Wednesday Morning Rant

mannixape2.jpg

The Fifth Floor

If you've spent time in one of America's decaying and formerly-great cities recently, you may have noticed how bifurcated they are. The great cities are in fact two cities within the same space. There is the nice city, and the awful city. They are the same city in fact, but not in spirit. They occupy the same acreage, but at different elevations.

On the surface, the cities are hellholes. Walking down the streets, you will be treated to the stench of urine and learn to dodge aggressive vagrants and various drifts of refuse both human and artificial. You will see plenty of graffiti-covered plywood and the deep filth ground layer by grimy layer into the sidewalks while wondering if your car will still be there when you get back.

Then you go inside, enter an elevator and increase your elevation.

Once you go above the fifth floor, the city changes. The elevator was a portal into a parallel universe. Gone are the filth, piss, aggressive bums, drug detritus and the various flotsam and jetsam of the surface. When you look out the window - so long as you hold your eyes level or cast them skyward - the outer world reflects your interior surroundings. These are third-world cities, devoid of a middle class. They are glittering islands of wealth and power erupting from a sea of crime, filth and poverty.

Outside of the binary cities, it is yet another world - and one about which the men of the fifth floor know far less. It is even more "other" than the urban jungles between the towers. It is utterly alien. They fly over those areas, hopping from one fifth floor directly to the next. They look at the patchwork of fields, towns and minor cities as if looking out upon the surface of the moon, an interesting and unsettling curiosity of no great importance to their plans. They - like Google executives discussed in their 2016 post-election company meeting (approx. 33:20) - see "diversity" in places just like their own. They aren't "coastal elites" because they have offices in Chicago, Austin, Ann Arbor and Boulder.

The world of the fifth floor is insular, and they think everything is like their world because they never move outside of it. The further they are from the world of the surface - in industries like tech, media, government, etc. - they more they believe their own assertions and magnificence. Why don't the rubes get it? Why do they think things are bad? Can't they look around and see that things are great and primed to get even better? Why don't they believe what we believe?

They are so isolated that they know nothing of the world outside their shining towers and carefully manicured suburban campuses. They do not work among the rubes. They do not socialize with the rubes. They do not live amongst the rubes, and so cannot figure out why their plans fail and why people don't believe them. Some are evil and know it, but most simply live in a world where it is all true and they are confused as to why others can't see what they see.

One of the more valuable things they can probably do is to simply leave the fifth floor. They need to "touch grass," as the kids say - take the elevator to the surface, get off the internet, go outside and see what it's like.

For some of them, surely. Those at the top are uniformly evil. Many, however, are just cogs in the machine with no clue whatsoever that the other world exists.

15 About that Tim Scott "engagement" . . .

1. He's not gay? I would have bet money he's gay. I would still take that bet.

2. Omg, the whole thing was so staged and cringeworthy. He's on a beach on his knees proposing, the girl has her hands in her pockets and looks bored, and some rando is standing off to the side taking a picture of it. Seems real fake. See my comment #1 above.

3. He's a serious candidate or even front-runner for VP, or at least he thinks he is. The timing of this engagement isn't a coincidence. Kamala did the same thing -- or sorta -- when she very coincidentally got a face job right before being selected as VP.

Imma say not so much. I don't see elevation as the boundary. If one were to venture into DC and not boycott it on principle because, you know, they might jail you for being a Trump voter, you would find places that are generally habitable and walkable and actually fine. And places where you just might get shot. The tall buildings over in Arlington aren't lifting you out of public poverty.

The bad places are easy to know and avoid.

I've been screaming this from the rooftops for a long time. The shithole areas of NYC are largely confined to poorer or commercial areas. The affluent decision-makers don't live there. They live on the Upper West or Upper East, or on "Millionaire's Row" or similar. Usually, as you point out, at higher elevations which even further isolate them from any dysfunction below.

Nothing will change -- nothing -- until the decision-makers have to deal with the consequences of their actions.

I just finished a book on the Franco-Prussian war, and the French Civil War in Paris that immediately followed. The initial cause was that Emperor Louis Napoleon was throwing lavish parties for the Germans, including Bismark, while the workers in Paris were starving. After Bismark took Paris and then left, the elites sort of had an idea that things could get sporty, but didn't do much to head it off. Tens of thousand of dead Parisian workers was the ultimate cost of their ignorance.

