Subtraction and division are quotidian enough to get their own Englishy words in that "-(t)ion" form, but taking a logarithm isn't, and the inverses of the higher order ones no one even bothers to have a name for at all because no one has ever had to do it and if they did no one knows how to yet anyway. When I think of the innocent Gazans I think of Deborah.
Jael went out to meet Sisera and said to him, “Come, my lord, come right in. Don’t be afraid.” So he entered her tent, and she covered him with a blanket. “I’m thirsty,” he said. “Please give me some water.” She opened a skin of milk, gave him a drink, and covered him up. “Stand in the doorway of the tent,” he told her. “If someone comes by and asks you, ‘Is anyone in there?’ say ‘No.’” But Jael, Heber’s wife, picked up a tent peg and a hammer and went quietly to him while he lay fast asleep, exhausted. She drove the peg through his temple into the ground, and he died. Posted by: Braenyard at January 09, 2024 06:44 AM (zzBMk) 123

MBAs are good at bankrupting companies. Posted by: Braenyard at January 09, 2024 06:53 AM (zzBMk) Finance, I'm told, is the art of moving money from place to place until it disappears. MBAs are in the business of realigning and restructuring until the company disappears. Organic growth is a mystery to them. So they just reach for the only tools in their boxes. Improve earnings? Buy someone. Cut costs? Lay people off. Back in the day, robust R&D departments producing advances were run by actual scientists and engineers. Then the bean-counters assumed command. Now if you're not operating a machine or managing money, you're useless. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at January 09, 2024 07:02 AM (MoZTd) 140

Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at January 09, 2024 06:50 AM That's not, quite, what happened to me. The end of year timing was pretty much coincidental. When I worked for Baker, I used to say that nothing happened between Thanksgiving and New Year's. If you're trying to do anything there's always some critical person who's out of the office. According to the incident report, the siblings were in the garage where the guns were. The guns were on top of the refrigerator in the garage. The boy climbed on top of the fridge to grab his toy gun but grabbed the real one instead. They were right next to each other. The boy accidentally shot his sister in the shoulder, the report says." Uh, you think that might be why you're cold???? The only time I wear shorts is when I'm working out. T-shirts are for exercise, washing the car, or wearing under proper shirts for warmth. I got to see a beautiful sunrise on my way there, and as I was getting a paper and a coffee I met a woman looking at the headlines which unfortunately was about anti Israel nutcases blocking the road in NY. She was saying how terrible it was -all the anti semetism-and I agreed. She said that she grew up in WWII which had to make her at least in her early 80's, I think. She was very vibrant and takes a walk in the morning in the local park to center herself. Anyway, we had a nice brief chat and she gave me her info. She works with non profits bringing people together. I think that's wonderful. I've heard hundreds of versions of this statement on every conceivable topic since I was a little boy. Delusional fantasy world stuff. But it's what people like to hear, so whatevs. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at January 09, 2024 07:42 AM (0FoWg) 180
Hadrian,
It's hard. I've spent most of my career in labs doing "new" stuff and watch as it was gradually phased out and sent elsewhere. It's going to bite the US in the ass someday soon. Other counties are learning fast, just like Japan did in the 70-80s. I saw an article last year that really depressed me. Samsung is building a $15 billion mega lab in S Korea dedicated to fundamental R&D. I've resigned myself to the fact that the next big scientific thing is going to come from somewhere else. It's almost impossible to get a job in either little or big R&D these days. I'm reduced to babysitting 20 YO test stations that have seen no regular maintenance. Like the Fire Department, waiting for a production halt that costs the company money. Posted by: pawn at January 09, 2024 07:42 AM (QB+5g) 181
Good news! The New York Times is now in a fight with Taylor Swift's insane fans, so hopefully there will be heavy casualties on both sides!
The NYT started it with an editorial that the public had forced TayTay into a very public hetero relationship, when, come on, we all know she's gay, right? This is consistent with the Alphabet crowd's belief that we're all gay, but damn those Christian morals! But Swifties will permit no criticism of their God, especially when the criticism is essentially that she's a coward and a publicity hound. So, fight on, losers! Don't you have a signed copy of it from last year? Posted by: dantesed at January 09, 2024 *** No, I mean the 1040 I have to file this April covering last year's income. The form says at the top "2023." That's what I meant by "last year's taxes" -- the taxes I'll have to pay this spring on last year's income. My copy of the 1040 I filed in '23 for '22's income is stashed at home. I do expect a good-sized refund this year. My '23 income did not go up that much, but I had SS take out withholding this year -- and that amount was comfortably larger than what I had to send in last year. "Where is Lloyd Austin today?"
Rich Lowry (Yes; I know. I know) wonders the same thing in an editorial in the NYP. He considers that nobody knew about or addressed this another indictment of the Biden administration's uselessness and sneakiness: http://tinyurl.com/4rpwszjx Posted by: FenelonSpoke at January 09, 2024 07:45 AM (RSbhh) 187

The United States has a vision where they promise both parties each the world, and provide no workable solution for any of that while also demanding that no other options be explored.

by extension the 73 million of us who voted for him (and probably close to 200 million in total who, if they don't support him are against Democrat-Leftism)
200 million? I think that is wildly wishful thinking. The majority are below average intelligence and buy into everything the left is selling. The left's message is designed to appeal to the very dumb. The left's policies defy logic and common sense, which makes them seem "intelligent" and "virtuous", which appeals to the stupid and ignorant. And, the vast majority of Americans are stupid and ignorant. 1/2 have to be below average intelligence. And, average intelligence is fairly low to begin with. Add to that bad education (i.e., minds filled with leftist rot through public education or "higher" education) and ignorance and you have a stew of really, really stupid people. Security experts at CloudSEK have reportedly identified a new form of malware that exploits third-party cookies, allowing unauthorized access to Google accounts without the need for passwords.
The Independent reports the alarming security breach, first announced on a Telegram channel by a hacker in October 2023, exploits vulnerabilities in third-party cookies. Specifically, it targets Google authentication cookies, which are normally used to streamline user access without repeated logins. Posted by: SMOD at January 09, 2024 10:06 AM (RHGPo) 202

>Unity has unexpectedly fired 25% of its staff.
"Unexpectedly". I don't know what it is, but gamers (video, board, miniatures, etc) are weirdly myopic about how companies work. No one stopped playing D&D, no one actually cares whether there are female space marines, and Unity didn't lose tons of money because they p*ssed off their customers with a cash grab. They went for a cash grab because they were already in dire financial straits and the CEO thought they had a captive market. Companies price gouge if they're desperate for cash flow.
