Daily Tech News 13 January 2023

Top Story

  • Well, that was probably the lamest CES ever.

The one bright spot was - oddly - Nvidia's "Super" series of video cards.

The 4070 Super is 20% faster than the 4070 at the same price. The 4080 Super is not even 5% faster than the 4080, but is $200 cheaper.

And the 4070 Ti Super is 90% of a 4080, but $400 cheaper. True that it's no longer competing against the 4080, but the 4080 Super, so it's only $200 cheaper, but it's still a top-of-the-line gaming card (excluding the 4090 as a semi-professional card) at an only mostly insane price.

  • Still trying to get a Calliope Mori limited edition case from Hyte, and the Amelia Watson case is supposed to launch this month, and they look to be launching three Nijisanji-branded cases as well.

I'd particularly like to get the Calli and Ame cases because there are matching custom keyboards available, and there's no Pomu in the Nijisanji lineup so I'm less worried about those. But Hyte seems determined to save me money.

Tech News

  • Space X has revealed why the second Starship test flight blew up: Too much fuel. (WCCFTech)

They loaded extra fuel to simulate the mass of a payload, and were in the process of venting liquid oxygen when the fire and resulting explosion happened.

So the take-away here is don't do that.

  • The FiiO CP13 is a portable cassette player that charges over USB-C. (Liliputing)

It costs $165, which is not cheap but is also not remotely in the crazy audiophile price range, making it doubly odd.

This is one of the standout products of CES. That's how lame it was.

  • Do 480Hz monitors actually make any perceptible difference at all? The answer may surprise you. It's yes. The answer is yes. (The Verge)

The difference is small, but it is perceptible to normal humans. I'd rather see reasonably-priced 5K monitors - again, the difference is small but perceptible - but at least they aren't chasing stuff that makes no difference at all.

  • Just thinking about those Neuro-sama videos I posted the other day.

Sure, she's kind of dumb - "The architecture and landscape suggest Scandinavia, probably Sweden" when looking at a palm tree - but let's consider what she can do, albeit not consistently:

    - Respond to verbal instructions
    - Talk
    - Read
    - Remember things
    - Identify foreign languages including non-Latin alphabets
    - Analyse images
    - Use Google

She correctly identified Portugal from a road sign when I was guessing Spain, and northern Italy the same way when I was guessing Switzerland.

    If she were a five-year-old she'd be a prodigy, though clearly still a five-year-old.

What Vedal is doing here is more interesting than the combined efforts of OpenAI and Amazon and Google.

Disclaimer: Also, she's funny, which OpenAI and Amazon and Google definitely are not.

6 Morning all!

Still hurting from removing snow yesterday.

About 10 inches of wet snow that the snowblower wasn't happy with, but did remove from the driveway.
Now, to get rid of the snow that came down all afternoon and evening, and I'll be ready for the cooolllddd spell that's showing up later today.

13 I have quite a few cassettes and a couple of cassette players. They still work. Some of the tapes are over 30+ years old and still play. That surprised me. Not sure I want to drop $165 for one.

14 Snow came down *fast* yesterday. It was around 40 when the storm hit, and temp dropped rapidly... so there's a thick layer of ice under 5-6 inches of powered snow.

I shoveled and scraped for 2 hours today (Friday) and it was too cold to bother with salt, so threw clay kitty litter just for traction.

Dug out & swept off the car, scraped windows and started it up, ran for a while, just to get the ice off. No faith in local street clean-up, so didn't go anywhere...

Yeah, Lexington can be very hit or miss. On the drive in this morning did not see any trucks. On the other hand, it also was not slick yet. The wind is blowing hard enough that stuff is only accumulating in the cracks and on surfaces just yet.

Indirectly, he is. He puts a lot of work into fine-tuning her AI engine.

One of the videos came right after he increased her memory capacity (a fiddly thing with AIs), and she started remembering what she had said hours or days before - mostly insults - and kept referring to him as a mosquito.

He told her to stop doing that, and she called him "Captain Bloodsucker" instead.

I've got the pellet feed up to '2 notches above normal' right now, and a tall fan on 'low' to blow warm air out of pellet stove's room & into main living area. Space heaters are in bathrooms (at opposite ends of house), so we don't freeze our a$$es onto the toilet seats LOL.

Kitchen/dining room are far from pellet stove and space heaters, so oven's "self-clean mode" is great for heating that area-- I do it every winter, when temps are lowest.

