11 I read a little of the 'Printer Clinic' what happened here yesterday... Oh, how I loathe HP and their ink-cartridge scam!

Anyway, I'm needing a new printer/scanner.

Any recco's? I don't need fax function or wireless capability. Color printing would be nice, but b&w only is... OK.

AI:

Reading an AI generated review of a smoke detector, as it is time for me to replace all of mine. It generally seems to do a decent job of pointing out the positives and the negatives.

I didn't ask it if it is time to begin a global thermonuclear war. But I can imagine:

"While experts generally agree that global thermonuclear war is to be avoided the fact that carbon emissions would be reduced by a drastically smaller population is one factor in its favor."

Whatever you do, do not sign up for HP's "Instant Ink". It's a scam.

The last printer I got, an HP 9025, pushed that. Whatever you do, don't let HP's "Smart Print" app take over. I installed it the old fashioned, manual way. It works fine.

When you let "Smart Print' take over, you're letting HP take over.

Depends on if you need color, and how many pages you print.

I mainly use an industrial scale one, and a smaller one, even though I maybe do 100 pages per month tops. I use them for scanning more than printing.

Posted by: Miklos has three (3) such devives at January 24, 2024 04:25 AM (S1Xkm)

If HP has its way, printing will become "subscription based". You have to pay them some monthly fee in order for your printer to work.

Ken Thompson (who I just discovered a while back, invented UTF-8 encoding over a few days, sketching out the basics on a napkin at some New Jersey Greasy Spoon diner), put a fiendishly clever back door into all UNIX systems.

He was the Daddy, and he was gonna make sure that Daddy could get into any system. He put a clever back door into the fucking C compiler. It would notice when it was compiling a "login function" in the standard UNIX code. It would put in the backdoor for Daddy automatically.

It would even notice when a compiler itself was being compiled, and ensure the backdoor was compiled into the compiler.

This backdoor was basically undetectable. It would not exist in any source code. It existed purely in the compiler binaries.

Ken Thompson is one smart fucker.

42 No more HP printers. My last one decided it just didn't like my gateway/router (provided by Cox) and just went Nah (sticks tongue out). I can still use it the old fashion way, with a USB cable, but then my options are limited because HP are asshole. So, next printer will be somebody else. I have a couple of HP laptops that are still chugging along. One has a hardware failure in progress but its still running. I think the HD may be on the way to death. It's a 6 year old laptop and it got lots of use. The one I'm using how is an 8 year old HP laptop. Still runs fine. (shrugs)

65 While Linux isn't Unix, it's pretty damned close.

(Extreme Linux distribution nerdness follows)

I use Slackware on all my non-windows systems here. There's a thing called "systemd" used by damned near all the other Linux systems out there (including Ubuntu) which violates the canonical "do one thing and do it well" Unix philosophy. Slackware finally introduced PAM in its latest release (version 15 for the -1 of you who care). I've been looking at https://artixlinux.org/download.php given that they support the S6 init system; that's due to Slackware more-or-less following the way BSD did things.

Pixy may possibly find the above interesting but only for local use and not for the day job. (TBF, I don't know that I'd find what I had written above interesting if someone else had written it.)

If you're interested in Ken Thompson's back door (well, you know what I mean), look up his "Trusting Trust" speech.

He'd done something very fiendish and clever, and his ego just had to sill the beans, and tell what he'd done done, and how smart it was. He spilled the beans when he won a Turing Award.

His point was, that no matter how "trusted" something was, you're always making assumptions that can be compromised.

Thinking about it, I assume Thompson just revealed version 1.0 of his backdoor. I assume he has version 2.0 and higher that he has not revealed.

Maybe when dies, he'll have a will that reveals all. Ego might demand that.

When I was in college (1972 or so), I used to see loads of want ads for "keypunch operator" in the paper -- $200/week. Sounded like a fortune to me at the time. They were the people who entered computer data onto those cards, right?

I fully expect him to be disappointed in me, as I think he is with most of my co-workers. (Ya know, if it's all of your staff, maybe the problem is not with the staff.)

