It's very earthy. Simple subject. Dank colors. Even the green is kinda drab. The overcast sky really adds to the brown-ness of the palette.

Oh, not French.
Mauve was a leading member of the Hague school, the Dutch counterpart to the Barbizon school of painters in France. He painted everyday subjects drawn from his local landscape in southwest Holland. This work depicts one of Mauve’s favorite and most popular subjects, a shepherd and his flock. Prices varied depending on whether the picture featured "sheep coming," or, as here, the slightly less expensive "sheep going." Vincent van Gogh, who was the cousin of Mauve’s wife, studied with Mauve in the winter of 1881–82, and admired him as "a great interpreter of the fine gray Dutch countryside." -- The Posted by: andycanuck (2yu8s) at January 22, 2024 09:46 AM (2yu8s) Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at January 22, 2024 09:46 AM (yXg8+) 81

I really like this painting for the peaceful scene and the muted, subtle colors. The colors remind me of Andrew Wyeth. The soft, overcast sky gives the feel of the day's end and the herder's posture accentuates that.
I would like to see this up close. When embiggened, the brush strokes are revealed. They are almost coarse compared to the final appearance and the underlying layers of color can be seen. It's an interesting technique. Posted by: JTB at January 22, 2024 09:48 AM (zudum) 89

Nice composition on this one. The balance is very pleasing. The raised path that runs down the middle; the flock of sheep in orderly procession contrasts the flock of crows in chaotic flight; the lazy, temperate pace of the farmer; the dog at the ready; and then the one, lone black sheep among the herd.

Silence of the Lambs
Posted by: rhennigantx at January 22, 2024 *** The moment in Thomas Harris's novel that sings for me is about halfway through. Clarice has been told about the clue she is following, the death's head moth, that it drinks the tears of large land animals to get a lot of its moisture. As she falls asleep that night, she thinks, Out of this whole world, this world that's dark now, I have to hunt a thing that lives on tears. (Subtext: Harris means Buffalo Bill/Jame Gumb, the serial killer.) Great great stuff. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 22, 2024 09:56 AM (J2vNu) 123

Reuters: Ford cuts F-150 Lightning production as EV demand softens.
I still maintain that a PHEV is the best path forward with trucks. My hybrid Ford Maverick should arrive by July, because they're still badly backordered due to overwhelming demand. Now maybe, but 2035 is coming up fast. Only EV's will be sold in California in 2035 and 8 or 9 other states. Automobile manufacturers need to double down on making vehicles with better battery life that can 1) perform in cold weather, and 2) charge faster. GE built the first commercially successful diesel electric locomotive in 1925. If an electric motor can effectively and fuel efficiently pull trains for nearly 100 years, then it seems that small EV can work as well. I suspect the problem is CVTs--Continuously Variable Transmissions. They don't have a great track record in EVs or ICEs. the transition would have been a lot smoother and faster if we were all driving hybrids 10 yr ago. The first Prius came out over 20 yr ago! A lost opportunity the government should have promoted more under the Obama administration. "Let's see how Ron does on the big stage". Matt Gaetz said it but I forgot the context. He knew Desantis probably wasn’t ready. He should be forced to carry his failed bid to term. Now he'll be free to terrorize Floridians 24/7. And it's Nikki Haley for the win...for the vice presidential candidate slot, that is. NBC News theory: one of the main problems DeSantis’ campaign encountered was the loss of billionaire donors over his feud with the Disney. What a dummy. You can't win fighting Mickey Mouse. Disney is America to millions. He's now endorsing a man who mocked, defamed, and humiliated him? Who does that remind me of? Ted Cruz? Lindsey Graham? Oh wait, that reminds me of a whole long list of Republican politicians! Tbh, one of the most disturbing things about Trump is the way he can get people he's treated like dirt to grovel to him. This is something I have always wondered: do they think of electric cars like they are dry cell batteries that come from the store with a charge already on them? So they never really grok that the power has to come from somewhere? There seems to be some sort of profound disconnect when they talk about EVs.
The Davos types believe they can Thanos-kill 6.5 billion people and have the same supply chains, the same JIT infrastructure, and the same luxury products available to them (and only to them). I don't know how any of that is supposed to work. I read a congratulatory article recently about how California is destroying their last two major dams and agitating to nuke the Hoover Dam next, which would make much of Cali uninhabitable.
