Over the break, we discovered that a second American hostage held by the terrorist group Hamas died in captivity. Which makes it murder.

A second U.S. citizen being held captive in Gaza was announced dead Thursday, and Israeli officials said she was actually murdered on Oct. 7 and Hamas has been holding her body captive ever since.
Kibbutz Nir Oz announced the death of resident Judi Weinstein Haggai, a 70-year-old New York native who was an English teacher who specialized in working with special needs children, according to Israeli and U.S. media reports.

A young woman released by Hamas has revealed that the statement she made while still in Hamas' grasp, that they were treating her well, was, get this, false.

Now that she's actually free, she can report the truth: they raped her.

Schem and her girlfriend tried to escape the music festival on 10/7 but drove straight toward a group of Hamas terrorists who shot the tires out from under her car. Then a group got out near her and shot her in the arm. She says her arm was "detached." It sounds from the description like the bone was broken and her arm just flopped. She picked it up and tried to hide in the car as Hamas continued killing anyone who seemed to be alive. Finally her car was on fire and she had a choice between burning alive and handing herself over to Hamas. She decided to live.
And immediately she was sexually assaulted, despite the fact she was covered in blood. They put her in a van and took her back to Gaza. She spent most of her captivity there with her captor and his family in a little house. For three days she had no painkillers and no medical attention. Then they took her to a hospital and operated on her arm. She was filmed for a Hamas propaganda video in which a doctor wrapped her arm but that was the last time she received any medical help. No meds or painkillers. She was barely given any food.
She says her entire time in captivity it was clear to her that her captor wanted to rape her but he couldn't do that because his wife and family were in the next room. The wife was clearly unhappy about her being there as well and showed her unhappiness by taunting her with food or talking to her husband about how her hair was fake. Her captor later confessed to her that he was unhappily married and didn't love his wife.

Unbelievable.

Even the children seemed to get in on the taunting. At one point her captor's son brought candy for his father and then showed her what was in the bag and walked away. She described it as "pure evil." Then she added, "There are no innocent civilians there...From the moment those children are born, they're brainwashed that Israel is Palestine and that they must hate Jews."

Even after being released Mia is facing a lot of challenges. She's still trying to recover use of her hand and arm but has a long way to go. And she also had some kind of epileptic seizure which doctors apparently put down to weeks of sleep deprivation, malnourishment and stress.

Propagandists including one "Jackson Hinkle" really pushed her verge-of-release statement that she was well-treated. He got millions of hits.

I don't think he's now posting her true account of her captivity.

Even the New York Times has to admit that their allies in Hamas heave "weaponized sexual violence" as a tool of terror.

A two-month investigation by The Times uncovered painful new details, establishing that the attacks against women were not isolated events but part of a broader pattern of gender-based violence on Oct. 7.
Relying on video footage, photographs, GPS data from mobile phones and interviews with more than 150 people, including witnesses, medical personnel, soldiers and rape counselors, The Times identified at least seven locations where Israeli women and girls appear to have been sexually assaulted or mutilated.
Four witnesses described in graphic detail seeing women raped and killed at two different places along Route 232, the same highway where Ms. Abdush's half-naked body was found sprawled on the road at a third location.
And The Times interviewed several soldiers and volunteer medics who together described finding more than 30 bodies of women and girls in and around the rave site and in two kibbutzim in a similar state as Ms. Abdush's -- legs spread, clothes torn off, signs of abuse in their genital areas.
Many of the accounts are difficult to bear, and the visual evidence is disturbing to see.
The Times viewed photographs of one woman's corpse that emergency responders discovered in the rubble of a besieged kibbutz with dozens of nails driven into her thighs and groin.
The Times also viewed a video, provided by the Israeli military, showing two dead Israeli soldiers at a base near Gaza who appeared to have been shot directly in their vaginas.

The medical group that she is with has been throwing off all kinds of specialty practices they used to have under their umbrella - the surgeon who was my go-to if I ever needed one decided he was too old to start all over again with a new group, so he retired. They got rid of their rheumatologist and their imaging group and a whole bunch of other groups that we used to take for granted.

