The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

More watermelon activity in the Great(?) Northwest! So the usual suspects, now led by our own federal government, has decided that it would be just marvelous to destroy four Lower Snake River dams so that a bunch of rent-seeking Indian tribes can fish for more salmon. Maybe. If the salmon population increases. Which might not happen.

But damn the torpedoes and full speed ahead! Destroy a significant chunk of clean energy generation, destroy low-cost transportation (60% of Washington wheat is barged), lose low-cost irrigation, end recreation on the reservoirs (1.7 million visitors in 2018!), all in service to a group of idiot environmental activists, Indian tribes looking for handouts, and most important, an evil cabal in D.C. and elsewhere who want to destroy our power production by any means necessary.

Chairs Rodgers and Duncan Announce Hearing on Protecting the Snake River Dams

“The Columbia River System and the Lower Snake River Dams are the beating heart of the Pacific Northwest, yet that hasn’t stopped the Biden administration from apparently colluding with special interest groups to lay the groundwork to remove them. We are deeply disturbed by the blatant disregard for the enormous hydropower, irrigation, and navigation benefits these dams provide, as well as a willingness to ignore the voices of those who depend on the dams the most. It’s past time for full transparency from the Biden administration. This hearing will provide an opportunity to expose how its plans will destroy people’s lives in Eastern Washington.”

Failure theater? Possibly, because at this point, anything the Republicans in Congress do should be suspect. But that is one hell of a stern letter, so we should all hope for the best!

Here is a sober analysis of the issue, and it pokes holes...lots of salmon-sized holes, in pretty much every argument in favor of destroying these dams (read the whole thing...it's good).

There is no replacing the Lower Snake River dams

The clean energy, efficient navigation, recreation and irrigation made possible by the dams are irreplaceable benefits.

Amid calls for breaching the four lower Snake River dams, a recent review by Gov. Jay Inslee and U.S. Sen. Patty Murray found it would cost up to $31 billion to replace the various economic benefits they provide. The report underscores the value of the dams and demonstrates why it's really not possible to replace their benefits.

Two years ago, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released a study that rejected the idea of breaching the Snake River dams as a way to improve salmon survival. The comprehensive, four-year, multimillion dollar analysis -- called the Columbia River System Operations Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) -- specifically considered and rejected dam breaching, recommending water management strategies instead to improve salmon survival.

And here is a press release from some smug, c*cksucking environmental group. You know what it says already, but if you enjoy reading arrant bullsh*t...

Important step toward removing the Lower Snake River dams, replacing their services, restoring abundant salmon, and honoring America's promises to Tribes

Ah...honoring our promises? How about starting with the oaths that our scheming politicians have taken to uphold the Constitution. Once they demonstrate that they can honor that pledge, we can move on to honoring our promises to Indian tribes, because the fate of a few hundred thousand salmon on the Snake river is pretty damned trivial in the grand scheme of things. California destroyed the Central Valley to save a bait fish...is Washington trying to compete for the title of stupidest state? Or is it simply an environmental Cloward-Piven strategy?

This is the kind of thing proposed only by the "hate people, love 'humanity'" types.

This is hateful toward people. CA drained reservoirs in a hare-brained scheme to improve delta smelt populations (it failed, but even that is beside point). They want to tear down some of the more productive dams in the NW in a hare-brained scheme to improve the salmon population. This is even worse than what CA did, because they want to not only drain the reservoirs, but to destroy them.

These people - your betters, mind you - want to do great, guaranteed and demonstrable harm to humans to pursue theoretical improvements in ... fish.

They hate people. They hate human beings. There is no other explanation. There are various subordinate explanations and motivations, but the root of it is hatred of man.

Securing a durable, lawful, science-based federal plan - Federal Columbia River Power System (FCRPS) Biological Opinion - that protects and restores Columbia-Snake salmon and steelhead. I was buying salmon at Costco a few days ago, and they had the usual farm-raised stuff, Sockeye, and steelhead. I asked the guy about steelhead, since I thought that was a trout. He assured me it's salmon.

A lot of "green energy" types hate hydro power and don't count it as "renewable."

Hydro is perfect where it can be implemented. There is no more efficient power source, the input is free (other than building the dam) and it's highly reliable. Hydro kicks ass if you can build it, and there are essentially no downsides.

The "green energy" lobby hates it as a result. It isn't a guaranteed boondoggle that destroys reliability while providing titanic amounts of graft.

Two, very old and silted up dams were removed on the much smaller Elwha River on the Olympic Peninsula several years ago. The resulting return of salmon has not materialized and the tribal fish hatchery has been denounced by so called, "Environmentalists" as contaminating the river by spawning there. If they want to breach dams, I suggests the Skagit River dams, owned by the City of Seattle, first. Also a salmon stream and much closer to the blue run hell holes than the Snake.

Change in river turbulence and temperature can also be considered a negative. The negatives are both manageable and relatively minor compared to the human and economic benefit that dams confer thanks to all of water supply stabilization, flood control and energy production.

The cost/benefit on hydro power is spectacular if you're not retarded about it like Red China (the CCP has long loved dams as big, beautiful collective projects and built way too many low-quality dams that have fucked up a lot of stuff).

Build fish-detecting autonets that identify salmon using AI and big data analytics to selectively trap the salmon. Then the autonets surface a connector so AI-enabled autonomous drones can hook on to them and deposit the nets - and their fish - upstream.

153 One of the biggest mistakes the government made was allowing Indians to remain as a distinct culture instead of integrating into American culture.

It has never made any sense at all that we ask or did until recently everyone to become Americanized when they come to America but we reward Indians for remaining foreigners in our country.

No more special lands, no more casinos. Join America or get the fuck out. That's my offer. And I'd appreciate it if you would pay the legal bills on your way out.

Schiff's father, Edward Schiff was born in Massachusetts in 1928, and his mother, Sherrill Schiff née Glovsky was born in Massachusetts in 1933. Hitler didn't take power in Germany until 1933.

From what I've read, there are plenty of people and cities, and a flood there would be catastrophic. Partly it depends on whether the whole dam went at once (unlikely) or just one segment, or even just a piece out of the dam lip.

Thankfully, though, to me if not to the morons, she didn't need to display her boobs in order to have a reasonable thought about anything.

No, the Sierra Club was started or at least cut their teeth protesting Glen Canyon dam.

The big donors to the Sierra Club forced a “policy change”.

Harris claimed she’s 5’7″ with heels.

At one point Kamala Harris actually claimed we will “lose this democracy” if we elect a president who would weaponize the Justice Department and “go after their political enemies.”

Of course, this is precisely what Joe Biden is doing.

See?

Asian Carp are great jumpers. Why? They learned it to get over all the freakin' dams China builds.

So just wait, and eventually American Salmon will learn to jump over our dams, too.

I also draw a line between 'mere' stevedore-talk and actual vain imprecation to the Creator. I can call someone all sorts of things without praying for God to damn him. Although I have not risen above it, I usually use that for inanimate objects.

He is pushing this dam removal thing and Fulcher agrees that this is absurd at the least. Maybe we should all move into this century and realize the salmon are not returning to the lower Snake river no matter what congresscritters want to do for tribes. As far as I'm concerned the tribes can have claim to every salmon they can catch year 'round. Just leave our "free" power generators alone along with our transportation corridors for the crops we raise and ship off to the pacific via the columbia river.
