I wonder what the threshold is in the brain that causes one painting to look photorealistic and another -- no matter how detailed and well rendered -- to look flat and more like an illustration for a children's book. Is it the rendering itself? Is it the way our minds perceive only certain things in focus at a time as we scan? Is it how we stitch together color and detail to understand a scene?

Years ago I worked in a hosiery mill - one that made sport specific socks. New employees, regardless of what your job was - accounting, IT, or production - all went through a week long orientation program. We all had to learn about the yarns that went into socks, and even handknit a sock. They were one of the few companies that stitched the heel (called a Y gore) as opposed to stretching/ironing the form of a heel into the sock.

Posted by: Don Black Yes. Turn the sock inside out and pull it over a darning egg or mushroom. I have six older brothers. Mom used to buy the large economy sized bags of socks. She assigned each of us boys a different color of thread and would then mark all the socks with several turns of thread of the designated color at the top edge. Made folding and sorting clothes on laundry day much easier. I seem to recall I was orange, but it was long ago.

There's beautiful colors on the floor and in the window. But the wall is drab and dull.
Weird. Posted by: dantesed - You can scrub the floor. -------- Sorry, I did that wrong. "The artists use of the deep ambers and blues on the floor indicate the brevity of life and the quick passage of time, trod underfoot, while the viewer notices that the objects at eye-level have become faded and neglected. The use of green here is indicative of the color yellow, which artists recognize as meaning they like blue." Posted by: M. It's never occurred to me to wash alum. foil or plastic zip bags. The foil would be hard to hold, and then where would I put it once it's clean and dry? If I folded it, it might well tear when I opened it up again. As for the little bags, I usually put dry things in them like crackers; and they would also be hard to clean. I suppose you could turn them inside out. But a box of, say, 80 at the Dollar Tree is $1.25, so that's only 1.5 cents each.

Yeah, my rule of thumb: should they be washed before re-use? Then toss them. But theres no need to throw out a plastic bag that was being used to keep bread fresh. Just pop it back in the breadbox and use it for the next bread, rolls, cookies, whatever, dry baked good. Ditto with using ziplocks in the freezer. Is it just water? Then inside out and dry. Would I be more comfortable washing it before re-using it for something else that needs to be frozen? Toss it. Posted by: Stephen Price Blair at January 26, 2024 10:11 AM (EXyHK) 191

Oh, and I should laud the TV miniseries versions of The Stand and The Shining. The first could not have been done correctly as a two-hour film anyway, and its casting was great. The other, also aired as a two-parter, had solid casting and restored the feeling of tragedy to the Torrance family as the evil hotel preyed on Jack's mind and his alcoholism. We did not get that with Nicholson's hairless werewolf and Duvall's pop-eyed Wendy.

Biggest thing my dad did?
He screwed baby jar lids to a strip of wood and then screwed that to the bottom of a shelf over his workbench. Screws and nails and small parts went into baby food jars and then he'd twist the jar into the lid. Kept small parts off the workbench and easily seen thru the glass jar. Posted by: rickb223 at January 26, 2024 10:29 AM (GIBR7) The dude who owned my first house did that. The underside of the shelves over the bench in the basement were all baby food jars. My grandfather made some rig from a 4X4 that rotated so you had 4 rows of jars. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at January 26, 2024 10:28 AM (mwCIn) Dr. Drew was talking with Russell Brand yesterday, and he talked about how, as a young intern, he was all in on the AIDS scare. How he believed Fauci was doing the Lord's work, warning everyone about how they were going to die if they had unprotected sex. Then he learned how discriminating HIV appeared to be, that it was NOT infecting everyone. Just certain groups of people. So when he sees this crap now, mostly he was talking about the Covids, but climate change nonsense too, it pisses him off royally, and hopefully there will be many more people who OUGHT to know better who stop that bullshit. Before you say that, you should watch the best screenplay for any of his works, Maximum Overdrive. /sarc. I was just talking to a friend about whether trump will avoid debating, likes he's done against the other maga republicans. We're wondering how he's going to try to weasel out of debating Joe Biden? They get out and run across the street and in to the neighborhood. There, waiting vans scooped them up. Very well coordinated. A bone of contention with the writer of the piece - has says that they were women, children along with men. No. It was all military aged men. They were also traveling with cans of gas which spilled into the ocean and they scooped up what they could to bring with them and also left their trash.

Should govt have a role in regulating anything?
Not any more. At one time we elected well read, literate, critical thinking legislators; today we have a congress of idiots making regulatory decisions that affect life or death. (drugs, medicines, emissions, our appliances) They have no factual or analytical knowledge. No, govt. has abdicated its role representing American citizens.
Posted by: rickb223 at January 26, 2024 10:29 AM (GIBR7) My dad did the same. Many of the dads in the neighborhood used the same technique. Of course, they all went through the depression and WW2.
