Wednesday Morning Rant

mannixape2.jpg

Calais Jungle

Yesterday, Ace posted an article on the NYC camps for illegal aliens. Two excerpts from the quoted New York Post articles stood out to me for their similarity to other experiences in other countries that were flooded with invading colonists:

"For the past month or so, we will come here, and there'll be one or two tents set up, and we'll ask them to take them down," a city Parks Department enforcement officer told The Post at the site on Sunday.

"But every day when we come back, there's more."

Migrants camping outside the increasingly lawless Randall's Island tent city were spotted selling everything from burgers to blunts on Monday -- as Mayor Eric Adams said the city would be reviewing shelter security following a fatal weekend stabbing.
A persistent camp of illegal aliens with its own informal procedures and businesses, operating in violation of the law and resisting all attempts to put it down. This sounds familiar. This sounds like Calais.

North of Calais, France was a camp referred to as the "Calais Jungle," likely deriving from a Pashto word meaning "forest." It was established because of its proximity to trans-Channel shipping and rail. Colonists from North Africa, Central Asia and the Middle East landed at Calais and entered the Jungle. Those descending on Calais, like those descending on the United States, largely consisted of economic migrants. There were relatively few permanent residents in the camp complex. It was for transients, and most of the occupants were there temporarily as they worked to make their way across the Channel and into Britain. The Jungle long predated the influx of "refugees" that descended on Europe in the wakes of various disasters across the regions, but it quickly became overwhelmed and persistently unmanageable.

It became the topic of countless news stories in Europe and Britain (and still is), and was visited by many foreign journalists like Rebel Media's Lauren Southern. Coverage of the Jungle was never lacking.

The French government consistently tried to quash the Jungle, but it kept returning. A mixture of tents and semi-permanent structures, it grew into thousands of people. As it grew, the squalor of the camp spread. The situation was untenable. The French tried to police the camp with continuous patrol by riot police, but it was largely unable to maintain order. Eventually, the French authorities began to forcibly dismantle the camp in stages and ensure that it stayed disassembled.

First, the French erected temporary shipping container "housing" in the north of the Jungle, then swept the south, destroying the camp with bulldozers. Finally, it evacuated the northern area and dismantled the rest of the Jungle. All the while, various parties - journalists, NGOs, etc. - decried the French action against the Jungle as a human rights abuse. Even progressive establishment food critics got in on extolling the virtues of the Jungle:

The surprise, the great surprise, is the chicken livers. They are perfect. Soft, with that mysterious, renal flavour that is medicinal and industrial, but also like earth and grass and licked copper. The sauce is pungently hot, but still a negligee, not a shroud, for the meat. This was a properly, cleverly crafted and wholly unexpected dish, made with finesse and an elan that defied the surroundings, but at the same time elevated them. Ali smiled with a rare pride.
Despite not knowing what "renal" means, he gave the Jungle dining experience four out of five stars.

Despite the constant accusations that the French were inhumane monsters capitulating to - or even directly representing - right-wing extremists, the French finally did dismantle the camp and disperse the people. Some ended up in other, smaller camps peppered throughout France and other countries. Some lingered in Calais, still trying to make a break for Britain. The problem never went away, it just got distributed under moderately better management when the Jungle was finally excised from Calais.

The Calais Jungle is gone today, and has been gone for years. Given the growth of similar complexes here in the wake of the influx from the nation's south, however, It would be foolish to disregard the experience of Calais.

This is one of the lessons of the Calais experience that we will ignore at our peril.

But the "Jungle" is a very specific place, and it is no more. It isn't any camp or any colonial horde, it was a particular place.

Meh. I'd like it be not a particular place. These places are all more like the Calais Jungle than they are different, and the consequences on the cities that host them and on the country that contain those cities will be the same.

Calais is *not* the way to handle this. Letting a camp grow into squalorous sprawl until it eventually has to be put down with militarized police and heavy equipment - and then the people aren't even deported back to where they came from, but scattered hither and yon instead - is not a recipe for success.

I don't think there's a unified plan on what to do with the incoming residents. All they're unified on is "bring 'em all in." Outside of that, it's trying to get them to blue states to increase their numbers or sending them to red states to make them suffer or just forgetting about them and knowing that they'll never go after the ones who are making it happen.

It's a cabal, not a unified force.

94 Very good rant.

I suspect we're seeing some very troubling undocumented, illegal immigration placement so that the Democrats (and RINOs) can gain traction getting an Executive Order (vs. a bill to which they'd be attached for future elections) with specific paths that would allow asylum-seekers & certain* undocumented immigrants to work legally, and for some undocumented immigrants to apply for permanent residency.

See, for ex: The Hill, "103 House Democrats join calls for Biden to open up the immigration playbook," by Rafael Bernal, 09/11/23

In part, “Allowing earlier access to work permits would decrease the pressure on states, cities, localities, and other community groups and provide asylum seekers with the opportunity to live more independent lives, find legal representation, and increase economic growth,” wrote the lawmakers."

I agree. In essence, the Court was asked whether Congress left room to allow states to enforce immigration law or whether it had effectively precluded states from doing so via the Supremacy Clause and delegated authority over immigration in Article I.

