He was a friend of Edvard Munch and was the subject of one of Munch's paintings, swiftly painted in the rented room of one of Munch's friends. Hans Jæger maintained that sexuality should be unrestricted in relationships, arguing that the traditional values of marriage and social class encroached on personal freedom and fulfillment. The novel is set in Christiania, and deals with the everyday life of two friends, "Herman Ek" and "candidate Jarmann". They live in lodgings and spend their days drinking in cafés, discussing philosophy, literature and society reforms. "Jarmann" ends his life by committing suicide, shooting himself after spending his last night with a prostitute.

The gun controls in Oregon’s Ballot Measure 114 (BM 114) were permanently blocked via a General Judgment entered January 9, 2024, by Harney County Circuit Court Judge Robert Raschio.
Raschio initially blocked the gun controls just days before they were to go into effect. Breitbart News reported Raschio issued a temporary restraining order against BM 114 on December 6, 2022, in a case filed by Gun Owners of America. BM 114 then spent months in state and federal courts and was again blocked from Raschio, via a permanent injunction, on November 21, 2023. Litigation continued but ended on January 9, 2024, when Raschio solidified the permanent injunction against BM 114, noting, “…IT IS HEREBY DECLARED that Ballot Measure 114 is facially unconstitutional in all of its applications under Oregon Constitution, Article l, section 27; and IT IS HEREBY ORDERED that Defendants and Defendants’ Agents are permanently enjoined from enforcing all provisions of Ballot Measure 14.” Posted by: SMOD at January 11, 2024 10:22 AM (RHGPo) 197

Liberal media welcomes authoritarian turn by EU-backed Tusk government. Poland’s political power struggle intensified on Tuesday as police stormed the Presidential Palace in Warsaw, arresting two former Law and Justice (PiS) ministers amid new claims of rising authoritarianism from the recently installed Donald Tusk administration. Former interior minister and deputy interior minister Mariusz Kamiński and Maciej Wąsik were snatched by police on abuse-of-power charges dating back to 2007, with both politicians decrying the arrests as politically motivated. http://tinyurl.com/ayaw8u7s Posted by: andycanuck (2yu8s) at January 11, 2024 10:46 AM (2yu8s) 261

I've never disagreed with lawrence o'donnell until tonight. He posed the question are you better off today than you were four years ago, and said everyone would have to answer yes. This is not true from my experience and I hope this is not the opinion of a Democratic Party.
His statement that it's universally true was a bit hyperbolic. Blanket statements are rarely, if ever, true. This one is no different. If he'd said that most people would answer "yes", that would probably have been closer to the mark, though I haven't seen any recent polls asking that particular question. No doubt many Republicans would answer "no" just out of spite, if nothing else. I do think we still need to do something about housing and food costs, but Biden can only sign a bill given to him from Congress. Mostly I'm concerned about losing Democracy. If Frumpy wins, we're cooked. Yes, there are some people still suffering, but are they suffering more than four years ago? I think the recessions that no one will acknowledge killed the quality at these places. Used to be great and worth every penny. Last time I went was the last time. Quality just wasn't there beyond the salad bar (which is not why anyone sane goes). They'd probably have to raise prices quite significantly to at this point to return to the good ol' days.
Posted by: Fogo de Fuck Off with That Low-Quality Meat at January 11, 2024 10:49 AM (pjs7m) ++++ I asked my brother who's a chef about this. The quality at mine didn't change, but the distribution did. Some stuff had to be asked for and they brought it around rarely (lamb chops in particular) but the price was holding and the quality was still high. I didn't understand how they did it. He told me that a lot of those places are necessarily chains, usually within a state or a nearby state cluster. They buy tremendous quantities and hold it centrally at a distribution center, so they have both extensive inventory and a hedging operation. He said that he would expect - all other things being equal - for price increases or meaningful quality cuts to begin at 18-24 months after inflation hits hard, depending on how skillfully they hedge.
