38 Ok. After three days, I talked myself of buying the Sub-2000. It's just a toy. I need another gun, and I have to buy that anyway. I'll need ammo for the new gun, and fresh stuff for the old guns. Why blow money on a toy?
Still, it rings hollow. There's a voice in my head saying "buy 'em both, YD. Who cares what the wife says? She'll get over it. You bought her a house. Why not buy a third gun? Maybe that CZ?" I hate that guy. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at January 30, 2024 10:10 PM (IyWjs) I've been looking at those for a while, but haven't pulled the trigger yet (Ha Ha). The Coen Brothers remake of True Grit was much more true to the book than the earlier version was; and it "got" the point of the book, which the first movie missed completely. The first version was a good movie, but it was just John Wayne being John Wayne like he was in every other John Wayne movie, and Robert Duvall being Robert Duvall, and Mattie being an annoying little brat.
The point of the story was this - people on the Frontier in the 1800's didn't think, or act, or talk like we do today. You didn't survive unless you had True Grit, and those characters had it - and it was often harsh and cold and brutal, with no room for sentimentality. The coward Tom Chaney does NOT have it - he whines constantly and then dies. Mattie loses her arm and isn't bothered too much by the fact. 122 72 "It's insane. The more we look, the more crazy things we see."
The more I think about the supposed independent evolution of life on Earth, beginning with self-replicating cells, then self-replicating agglomerations of identical cells, then self-replicating groups of different cells with different functions, then sexual reproduction of structures of many different cells with different functions, the more I subscribe to a guided/programmed/controlled creation and evolution of life on Earth. However, I admit the possibility that a lot of seeming impossibly inexplicable chemical events could have randomly yet sequentially occurred over the immense period of billions of years. We can never know. This makes for fascinating speculation. If anyone is interested, I watched an interview of Elon Musk with Tucker Carlson. Musk oozes intelligence. When asked complicated questions, he sometimes took up to 30 seconds to ponder his answer, with no 'ums' or 'uhs'. Listening to him, he has to be the most intelligent man I have ever heard, a real credit to humanity. (His talking style reminds me of Thomas Sowell, thoughtful and well-measured.)
And speaking of humanity, Musk is extremely worried about unregulated AI. AI can currently write decent poetry and can make interesting art, but not good human figures (yet). He's literally worried about AI turning into SkyNet, with AI eventually deciding that humans 'need help', currently without any way to stop that 'help'. He mentioned two types of AI out there, then said there's a third way. 'I think I'll start a company to do just that.' And I believe he'll 'do just that'. The man is amazing when you hear him just talk in a relaxed manner, which Carlson provides. Seriously, good stuff. Posted by: RickZ at January 30, 2024 10:49 PM (emlEe) 163

Y'know, I think the way we can solve the excess of federal employees is to find out what each agency actually does, and then put them in a tournament bracket with all other federal agencies that have the same function. Do inter-agency cage matches. The agency with the most surviving employees gets to stay. All other survivors are released from federal employment and listed as ineligible for re-hire. Posted by: RickZ at January 30, 2024 10:34 PM (emlEe) For Theresa, some avian Texas trivia - I'm only two hours east of you, but our birds are very different, and much more varied, than those in FW. It's because that 120 miles is enough to put us on the edge of a different migratory pathway - for example, in the winter months (like now) I have cardinals and robins in my yard and on my bird feeder every single morning. They'll head back north about March. For bird watchers, it's really fun how many big hawks you can see this time of year hanging around open fields, looking for eats. They're generally heading to the Texas coast to spend the winter there, but quite a few of them stop off and stick around if the weather isn't too bad. Life on Earth began at the end of this period called the late heavy bombardment, some 3.8 billion years ago. It's one of my favorite live albums. Collins was a great drummer. A solid singer (Gabriel said he was the better singer in Genesis). I liked him. I have a ton of CDs of his if you include Genesis along with solo. He was prolific for a long time. His health has gone downhill in the last few years.