Despite examples of where Congress allowed state and local law enforcement to hold foreign citizens on detainer for deportation or access ICE databases to determine if prisoners are in the US legally, Scotus decided that Congress has preempted the entire field of immigration law from the states unless it makes a specific exception such as the leo instance I mentioned above.

Scotus essentially made a ruling on congressional intent that was not specifically spelled out that was faulty and full of ignoring past evidence of state, local, and federal leos cooperating to remove criminal illegals.

Well the problem with going with the original wording of the constitution is that at the time it was written, women and children were not considered to be citizens. That's why Article 1, section 2 specified counting free Persons, not citizens. Citizens were those who could vote.

All of that changed with the 14th Amendment, which is why we argue about the 14th whenever Citizenship is discussed.

257 House Oversight Committee explodes as Hunter Biden crashes their party...the House Oversight Committee began debate on a motion to hold Hunter Biden in contempt for failing to appear to give testimony. But that already ludicrous action became even more comical when Hunter showed up at the committee, offering to testify in public if they would only allow him.

@Acyn
Mace: You're the epitome of white privilege, coming into the oversight committee, spitting in our face, You have no balls to come up here and --

Moskowitz: We can hear from Hunter Biden right now

Mace: Are women allowed to speak?!? Hunter Biden should be arrested right here

After 30 minutes of sitting in the audience while Republicans tried to maintain the importance of only listening to Hunter behind closed doors, he left the room, leaving Republicans to try and carry on with an intrinsically hypocritical hearing that included three members on the Republican side who ignored subpoenas from the Jan. 6 committee.

More than that, it also made 'free states' into slave states. At the time of the Civil War, a federal court case was pending regarding whether a slave owner could take his slave and retain them in New York City. The earlier and hated Fugitive Slave Law of the 1850 compromise is what ended the Whig party essentially and was widely disobeyed in the North. Dred also overturned the once on free soil, always free doctrine by holding that blacks whether free or in bondage were not Citizens of the US and thus were property. It argued that not even free states could change this status.

Exactly. Even worse, it made the Slave States think they had the Constitution on their side, so they refused to compromise, and it made almost everyone in the Free States bitter and resentful about having to enforce laws they didn't approve of. ------------
I've actually read the various secession conventions and legislative floor debates (for states that did not hold conventions). It was over slavery. Ironically, the Confederate Constitution made the Confederate government in some ways stronger than the Federal one.

But, Lincoln's stupidity (or he wanted a war) in handling a number of wavering slave states like Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and perhaps even Georgia actually undermined any more peaceful settlement when Lincoln announced blockades, calling for troops and specifically troops from places like Virginia up to fight the original Deep South seven states.

States that did not have a large proportion of slaves in their economy were more hesitant about joining the south until Lincoln made his orders. The original seven states simply did not have the ability to resist much and some statements from their secession conventions argued that the North would never fight.

Dunno about that book as I have never read it.
There were legitimate beefs that Southern states had with the federal government over time but one of the biggest one was over expansion of slavery to new places opened up by the LA purchase and ending the Underground Railroad funneling escaping slaves to free states in the North.

The other was over Northern financing to attempt to cause slavery rebellions in Southern States like the Nat Turner rebellion. Then there was the tariffs beef by some but ironically the antebellum South probably had its highest revenues ever for cotton during the 1850's due to expanding demand worldwide for it. Tariffs were important in the 1830's and 1840's but became less so as states began to get involved (even Southern states) in pushing railroads.

And what difference did Fort Sumter actually make other than serving as casus belli to a reluctant North. Basically no one died directly in the bombardment, the fort was strategically useless as only semi completed, and Lincoln could have specifically directed his measures at South Carolina rather than increasing the war.

Sometimes standing on principle results in more conflict (Ukraine is an example) and death and even a wider war than intended.

Yes. They were running out of supplies.

380 I found the book 1861 by Adam Goodheart enlightening, mainly as a window into all of the extensive political maneuvering that went on in 1860 and 1861 to try and avoid the war; which of course was all for naught.

381 Lincoln was proven to be totally correct in his actions IMO. He maintained the union and thus saved the world.

I merely point out the facts.

I would think that an unecessary war that claimed the lives of 650,000 Americans, and destroyed countless others, a war which affects us to this day, merits some objective study.

Is any war necessary?

As a historian, I approve of objective study.

But you are still an apologist for the Confederacy.

385 the war was necessary to maintain the union. it would not have happened otherwise.

386 Not bad. Pretty smile.

Way out of my league, though.

Where have I touted the Confederacy, aside from suggesting that the central issue was secession?

Label-flinging is not objective.

This is exactly what is going to happen to more places than just TX.
Soon in NY and IL, CA already has no enforcement of sanitation or power distribution in the San Joaquin Valley.

389 The only lesson from the Civil War for today’s problems should be that many people’s loyalties and willingness to commit to war were balanced on a knife edge then and are again now.

Nice try, slick. You accused Lincoln of promoting confrontation at Fort Sumter, and insist there is a “right to secession” (where?). You are an apologist for the Confedeacu, who came into being via - wait for it - secession!

You seem very upset that Lincoln didn’t simply greet the news of secessions by various states by saying “Oh. OK.” Or that he tried to preserve the cohesion of the Union, which simply put I don’t get.