Doesn't matter to me. I plan to be out the door at the end of March. I'll tell him once the budget is done, say in mid-March.

When I got there I found out they were still using punch cards. I use an inflation multiplier of 8X* for that period of time. So $5.00 and hour would currently be about $40.00 an hour or $80,000 a year.

I use an inflation multiplier of 8X* for that period of time. So $5.00 and hour would currently be about $40.00 an hour or $80,000 a year.

* Last time I checked, after two plus years of Biden it could be 9X.

I've found that Windows machines don't like to exist for too long and need to be put back to their factory-new or clean install states every year or two, but if that sounds too daunting it might be worth getting a vacuum and going around any vents and fans to see if it's a cooling issue. You can use that spray air, too, or an air compressor if you've got one, but most everyone has a vacuum with an attachment to make the inlet small.

Good luck.

My experience with excavating on my own property would confirm there's a lot of stuff underground. I've also excavated with nothing other then a hand shovel and wheelbarrow and I can ensure that unless someone is paying me through the nose there's no way anyone would bury a body six feet deep. Maybe two or three at the most.

The new tech which uses some sort of radar in handheld devices is pretty amazing. Held up to a wall it will indicate wiring, pipes, metal, all sorts of stuff you'd want to avoid cutting or nailing into.

First issue, the battery was going dead (which one didn't realize as the little battery icon was no longer working). Down to 1% left and I realized the USB port would no longer "do" charging (and it would have been a brick as no way to charge it when power went out). I finally went into developer tools as the USB controls wouldn't work, rather quickly and with a sense of urgency, and got it to do charge mode. Happened a couple of times since then. Down load photos? Ha ha ha ha. Get rid of some of the bloatware that doesn't exist, or so they say, see above. And on and on and on.

276 Here's another stupid question. Is there a way NOT to have some computer left wing news feed or any news feed on the computer. I don't really want to know what some guitarist thinks of Trump or the other stupid slant they have on everything.

277 "Is there a way NOT to have some computer left wing news feed or any news feed on the computer. "

There is only one way.

280 While Linux isn't Unix, it's pretty damned close.

Is this OS Unix?

I don’t know?

What is the command to list files?

The command is ‘ls’.

Then it’s Unix.

281 "Any recco's? I don't need fax function or wireless capability. Color printing would be nice, but b&w only is... OK."

I've been using a Brother HL-L2300D for the last few years. It's a monochrome laser printer, but it's relatively fast and does a nice job of double-sided printing. A toner cartridge prints several thousand pages, and third-party toner cartridges are available from Amazon for about US$10 each. Drivers are available for all platforms, including Linux. Initial cost was around $100. For a small-scale home printer, it's outstanding. I'm very pleased with it.
As for scanning, I don't do a lot of it, so I have a separate flatbed scanner, an Epson V500. I bought it principally because I had a lot of slides that I wanted to digitize. Again, drivers are available for all platforms, including Linux.

282 "Mornin yall. When I went to college for computer science, I picked a school that supposedly was one of the best in the state for the subject. When I got there I found out they were still using punch cards. That was quite a disappointment as my dad and I had already built and programmed couple of microcomputers in the 70s and even had one of the first TRS-80 Model 1s. I felt like I was going backwards. After that first year I said the heck with this and my life took an entirely different course for a few years."
I got into programming before there were CS degrees: just picked up a manual, read it, and got to work. In my experience, professors in CS departments teach their students the technology that was current when they left industry. Which means that CS courses, with very few exceptions, are obsolete from day 1, and the longer the teachers have been teaching the course, the more obsolete it is. FWIW, the two best programmers I ever worked with, one of whom was my mentor, never went to college at all, let alone studied CS. A young person nowdays has enormous resources available on-line for studying state-of-the-art CS. That, and get involved in an open-source project.

283 217 Kamala Harris says a 'pathway to citizenship' will end Biden's border crisis. I'd like to hear her explain how that will work. Or maybe not. I don't need the headache.

A pathway to eliminating private ownership would end theft, too.
