Survey: The Top 1% Richest Of the Country Feel That Normal Americans Have Too Much Freedom, and That Meat, Fuel, and Electricity Should Be Strictly Rationed to the Lower Orders

I briefly covered this earlier but this merits more than a mention.

The Daily Mail:

America's richest 1% and Ivy Leaguers say the rest of the country has TOO much personal freedom and want to ration food and electricity, shocking poll finds

Elites want to save the planet by banning SUVs and jet plane vacations

They're much bigger fans of Joe Biden and the government than regular voters
ers

By James Reinl, Social Affairs Correspondent, For Dailymail.Com

America's top earners have been blasted as 'wildly out of touch' after polling showed their views differ sharply from regular voters on everything from climate change to personal liberties.

A survey has found that 'top 1 percent' earners and Ivy League graduates are much keener on banning and rationing cars and air travel in pursuit of climate targets than the rest of the country.

They also expressed an authoritarian streak -- nearly six in ten members of the elite say there's too much personal freedom in the US, many times more than for ordinary voters.

toponepercentauthoritarian.jpg

This poll is by Scott Rasmussen's new firm, conducted for the Committee to Unleash Prosperity. (His old namesake firm, Rasmussen Reports, was bought by someone else.)

This is shocking stuff. They're monsters from a science fiction movie.

The Committee to Unleash Prosperity, a free market advocacy group which led the poll, said in its report that the great and the good 'live in a bubble of their own construction.'

'The people who think they run the country don't think the same things about issues like individual freedom climate change and whether the government can be trusted,' said committee member Steve Moore.

'To understand that is to understand the divide in contemporary American politics.'

....

Pollsters contrasted the views of regular voters with two surveys last September of 1,000 members of the elite -- identified as those with postgraduate degrees living in cities and earning more than $150,000 a year.

...

The elites support the rationing of gas, meat, and electricity to cut emissions of planet-heating gases -- more than three quarters of elites support such a Draconian policy, to which two thirds of regular Americans are opposed.

Of course, the Davoisie want to ration gas, electricity, and even food for the lower orders while continuing to live like pharaohs themselves.

rationingtheelite.jpg

Their climate-fighting aspirations do not stop there. Elites also support banning many modern conveniences, from gas stoves, to air conditioners, non-essential air travel and gas-guzzling SUVs. Regular voters would by wide margins keep all of these, the survey showed.

Elites are much keener on the US government than others. Fully 70 percent of them trust federal officials to 'do the right thing most of the time' -- more than twice the nationwide average.

They also like the man at the top of it, President Joe Biden. He gets an 84 percent job approval rating from the elite -- roughly twice as high as it is for the general public.

The same goes for schoolteachers and education chiefs. Two thirds of the elite say teachers should decide what kids learn at school. Regular voters are more in favor of parents deciding what happens at school, perhaps reflecting concerns about the politicized race, gender, and sexuality lessons in class.

The full survey, "Them vs. U.S.," is here.

I bet you didn't see this coming: the elites, who occupy all the seats in the media, in law, and in lobbying firms, have a good opinion of the people who make up the media, the legal profession, and the lobbying sector.

Favorable Opinion of the Members of the Talking Professions

At most, half of Americans have a favorable opinion of lawyers, lobbyists, union leaders, or journalists. However, almost 80% of the elites hold a favorable opinion of this group of professionals, and nearly 90% of the elite college attendees do. As for members of Congress, 28% have a favorable opinion versus 67% of Elites.

elitelovestheelite.jpg

Here's the executive summary:

"Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me. They possess and enjoy early, and it does something to them, makes them soft where we are hard, and cynical where we are trustful, in a way that, unless you were born rich, it is very difficult to understand. They think, deep in their hearts, that they are better than we are because we had to discover the compensations and refuges of life for ourselves. Even when they enter deep into our world or sink below us, they still think that they are better than we are. They are different."

- F. Scott Fitzgerald

The people who run America, or at least think they do, live in a bubble of their own construction. They've isolated themselves from everyday America's realities to such a degree their views about what is and what should be happening in this country differ widely from the average American's.

An analysis of their thinking, conducted for the Committee to Unleash Prosperity, finds that on a variety of economic, social, and political issues, there exists a wide gap between how the top 1% -- the Elites -- think things should be and how the rest of America looks at them.