218 I like Phil Collins. A Genesis live album, 'Seconds Out', is really good. Gabriel had just left the band and they were touring for their first post Gabriel album (Trick of the Tail). It's one of my favorite live albums. Collins was a great drummer. A solid singer (Gabriel said he was the better singer in Genesis). I liked him. I have a ton of CDs of his if you include Genesis along with solo. He was prolific for a long time. His health has gone downhill in the last few years.
Posted by: Puddleglum, cheer up for the worst is yet to come at January 30, 2024 11:05 PM (sAmhv) Yup. Chronic alcoholism. It never expressed itself while he was actively touring, but it started with a vengeance once he slowed down. He writes about his travails in his autobiography. That and his constant drumming took a toll on his body. Frankly, I'd be surprised if he survives the year. Posted by: Darrell Harris at January 30, 2024 11:09 PM (nkaBM) 235
got me thinking about the Coen Brothers, and I rewatched "The Big Lebowski" this week. A movie I thought was ok the first time I saw it, and is one of those rare movies that gets better and better each time I see it. It hit me this week - I have a guess as to why so many guys love that movie, especially the character of Walter Sobchak. It's clearly the best character John Goodman ever played, and he makes the movie more than any other.
We all have an internal dialogue running all the time, our inner thoughts and reactions to everything we see, hear, and do. We learn to carefully filter this, to never let anyone see all of what's really going on inside - but for most men, Walter Sobchak is that Inner Voice, the one the rest of us know never to let anyone else see. Every crazy thought that pops into his head comes out of his mouth, also the brilliant ones, and if he thinks it's a good idea to jump out of the car while its still rolling, he just jumps out of the car, he doesn't waste time asking if this is really a Good Idea. There's a Walter Sobchak hidden inside all of us. Posted by: Tom Servo at January 30, 2024 11:10 PM (S6gqv) 236

Frontline in its latest episode, "Democracy on Trial" tells the story of the J6 committee and how that now informs all the show trials against Donald Trump. It is a masterpiece of one sided propaganda. The episode presents itself was being a dispassionate and authoritative documentary, but the problem is it's based on the J6 show trial narrative without a serious consideration of other viewpoints. I do not point this episode out to promote its perspective and conclusions. Rather I point it out as something that should be seen by the righteous opponents of the left wing cabal that is trying to put President Trump in jail for life and permanently hollow out Our Federalist system of government.

Posted by: Way, Way Downriver at January 31, 2024 01:21 AM (zdLoL) You're recalling the S&W model 3 (top-break) revolver, chambered in .44 Russian. S&W made many thousands of these on contract to sell to the late 1800s Russian Czar's Army. And so, also sold much of the production into the 1870 American market, too. Along with the ammo. They didn't handle as nimbly as the Colt Single Action Army, but they tended to be a bit more accurate, and a HELL OF A LOT FASTER, to reload. Given that all six simultaneously ejected, when the gun was broken open at the front, lower frame hinge. Those guns did not "go to Russia" and return, just to be sold here. They were S&W selling off excess production, directly into the domestic market. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at January 31, 2024 01:29 AM (e6UQI) 435

No doubt. But even into the 1950s, a "Custom" combat revolver was likely more like an early "Fitz Special", with it's bobbed hammer and cut-away trigger guard. Not to much in the way of custom cylinders, which would also require different timing parts for the hand, star, pawl and bolt, in either the S&W or Colt designs. I fully believe that our nation is the most exceptional one on the planet, populated by an extraordinary people who are governed by a political system unique in history.

Your recent post;" I am one of those who chose a profession that I truly loved and had a very satisfying career pursuing it. For 44 years I was the friendly chap who fixed your car right the FIRST time." ...reminded me of my deceased brother who was a fine, respected mechanic who got cancer from working on trucks with asbestos brake linings. Unfortunately, he was gone at 62 but you gave me a reason to think of him today. Thanks. Posted by: JM in Ill -- Behold the Manchurian Candidate at January 31, 2024 02:22 AM (eHnRM) 460
I.G. has it right, DDS needs to follow through and VOID Lee's surrender, and Julius Ceaser needs to remember that he's been dead for well over a thousand years.
Stabbed to death by his Senate, for reasons that even I.G. and Lee would comprehend, understand, if not actually approving of the remedy, itself. Even Ceaser was NOT a GOD, and his Senate drove THAT point home, from the tip to the haft, of their knives. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at January 31, 2024 02:25 AM (e6UQI) 461

Hey, JQ, really happy to see you here. Read all of your stuff about MoMe attendance last night. I was the same, but hubs was still here, and I asked my kids to care for him while I indulged myself. Never told them why I was in Texas or what drew me there, but it changed my life and I made some really good friends. Should I ever hit the lottery, I will send a limo for you, you and My Life Is Insanity, she is also very deserving of MoMe time.

Dungarees... haha.
That's the word my grandmother used for "jeans" Also-- USN had a 'working uniform' called dungarees: Jean-style denim trousers and blue chambray shirts. Rank insignia only (no "rate" included) that were plain, black ink, iron-on, instead of a sewn-on patch.