Sure, some people make it up the ladder from the middle class or even lower, but they are immediately co-opted by the "elite" b/c they want to fit in and be elite.

So, nobody in the ruling class anymore has any experience with the real world. They seem to truly believe "green energy" can become a thing just b/c the gov't wants it to. Just like they seem to truly believe that importing millions of poor illegals doesn't cost Americans anything.

There's a lot of collapse in Western Culture going on right now even though it's technically (as in tech) ascendant. It will continue if our culture doesn't fight for itself. It could well fail though no one really wants to think about that and assumes that which is will continue forever. History provides countless lessons of failure.

Girls join OnlyFans because some chick made millions there. Doesn't matter that the average is $180/month and it'll ruin their life.

People are dissatisfied with their lives because they look at other people's Instagram and think it reflects reality.

Very few people in 2024, and almost no one under the age of 40, has any connection to the real world. They live in a kaleidoscope of lies surrounded by the bubble of the algorithm.

124 Don't be fooled, trump and rethugs have no intention of winning a free and fair election. They have a plan to manipulate or steal the election.

This is why i'm tired of people saying let the election process run instead of taking Trump off the ballot. He doesn't qualify under the constitution because he has proven he cannot participate fairly in an election. This is what the ammendment is for.

if Biden was 20 or 30 points ahead (as he should be) then maybe we could overcome their shenanigans. But they only have to steal a few thousand here and there. Shut down certain polling locations. Maybe refuse to certify electors and through it to the House. putin and the Electoral College are already there to help.

That's my concern as well. We can't assume a free and fair election after everything that has happened. That's why I do not want trump on the ballot. He needs to be kept off the ballot, per our Constitution.

They stole it from Gore and Clinton was president at the time. What are we going to do if SCOTUS takes the case for Trump and vote him in like they did W? SCOTUS is much more corrupt and biased then back in 2020.

The third world is not universally poor. It has opulence beyond your imagination right next to the abject poor.

And armed guards defending it who aren't afraid to use those weapons.

The defining feature of the third world is the lack (or bare existence) of a middle class.

That's the world our "betters" want. Where they live in luxury and riches and the underclass lives in squalor like they deserve.

In short, the Fed is done with quantitative tightening, because America's downtowns are turning into derelict ghost towns, and lowering interest rates is all they can think of to protect America's banks, which currently have huge amounts of devalued property in their portfolios.

There is an enormous and dangerous game being played in Treasuries, with big players riding short-term stuff from a long position and hedging it with shorts on longer-term stuff. It's extremely profitable and is an enormous source of market liquidity.

But any kind of inversion rips their faces off and will cause the entire trade - and its liquidity - to collapse leave several major financial institutions (mostly hedge funds) in the graveyard. I think the Fed is trying to keep that plate spinning. When it blows up, it will be spectacular.

206 I grew up outside of Washington D.C during the 60's - 80's. The city had its moments. The 4th of July events on the Mall; fireworks, music, etc. was packed but mostly people just having a good time. The various memorials were accessible and at night, safe and uncrowded. The Smithsonian museums were awesome places to spend a hot summer day(s) looking at some very cool shit.

But the Feds thought it a good idea to introduce "home rule" to what had been a bureaucratically run city-state and the shit just went downhill. Crime skyrocketed, the local government became just another group of ghetto rats with suits and a penchant for corruption.

That's the (short) story of the "city."

The political establishment there is another story entirely. What they've done to D.C. they would have done to any other place they setup shop. They're the cancer.

On my last trip to India I stayed in a really nice hotel that was still pretty reasonable by US standards. 233 I grew up outside of Washington D.C during the 60's - 80's.

I was also a DC native (well, NOVA) for those years and my memory is very different. We're talking about the 70s and the Marion Barry years, when white people just didn't go into most of DC. Gentrification has been hugely beneficial for much of the city, as the criminal element was moved out (The Plan). The current government is corrupt and incompetent, but I would never trade the city as it is now for what it was then.

Joe,

You've probably put the nicest face on this that you possibly could.

While I don't think everyone of Our Betters are stone-cold evil, I do think that they are evil adjacent for this reason.

They insist on interfering with our lives and way of life. They insist on degrading and destroying our lives and culture and economy without our either asking for it, voting for it, or giving our permission.