Elite thinking, as it's termed, is under attack -- and rightly so -- for being out of step with the rest of the country.

Below, we highlight some of the profound attitudinal differences between elites and average Americans:

• In a time when most Americans have suffered a loss of real take-home pay, 74% of elites say they are financially better off today than in the past versus 20% of all Americans.

• Nearly six in ten say there is too much individual freedom in America -- double the rate of all Americans.

• More than two-thirds (67%) favor rationing of vital energy and food sources to combat the threat of climate change.

• In stark contrast to the rest of America, 70% of the Elites trust the government to "do the right thing most of the time."

• Two-thirds (67%) say teachers and other educational professionals should decide what children are taught rather than letting parents decide.

• Somewhere between half and two-thirds favor banning things like SUVs, gas stoves, air conditioning, and non-essential air travel to protect the environment.

• About six of ten elites have a favorable opinion of the so-called talking professions- lawyers, lobbyists, politicians, and journalists.

• President Joe Biden enjoys an 84% job approval rating from this group -- roughly twice as high as the general public.

...

The Elites represent 1% of the U.S. population but have an outsized voice on public policy in the United States, with their views seeming somehow to dominate the national conversation.

This may be because it is the Elites themselves who determine what that conversation will be about on campus, in the legacy media, and corporate board rooms. Not surprisingly, these people talk about politics far more than most Americans. The data show that nearly a third of them (30%) talk about politics daily or almost every day. Just 9% of the voting public do. It is worth noting that members of the Elites who talk about politics daily have views that are even further removed from the opinions of the voting public.

This is true even when the Elites self-identify as Republicans. They typically may be more conservative than Elite Democrats but they still have attitudes and opinions that are far removed from those of the typical American voter. The Elite class -- regardless of party -- is an exclusive club that sees and experiences America through a different lens than ordinary Americans.

This actually got mentioned a few years ago at the WEF and they perfectly nailed the phenomenon but utterly failed to learn from it.

At Davos a few years ago, the {unintelligible} survey showed us the good news is that the elite across the world trust each other more and more. So we can come together and design and do beautiful things together. The bad news is that in every single country they were polling, the majority of people trusted their elite less. (https://youtu.be/NIEAUgaWEfU?t=19)

And the WEF theme for 2024 is "Rebuilding Trust." No joke.

- They know that they have a mutual admiration society where they all trust and love each other.
- They know that most normal people distrust and hate them and trust has been shattered.

They concluded from this that they need to go even harder on enslaving and disempowering the rubes who aren't smart enough to trust and love their betters. The beatings shall continue until morale improves.

Another thing that comes down to generation, in the macro. Silents typically scoffed at the expansions of personal freedom.

Here in the Romney Wars ? Saw many a rock ribbed Republican bemoan that everything went to the shitter when they ended the draft. Gotta' make men of the boys, and all that.

Generationally ? Seems that Gen X desires freedom the most, then Millenials or Boomers, with Gen Z and Silents the most conformist. The fight always spins around what particular freedoms should be spared, and what freedoms are vice.

Their self loathing is easier to bear when they can hate the “middle class”. This goes back to the intellectuals of the 1930s, at least. Something something about ricky ticky people in ricky ticky houses.

Now what’s weird about all that, America had the largest middle class expansion in world history, and notably done without killing off 1/4 of the population as guys like Stalin and Mao or Hitler or Tito was wont to do.

They did it with an adherence to the rule of law, equality under the law, private property rights including the individual. They broke the mold - instead of having just two classes - insanely wealthy, and insanely poor and destitute.

So why did (and do) the leftists ridicule poor people leaving poverty behind?

To answer this is to better understand what kind of people you are dealing with. Every defective character trait is rolled up into that.

I had risen to a senior management position, only by out innovating, out performing and out-writing my degreed peers. They, with MBAs and such, me with my High School Diploma. They. Hated. My. Guts.

I've explained to atheists, who don't get it, that is true, you can beat my church attendance record as well.

Church attendance does not *specifically* require faith. You can read more of the Bible in a year than me. You can be the studio musician that plays the chart somebody else put before you.

The problem is: what happens when the input *changes*? Some will point out that the criteria *should* change--change with the times, and conditions. And some will point out that they can be the same sticklers that you can be. "See! It doesn't require faith!"

