55 What is the difference between shirring and ruching?
Ruching creates a rippled or folded aesthetic that equally distributes fabric throughout a garment. Shirring is when two or more rows of fabric are gathered and cinched together by an elastic thread (not to be confused with smocking, which uses a hand embroidery stitch rather than elastic to create a similar effect)

122 What is the difference between shirring and ruching?
Ruching creates a rippled or folded aesthetic that equally distributes fabric throughout a garment. Shirring is when two or more rows of fabric are gathered and cinched together by an elastic thread (not to be confused with smocking, which uses a hand embroidery stitch rather than elastic to create a similar effect)

First thought was "cholera rising." Sucks to miasma.

I had me a weed garden, for two seasons. Demo crew left a couple of scars in back-40 clayey ground which is native here, and they held water. It was the damnedest thing: just by mowing up to the edge and not poisoning the wet part, I almost immediately accumulated 10 or 12 species of showy wild growth. Cattails, reeds, skunk cabbage, some broadleafs and wild flowers, all "native" by a modern and not-too-uppity cataloguing. It's gone now, but it sure looked deliberate. I did not want to play footsie with the "noxious weed" inspector.

Right. Frog speak.

But it means, "reply, please" There. Simple. So reply to the person who sent it. Not hard.

The series of emails had gone unanswered by Willis' office, and Sadow's email was directed to Executive District Attorney Daysha Young, who is black.

Young was affronted and responded by telling Sadow that she and her coworkers were not being respected because of their sex and the color of their skin. Young said that she and Willis were both aware that people would find it "difficult" to treat African American women disrespectfully. She accused Sadow of being condescending and haughty and acting unprofessionally.

395 >Richard Hananian is advocating to abort Down's syndrome fetuses for the health of the nation.

I think Iceland does this
Posted by: Don Black

Iceland came under scrutiny after a 2017 CBS report on the subject of Down's syndrome being "eradicated" from the nation.

all expectant mothers must be informed about availability of screening tests, which reveal the likelihood of a child being born with Down syndrome. Around 80 to 85 percent of pregnant women choose to take the prenatal screening test...

...Other countries aren't lagging too far behind in Down syndrome termination rates. According to the most recent data available, the United States has an estimated termination rate for Down syndrome of 67 percent (1995-2011); in France it's 77 percent (2015); and Denmark, 98 percent (2015). With a population of around 330,000, Iceland has on average just one or two children born with Down syndrome per year, sometimes after their parents received inaccurate test results.

So, it's not fully "eradicated", and it isn't a (stated) goal of the Icelandic government...but it's de facto basically achieved.

Literally, it means, "Queuing enhances discretion," which is not helpful. More generically, it expands that premise - that people who must wait (often publicly) will tend to be better-behaved and discreet than those who do not. Akin to "in vino veritas" or "truth is found at the bottom of the glass."

E-Mail in this case was racist because someone in a public queue asking such questions in a public forum would not have been as abrasive as the man who wrote the E-Mail. E-Mail encouraged his racism.

296 The Academy is FINALLY realizing that more than a decade of awarding tiny movies no one sees (with a couple of exceptions) has been a mistake.

They are going to have to follow popular taste for a while if they want to regain the ability to lead it. That's got to be embarrassing.

I wouldn't be surprised if it beat the record of 11 wins (it has 13 nominations).

I've seen several reports recently mocking young activist Leftists, because corporations and the economy are doing so poorly, they can't afford to focus on Lefty priorities, and instead will have to focus on streamlining and profits. That...doesn't leave a lot of room for young Lefty activists to get hired or "make a difference".

Maybe the Oscar's pivot is a reflection of this trend.

Oh, there's a wrinkle to this.

Ava DuVernay, the racialist activist who occasionally makes movies, had a movie called Origins that she was trying to ignite into some kind of grassroots effort to get nominations. Shut out. Completely.

She has spent the last few weeks calling the Academy racist for not supporting it enough.

The other black picture, the musical remake of The Color Purple, came out with only 2 nominations (Actress and Costume Design). So, along with Jeffrey Wright's nomination for Best Actor, they can't do the "Oscars so White" thing, but they will.

387 re: Down syndrome, this incident made me wonder how some people make it through med school and 3 years of pediatric residency.

A local Pediatrician once referred a baby ~2-3 months old to me for evaluation of a heart murmur. I walked into the exam room and immediately noted the obvious classical facial features of Down syndrome. As I interviewed the mother I asked her what other evaluation the Pediatrician had planned regarding the baby's Down syndrome. She replied, "What? Doctor L. never said anything about Down syndrome!" Later, when I called the referring doctor and told her the findings she was as shocked as the mom.

This is basic, basic stuff in Pediatrics, but apparently that doc was absent that day in med school.

They aren't accurately measured. There are sensor networks (buoys), but not anything like enough of them and not at enough depths, and they're too unreliable. The data set has a ton of holes and it isn't accurate enough even without them. It's all massively extrapolated with a huge margin of error, then presented as if it is high-precision and highly accurate. It isn't.

High-water marks on things like bridges, etc. also work - but the high-water mark is usually visible rather than underwater, which isn't a great thing for the OMG SEA LEVELS crowd.

WHO head, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, declares war on meat and traditional agriculture, in the name of fighting "climate change":

"Our food systems are harming the health of people and planet. Food systems contribute to over 30% of greenhouse gas emissions, and account for almost one third of the global burden of disease."

"Transforming food systems is therefore essential, by shifting towards healthier, diversified and more plant based diets."

Anyone remember electing this clown to dictate what kind of agriculture and diets are permissable? Nope, me neither.