Most of their actions are taken through ignorance(esp of science) or prejudice or hate.

The methodology is always "The Arm-Twist". As it has to be, because not a single one of their plans actually improves our lives.

Every single thing that they want will make life worse for us, our children, and our country.

Perhaps, wandering through the country outside the fifth floor with an open mind and heart would make them appreciate what they see and discover.

But, I'm pretty sure that all they would think is "how horrible! These people deserve, no, need to have their stupid, pitiful lives run by me.

Any insular group has a tendency to discount people outside the group as depersonalized others. Tribalism is so built into human culture (and perhaps genetics) that despite whatever societal changes occur, you end up with the same old story.

Only a few people in any given society are truly free of it at the macro level and a lot more are free of that tendency at the individual level by treating other people with dignity and respect who deserve it.

336 More D.C. stuff....

My first real job was working for an IT firm out of Alexandria, VA. They were on King St. Supplied leased and purchased computers, networking gear and software to a lot of FedGov in the city and surrounding area.

We had a delivery van. Drove all over D.C. Knew the city inside and out. And there were bad areas. Some of our customers were in those places, most were not. Got to see some interesting stuff. Main Treasury has cool displays of old currency, bonds and such. The congressional offices are unusually bland. Or were back then.

I guess when you live or work in a place like that you sort of get immune to the shit. Or work around it.

I wouldn't step foot in the place today.

347 I haven't dating app'd in a long time, mostly due to my wife of 9+ years..
I'd describe myself as an early adopter though.
I had good luck with it in the early 2000's, and I actually met my wife on eHarmony.
Now "good luck" really means I met attractive women to take on dates. Which is what I was wanting to do at the beginning. I joined eHarmony when my sister told me to try a different type of dating.. I did change to looking for others interested in long term deals and marriage. eHarmony at the time had a reputation for more long term relationship potential.
I used online dating because I was travelling for work about half the month and when I wasn't traveling I was working 12 hour days... it helped me cover for my workaholic-ism...

One of the almost universal human guidelines across cultures is treat others you know like you want to be treated. The key thing about the golden rule or even the biblical admonitions to be kind to neighbors is that these are applied to specific individuals you come across in life--not to vast amorphous groups so beloved of the left.

And my brother's keeper story taking charge of other people's lives is directly out of context in most modern biblical interpretations. Cain is literally denying knowledge of where his brother is because he is denying the fact that he murdered him.

Cain is the original Dindu Nuffin character in the Bible that took out his feelings of inferiority by violent action and then lied about it.

The internet has enabled a lot of this.

Your locality and where you went used to be your mate filter, and it was expected - realized or not - that you have one mate. Now, the entire population is in the "potential mate" pool and there is no enforcement or even expectation of monogamy. It's an unlimited pool and trading out or up is expected if not encouraged.

But why shouldn't they think that? They're women. They're told from birth that they're super and special and super-special and guys should be throwing themselves at them. Isn't that happens in the movies? We laugh at these girls, and we should, but it's not really their fault. They were told their lives should be dreams, and of course they believe it because they want to. Only much later in life do they realize it was a load of bullshit.

They have to for the world to be logically consistent.

Generally (and over long periods of time), women marry laterally or up. For that to be possible, men must generally marry laterally or down. Exceptions about, of course, but the general case requires symmetry.

437 When I was dating I didn’t worry that much about income. But I did care some, at least for someone I thought could be marriage material. I didn’t want six figures (although I would have happily had it). But I also didn’t want dead end minimum wage job. So the idea that men ONLY care about looks is overblown IMO.

This is how they think...

Well, women continue to become increasingly financially successful business girls bosses, while more men lower goals and work to maintain a minimalist lifestyle instead of becoming wealthy. That completely skews the "acceptable" dating pool for women, based on dating even or up.

458 David Spade has a bit he tells of a true life first date he had with a very pretty but clueless girl who moved to LA to pursue a career in Hollywood but as with most just ended up with a different mediocre career.

As the talked over dinner she was basically interviewing him about what he did , car he drives, kind of house he lived in , etc. and he made the usual funny Spade observations about he should be doing the interview and started to question whether he was really successful or not?

Actually males desiring the climb the social ladder and marry demonstrate assortative mating about as much as women do.

The only difference is those high quality males often are pursued and pursue outside opportunities for sex outside of marriage.