It's getting scary out there....

I understand the magnitude; but the States, including Texas, simply do not have the manpower or the legal power to send this people back where they came from, the Fed Gov has to do that. For example, what would be a State response if Mexico shut down all border crossings in response? It may be fun to talk about catapulting them across the river, but the hard fact is that you cannot send people back without the agreement and cooperation of the government on the other side. And States don't have the ability to negotiate on that level.

The only possible way to approach this was to find a way to put enough political pressure on the Fed Gov so that they will finally respond. There was never any other real option.

I was prescribed several painkillers, some of them quite potent, but they were all oral. I didn't take any of them, including the Nuclear Tylenol, because I was already on a blood thinner for my cardio treatment. Gaffes happen and often politically active people jump on them figuring it will make a major difference. No different than Casey DeSantis calling for out of state supporters to go to Iowa which some derided as a call for out of state voters to crash the Iowa caucuses. Clarifications that the caucuses do not allow non Iowa residents were made by the Iowa GOP and that Casey did not mean to vote in the caucuses by the DeSantis campaign. No big deal.

Don't think voters in other Midwest states really care. Events now are going to be driving events rather than gaffes on the hustings.

War crimes are not exactly bandied about but any large concentration of troops has an element of criminals in their midst and civilian partisan resistance tends to lead to brutal reprisals as it did for Belgians in 1914 from German soldiers. You can see graves from that period that say shot by the Germans.

On the return to New Georgia, they were ordered to kill all their passengers. So on the fantail they hid behind some sheets jury-rigged gallows. And over the side went the missionaries, children, and even several Chinese maids.

But there was a happy ending to this tragic tale. A year later the destroyer caught a full spread of American torpedoes intended for a carrier. There were no survivors from the destroyer.

The Russians were in a virtually unpopulated zone of East Prussia borderlands for less than three weeks of the war before their armies were exterminated at Tannenberg and Masurian Lakes. I'm not sure what they got up to before that, and much of the population fled before them as well. After that the area was under German military rule with results I do not know.

I'm reading a recent book on the 44 Russian Offensive in the area and there is evidence that the situation at Warsaw isn't as clear cut as that. Before the uprising there had been several counterattacks by the Germans even destroying some tank divisions. The troops had been advancing hundreds of miles since June (this was now August) and were at the end of a logistic shoestring and needed refitting. The rails were down in the entire region, and the Germans had several panzer divisions ready to contest any crossing. Likely infantry was well to the rear cleaning up surrounded and dispersed German forces. Our troops ran out of steam as well in 44 and needed a long pause at the edge of France.

They weren't really given it - they filtered in before WWII and even earlier, and were often at odds with England over it, forming resistance/terror groups that a lot of latter day Israeli leaders. For a while after the war the gates were opened and more came in from Europe.

In 1948 Britain split the area into Jewish and non Jewish zones and left, and instantly all the neighboring areas invaded to wipe out the Jews. The Jews won, leaving the West Bank and Gaza as unheld areas. Further wars won led to the abandonment of these zones to Israeli rule, with international "help" screwing with the situation for decades further.

Pascal made sense and it was harder to write bad code in it than competing languages. But, my university had a truly awful Pascal compiler on its mainframe when I learned Pascal. We would spend all weekend trying to get a program to run and then on Tuesday (it was a Tues-Thurs class), the instructor would come in, scratch his head, and tell us that he couldn't get the compiled program to work either when he tried to do it.

Jerusalem was leveled in 70 AD and a new settlement build over it after the Jewish revolt. Under Hadrian in the 130s there was a second revolt which had most of the Jews evicted from the province.

However at the capture of Jerusalem in the crusades in the 1099 there was enough Jews for the Crusaders to massacre themselves, so probably there have always been some in the area.

Historical generalizations are useful, but you have to remember they are generalizations.