How do you sort one apart from the other? The "Elites" think that the times and conditions warrant a change in personal liberties. The are changing with a review of the different requirements of the times and conditions.

Yes, pat yourselves on the back, you can be the biggest defenders of Freedom, but you can also be the biggest footsoldiers for "Progress".

All authoritarians of every stripe are cultists. Instead of an Almighty God to be their benefactor and provide of cosmic justice, they turn to an Almighty State to fill that role.

They have convinced themselves, against the evidence of the entire history of mankind's relationship with power, that if they enable their government, their government will grant their every wish.

The squalorous, corrupt reality of government is ignored, they can only see the ideal. If the reality fails to live up to the ideal, the solution is to give it more power and money.

If sacrificing one virgin doesn't bring the rains, sacrifice ten. If doing the ritual doesn't bring back the planes, do it again, and again, and again. Surely communism will work if they just keep doing the ritual...

These people are not reasoning human beings, they are the zealots of one of the most evil gods ever to come out of the human imagination, akin to Kali, Huitzilopochtli, or that spider-god of the Moche.

Why do they want more worthless dregs that need to be controlled?
- To dilute the power of American dregs?
- To cut their lawns?
- To create the deluge which leads to collapse which gives them more power?
- Because the UN/WEF/Global power centers tell them to?
- Because Walmart/Amazon need more customers and that is good for the DOW?
- Because their views are polluted by the civil servant deep state who are really running things?

I don't know. I want closed borders and all this beautiful country for me and mine. I want to go to cities and see beauty, not third world crowds. Let the 3rd world dregs stay in the 3rd world --- I can fly there if I ever have an urge for over spiced food prepared by a guy with no hygiene.

178 Here is another thing: Freedom is closely aligned with *power*.

You don't the "freedom to fly" because you're not a bird or Superman. You have the "freedom to walk" because you have two legs and aren't in a wheelchair. You have the freedom to sit because it doesn't send spasms of pain through you to sit. You can look where you please because you have working eyes.

So, it should be no surprise that when freedom distributes power, the people that covet power over how you live your life want to see less of it in your hands.

235 To define the terms "elite" as used in this survey a bit:

The survey defined "elite" as 1) living in a densely populated urban area; 2) income of at least $150k; 3) post-grad degree.

237 Well, of course. For example, Alice Walton wants to keep everyone at Wal-Mart, Bezos shopping & watching Amazon Prime, and S*r*s - credited as a once impoverished, a self made billionaire - is power mad in the NGO gig.

But then there are the poorer (not on Forbes 400) but influential billionaires like Jay Z & Bay, Taylor and Kim. Hindustan Times: In the 2023 list, Taylor is among the top 5 most powerful women in the world, with her ranking being 5. She is joined by fellow entertainer, Beyonce at 36 and popular show host, Oprah Winfrey (who is on the Forbes 400) at 31. They're selling & the general public is buying.

To me they measured the opinion less of the genuine elite and more of the elite-aspirational, the lower rung of the professional urban managerial class. Like the poor white trash of the Jim Crow South, those on the periphery of the most favored group are often those filled with the most violent hate for the officially disfavored group, because practically speaking, there is little to distinguish from the bolderline-favored and the officially disfavored.

We need some kind of reform to destroy the two-party duopoly. The elitists have captured the establishment in both parties, and the difficulty of third-party runs makes getting around their control nearly impossible.

The best solution would just be to end "first past the post" and require a runoff between the top two in any election where the winner had less than 50%. This would eliminate a lot of the perceived risk of voting third party - if it's close, you'll get another vote.

With the "wasting your vote" factor drastically reduced, you'd very soon start to see third parties making successful runs in places where the incumbent wasn't popular with the voters, but was popular with the party machinery.

311 To me they measured the opinion less of the genuine elite and more of the elite-aspirational, the lower rung of the professional urban managerial class. Like the poor white trash of the Jim Crow South, those on the periphery of the most favored group are often those filled with the most violent hate for the officially disfavored group, because practically speaking, there is little to distinguish from the bolderline-favored and the officially disfavored.

346 We need some kind of reform to destroy the two-party duopoly.

Pick representatives by lotto.

Or alternatively make it increasingly harder for and incumbent to win. Maybe raise the amount they have to win by 2% every election. So second election they have to win 52% of the vote or they are disqualified from running again.