It's the best! Most efficient way to heat a home (IMO)

Current house doesn't even have a 'furnace' or ductwork of any kind... there *were* electric baseboard heaters, but they've been removed. So-- pellet stove, upgraded from woodstove, is primary heat source.

Right now, Jews are the designated 'thing'. Does not matter if these individuals support Israel or not- they are Jewish and therefore it is ok to hate them. Because 'Jewish' is the current designated hate object. Because the left was none too interested in separating 'Israel' from Judaism at large. Or, maybe their foot soldiers made the call for them.

I doubt you would in the same way. There is a difference between reasoned dislike and mob dislike. Functionally, reasoned is FAR worse in the long run and often follows the mob dislike. I would say most of the eugenics shit of the early 20th followed as people tried to justify tribal dislikes and came up with pseudo science in order to 'reason' the path they had already decided to walk. However, once they had reasoned their way to that point, it became trivial to actually plan to do something systemically about it.

Hence, abortion, Holodomor, Holocaust, Killing Fields, Cultural Revolution, etc etc etc.

84 Huh. Historically, I would say that tribalism and the ability to 'switch off' empathy for a rival group is actually a survival mechanism. If you are worried about the situation and basic humanity of your enemy, you will tend not to pursue 'war to the knife' quite as hard.

Something has always struck me as ... different about Christianity. Often religions merely reinforce human nature. It justifies and supports the instincts of it's adherents. Islam is certainly that way. In these types of schemes, might makes right. The 'Good' are good because they always win and the 'Bad' are shown to be Bad because they did NOT win.

Or you have the nihilist or fatalistic cults and philosophies such as Epicureanism or Stoicism.

Both Judaism and Christianity though, place a code of conduct and ideal that is contrary and more importantly objective- no matter the situation- that an adherent should follow in order to walk that path. That adherents so often fall short and have fallen short does not matter, when judged by the rules of those religions, no matter how successful they were, they still failed- even if it was 'necessary.'

I say the former as a lot of the cars aren't meeting reserve and some with no reserve are going bargain basement.

That notice to pay $422 for default of some kind, they told me, was "month-to-month charges." The lease automatically goes to MtM when it expires if you don't sign a new one. I hadn't signed a new one since May of 2021 because they'd never given me notice to do so. Anyway, they tell me -- and have promised to sign and date a note to that effect -- that the charges go away when I sign the new lease. This was simply an arm-twisting technique to get me to come in.

If they fix the leak and bathroom ceiling, that'll be a relief.

The complex still hasn't been sold, and there is still the possibility that the city may take it over, condemn it, and tear it down. But if our tenants' rights group can delay this for a few months, I can get out before that.

It was 50 degrees F when I woke up. It doesn't look as if we'll hit that high a temperature the rest of the month of January. After Sunday night it gets brutal.

I have three huge trees and numerous branches to clean up after Tuesday nights storm. Power out 13 hours, which is pretty short for my location. Fired up my 2k battery in den room and life went on pretty normally. Breakfast over camp stove. Brought toaster and coffee maker in and had a normal breakfast. 10,000 btu kerosene heater for warmth.

Dog goes out for 12 seconds for a power pee. Won't stay out to poop. Had to put on the dreaded doggy boots, like wrestling a wolverine to fit them on. Takes her 5 minutes to figure out that her paws are no longer freezing and finally poops after another 5 minutes. Had to carry her in and outside. The Canucks need to take back their arctic blast so I don't have to do this much longer.

269 Looking at our forecast I don't think it will get above 30F for the next 7 days. Some single digits in the early mornings, and teens during the day.

The cold by itself isn't so bad here. It's the wind. Our modular home isn't well insulated and the wind's really noticeable inside (drafty).

It appears this will be the case for another 2-3 days.

_____________

Yet, for some reason, the powers that be are pushing for the public to take in illegals and house them. Some say they'll pay you (some amount, to be negotiated later).

But, there's plenty of vacant office/retail space. Especially in downtown San Francisco, NYC, Chicago, etc.

I'd like to see the cost analysis on that. But I figure the real reason is something entirely different.

291 Fen,

About a year ago, a Baltimore school student was interviewed on local TV lamenting bout how none of her teachers 'looked like me'.
And this young student felt that she could not properly learn from someone who didn't 'look like me'.

Apparently I was the only one who felt that there was slight whiff of racism in the belief that our teachers must 'look like me', as everyone else harolded it as teaching moment concerning how too many school teachers in mostly black communities were Persons of Pallor.
