR5.

Finding a motherboard that enables that support is harder, but Gigabyte looks to be a good bet. Several of their motherboards, again both DDR4 and DDR5 models, enable ECC.

  • There's another security vulnerability in GitLab. (Tech Radar)

This one is marked critical, but it's a privilege escalation bug, so it only applies to users who are already logged in to your GitLab server.

Disclaimer: 256GB should be enough for anybody.

5 Evening and morning to early risers and late toilers! 'Tis Friday, the consummation devoutly to be wished. For me, today, five days next week, and then I have a four-day weekend (Mawdi Grass -- the last I'll ever have to suffer through, I hope). MG is fun when you're a kid. In fact the parades came by half a block from my house until I was in college. But as a grownup, if the parade is not in your neighborhood, you have to battle traffic, find a parking space, walk blocks to the route, then battle your way home. No.

If it is in your neighborhood, fine, but you have to get home before it all starts in the evening, or you'll find it hard to cross the parade route. And you can't get out until the parade and traffic are over.

9 a cheery Friday thought:

“The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation. What is called resignation is confirmed desperation. From the desperate city you go into the desperate country, and have to console yourself with the bravery of minks and muskrats. A stereotyped but unconscious despair is concealed even under what are called the games and amusements of mankind. There is no play in them, for this comes after work. But it is a characteristic of wisdom not to do desperate things..”

34 The other thing many people don't get about Mawdi Grass, aside from it's not just one parade but multiple days of them, is that it moves. Skip, in late '22 I fell *up* a short flight of steps. I know how to fall and I rolled with it, landing on my left side, and shook it off as you did. A week later, suddenly, I had aches and steady pain -- on my *right* thigh and hip! I had to put in for Workmen's Comp and go to physical therapy. Took about a month to set it right.

The latest episode of Tucker Carlson about the Darien Gap in Panama is frightening. Cliff Notes on this longer then an hour episode: There is a 60 mile gap in the Pan American highway from North and South America where it appears 'migrants' from all over the world come together. Predominately males from China (who are silent about their reasons for migration) blend with other migrants from other countries to be less noticeable in sheer numbers.

It wouldn't be terrible in a strong economy, where people can actually service that debt and use that leverage of present and future income to buy the nice things things they can eventually afford, but not all at once. But the important corollary information is how much people are actually keeping up with their debt. A quarter million left to pay off on your mortgage is a breeze if your payments are a quarter of your income. If they're three quarters, you should have never been given that mortgage in the first place.

81 To chew on the idea a bit more, think about how these goofball and charlatans use buzzwords wrong... they know a word like "grift" appears to have traction on the right, mostly because the left and the gope have dropped the curtain entirely on how it is they operate and so they think "i want that kind of rhetorical traction too!" and then bolt on extra vocabulary like a set of snow chains from Sears. But... the fascinating thing is that it means they *do* hear us. They do get at least some exposure to the arguments of the right... but they literally have no idea what the words mean. It is the purest form of politics as team sport.

I think there's actually a case to be made. The average euro either lives and breathes soccer, knowing every intricacy of the game, or doesn't watch at all. (It's a bi-modal distribution, then. Whatever. Shut up. You know what i mean. ) The average American fan just sits around with the game on bullshitting with their buddies and occasionally paying attention to the screen whenever the announcer gets loud.

That's no knock on Americans. It just means you play for our amusement. Like the little trained fleas and monkeys that you are.

92 The vast majority of sports journalists have almost no idea how the game of real football is actually played. Nor do the fans. It's incredibly complicated, and what's "actually happening" isn't always readily apparent until the coaches and players sit down and analyze footage of it from multiple angles several days later.

People still like to watch football. (Real football). Because hooray touchdown or yay loud crunching sound. They don't need to know what a Sweep Red 59 Vegas is to enjoy the game.
And I had to make that up. Because i don't know what any of that crazy shit is called either.

93 ☑ First Mortgage - Paid off
☑ Second Mortgage (student loan) - Paid off
☑ Credit cards - Paid off and gone forever
☐ Car loan - $12,000 but could pay it off

It only took about 35 years to accomplish
Posted by: Divide by Zero

Congratulations. I still have a mortgage that is in price of a modest/average car. The good news is I could pay it off anytime I want but I won't/ don't because I make more money in the stock market with those funds. I was blessed by never having to take out large student loans and was able to save sufficient funds that my son, who recently graduated, came out debt free. I've never had credit card debt and never will unless something extraordinary goes wrong. As for car loans, I never had one, which reflects that I drove beater cars for years until I had enough wealth accumulated to where I could buy new cars from time to time.

So welcome to the club. It's a fantastic place to be.

The paying double part is tricky to evaluate. You have to live somewhere and the other alternative is paying rent. If rents are roughly the same as paying a 30-year mortgage, the paying double part sort of doesn't matter. What does matter is you accumulate the capital gains and have had 30 years of tax write-offs which puts you so far ahead of renting. For mortals, here in the USA, owning a home is the biggest first step you can take to accumulating wealth. At least that's been my experience.

I'm not saying that rhetorically. I actually don't know. I thought that was more or less how it works in PA. Yes, those are ongoing expenses and cannot be overlooked. I solved that issue by moving to New Mexico, a place that is inexpensive and I enjoy living at in spite of the Communist Governor. I have a very nice house in the 1500 square foot range and my property taxes run me $1,500 a year and my insurance is about another $850. I could have stayed in the Pacific Northwest but those expenses would have killed me because of property values. Part of the trick in using your strategy of moving to undervalued areas is picking out places that are going to be the next hotspot. In my particular case, Las Cruces, New Mexico has been exactly that kind of place. I bought my house in Las Cruces in 2019 and it's doubled in value since I moved here. The amount of new development going on in select areas is significant and seems to just be getting started. One of the more interesting developments is more and more movies are being shot here and there is a sound stage being built right now.

168 Lets say, in theory, that I did enjoy a free-flowing game of kickball, on a football field, with a net at either end. I can only assume that I'd want to see it played at the highest level.

Which begs the question ... why would I want to watch slower, weaker women play it at a much lower level ? Unless, of course, they were either attractive or at least compelling in some other emotional or intellectual manner. So why then would I ever want to watch this particular bunch of American harpies who hate men and lecture more than the typical wife ? Its not a question meant to be funny.

Money wise, most definitely, but the big impetus for our move was to get the hell away from other people. We intentionally picked a place that there was 0% chance of it ever becoming developed. We're not in it for the money, we're in it for our sanity. We may take a bath on this place if we ever have to sell it, but we consider that just the price of not being crammed in cheek by jowl with other people.

249 I signed an Executive Order allowing the U.S. to issue sanctions against those who direct or participate in acts of violence against civilians in the West Bank, including extremist settlers.

I thot they were forcibly removed in 05!

We met a yankee recently who did similar. BEAUTIFUL property, 15 or so wooded acres, creeks, etc. Still overpriced at $10K/acre, but that's become the norm for that area, and that's a decent chunk of acreage for that area now, too.

Pictures on the listing are stunning.

The only teensy little problem is they didn't take any leaving the driveway, where there are four trailers, three campers, and who knows how many vehicles, running and broken down, and trash everywhere. "The dozen residents only use meth and no one is a meth dealer" would be a best case scenario.

Enjoy your new property!

It ain’t 1800’s England. People that can’t afford it can get free and reduced lunch prices, free breakfast, free school supplies and in many places free food sent back home with the kids.

$3 to $4.

I'm betting the actual cost of a meal to taxpayers is well over $10. Staff, retirement, admin over the staff, admin over the retirement system employees, admin over the staff of the retirement admin, etc.
