Top Story

  • Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times is Amelia Watson.

Yes, again, everybody's favourite Bri'ish time-travelling detective, Amelia Watson, is already shipping from Amazon Japan when my supposed pre-order from Amazon US is scheduled for May.

Didn't save money this time because the pre-order price was particularly good, but didn't cost any more either.

  • The I in LLM stands for Intelligence. (Haxx)

In which the author makes the very good point that the output of LLMs like ChatGPT can be worse than useless, because the entire model is designed to produce output that is plausible rather true.

Which means that significant effort is required to show that the plausible output is nonsense and should not be adopted, just as is the case with university presidents.

In this case it's the creator of the utility curl, which is used basically everywhere - every Linux system, every Mac and iOS device, every Android phone and Raspberry Pi has curl on it.

And his particular problem is AI-generated bug reports, reporting bugs that simply do not exist.

9 Evening and morning, ever'body!

Cool here this morning, but rainy, so no outdoor workout. I'm having a half slice of whole-grain toast w/ peanut butter as a warmup for my breakfast. As far as coffee, I've cutting back on the caffeine for a while, and I'm now trying to find some acceptable way to sweeten it without sugar or sugar alcohols. The coconut/almond milk is blah.

I've been playing with "86Box" for the past couple of hours. It's a x86 PC *emulator*. Emulator as opposed to virtualization.

The problem is, for very old software, ie DOS 6.22 and earlier, Win 3.x and earlier, the new CPUs are just getting too fast, and other changes make a lot of the OS software just crash. Old assumptions don't hold. I realized that emulation was the way this was going to have to go, and 86Box is about the best all around, from what I decided.

Anyway, I'm creating a 86Box "machine". I'm trying to emulate a late '90s "screamer". 64GB of RAM, Pentium CPU, and gigabyte hard drives.

I'm just about ready to try to install DOS 6.22 on it. I'm having to remember all sorts of stuff I've forgotten. But I'm having a ball.

85 And here's a prayer by Tychon Of Zadonsk. (1724-1783) He was a, Eastern Orthodox gruff monk as well as a Bishop and was declared a Saint. He preferred the company of simple people rather than the Lords and Ladies of the 18th century Russian Court. He believed that prayer in which the individual soul wrestles with God should be the basis of all thought and action. LenNeal has mentioned that he is Eastern Orthodox:

Shepherds search for lost sheep, but for their own profit. Men seek their lost property, but out of self interest. Travellers visit foreign countries, but for their own benefit. Kingss offer ransom for prisoners, but out of political calculation. But why have you searched for me?. Why have you sought me out. Why have you visited this hostile earth where I live? Why have you ransomed with your blood?. I am not worthy of such effort. Indeed in my sin, I have willfully tried to escape from you, so you would not find me. I have wanted to become a god myself, deciding for myself what is good and bad according to my own whims and lusts. I have provoked and insulted you. Why do you bother with me?

It would appear unlikely that the Russian foreign influence campaign on Twitter could have had much more than a relatively minor influence on individual-level attitudes and voting behavior for four related reasons.
First, we find that exposure to posts from Russian foreign influence accounts was concentrated among a small group of users, with only 1% of users accounting for 70%.
Second, exposure to Russian foreign influence tweets was overshadowed by the amount of exposure to traditional news media.
Third, those who identified themselves as highly partisan Republicans, who were already likely favorable to Donald Trump.
Fourth, we did not detect any meaningful relationships between exposure to posts from Russian foreign influence accounts and changes in respondents’ attitudes on the issues, political polarization, or voting behavior.

When I was CFO I went to a straight percentage tax withholding for all employees. It averaged somewhere in the 8 to 15% range. If an employee was not getting a large enough refund at the end of the year they could come and ask for it to be raised. No one ever did.

Prior to that an employee would work (4) hours of overtime in a pay period, slip into a higher bracket for that check, and see no increase in pay. Sure they would eventually see some of it back the following year, but it became a disincentive to working when I needed some extra output.

Hah, 86Box, by default, emulates proper timings for the hardware of the era you're emulating. I was installing DOS 6.22 on a late '90s machine type I (tried) to create, and noticed the emulated read speed was about what you'd expect for a HD 3.5" Floppy of the era.

You can turn that off and go wide open if you want, but by default, it tries to simulate proper device timings.

Now, I've got DOS 6.22 installed. It took me 3 tries with the virtual harddisks. I had forgotten all sorts of crap about sectors per cluster, LBA translation and all that -- 86Box faithfully recreates BIOS behavior.

Now, I'm gonna install Windows 2.11/386 on this thing....

That was 1960's Kodak, before color television. I can't say I recall ever seeing it, though the song was definitely familiar. The naked little girl (back to the camera) it opens with is surprising.

It's the pitch and the nasal quality. There were so many of the radio guys who had horrific voices that sounded like nails on a blackboard. Hewitt. Medved. Hannity.

Rush's voice was very good.

The ad was produced in 1964 . We already had our RCA color set for two years (at the continued prodding of a certain 15 year old electronics geek. Heh.) The first commercial color set, the RCA CT-100 color set was introduced in 1954. By '64, color was finally taking off, with ABC finally doing colorcasts with The Flintstones. CBS lagged behind for a few more years.

I just restored that 1962 RCA CTC-11 color set last year. Still looks great.

210 I worked with a bunch of guys out of Philco in Lansdale, PA. They said they had a color television working in the mid-50’s but then spent years trying to get the cost down.
Their original TV was about $10,000 in 1960 dollars, about $100,000 today.

211 Had to get foundation work over the break, which means my office also happens to have a giant hole in the floor that needs patching. And my game rig is in parts stacked on the dining room.

For the last few weeks I've been gaming off of a 1660 TI laptop. And it's been pretty find running ESO and not Cyberpunk 2077 grade stuff.

I may even try firing up Starfield on it. Apparently people hate it now, some in curious to get back into it and see what the fuss is.
